My Spring Awakening I have never seen the play which bears my title, nor am I especially familiar with its subject matter; however, I feel it an appropriate moniker on this, March 21st, as I begin to put my thoughts together for the column you are reading. To start, I have been curious for some time as to why the dates for the first “official” days of each of our four seasons seem to fluctuate year to year when, back in school, the calendar remained fairly standard. The Summer and Winter Solstices fell on June 21st and December 21st, respectively; and the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes occurred on March 21st and September 23rd, without fail. Now, it seems most have been pushed up by an entire day, throwing my entire elementary school curriculum into question.

Upon doing a bit of research, it seems this variance is due to a combination of factors; namely, that the earth’s elliptical orbit is gradually changing year after year, causing a slight difference in when the planet reaches its 90-degree intervals around the sun, signaling the change of season. Additionally, the concept that days of Equinox result in the precisely equal separation of day and night is also not quite accurate. This, apparently, is due to atmospheric conditions which lead to “refraction,” leading us to believe we are seeing the sun slightly prior to its rise and a bit past its set.

As a means of celebrating the Pick A Reading Partner program, the Babylon Elementary School chose the theme of “Reading is Your Ticket Around the World” to recognize the world’s many cultures throughout their literary studies. The young readers earned “travel miles” throughout the month of March by reading a number of books, and by doing so

A year after the Press Club of Long Island published an unprecedented report card grading nearly 200 municipalities and agencies on their responsiveness to public records requests, some that scored poorly made improvements in how they handle Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests while others did not. The cumulative grade was a C in the project done by Timothy Bolger, editor in chief of the Long Island Press and PCLI’s Freedom of Information Committee chair.

“Suffolk County has reviewed software and is developing a FOIL request/ response process for all county departments to access and use,” said a spokesman for the county, which scored a C+. “In addition, the county implemented a search query on the home page of its website in an effort to allow for easier navigation of the site and easier access to FOIL forms.” In Nassau, which got a D+, Norma Gonsalvez, then presiding officer of the county legislature, led a review of the report card’s

Some, such as Baxter Estates, which did not have a FOIL policy last year, produced one in a sampling this winter. LI’s 97 villages got a cumulative grade of C in the report. But not all heeded the findings. The Village of Cedarhurst, which also got an F, now prominently placed FOIL rules on its website indicating that requests must be made in person at village hall - the type of prohibitive policies that make it more difficult for the public to access records and decreases government transparency. The report and the update were released for Sunshine Week, an annual national initiative highlighting the importance of access to public records.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,

local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

The Long Island Council of Churches invites one and all to its annual Ecumenical Easter Dawn worship service at Jones Beach State Park on April 1st at 6:30 a.m. The service will be led by people from many denominations and people of all faiths are welcome. The preacher will be the Rev. Thomas W. Goodhue, a retired United Methodist clergyman and Executive Director Emeritus of the Council. He also will tell a story to children (and the young at heart) from his collection “Sharing the Good News with Children,” published by Franciscan Media. Liturgical dancers from St. David’s Episcopal Church in Cambria Heights, led by Carol Callendar, will perform. Lifesaving Lesson

Security guards across all seven schools in the North Babylon School District participated in a lifesaving program hosted by NYU Winthrop Hospital. The hospital’s trauma team led the “Stop the Bleed” program, initiated by the American College of Surgeons and supported by Homeland Security, at North Babylon High School for 40 members of the district’s security staff. Collectively, they learned how to assist in a bleeding emergency until professional medical

aid arrives. One guard, who is also a registered nurse, also indicated the intention to become an instructor of the program, which would enable the district to conduct its own training in the future. “Our security guards understand the responsibility we have to protect each and every student, faculty member and employee in our schools,” said John Kilgen, director of school safety for the North Babylon School District. “The skills learned from the NYU Winthrop

team will enable our highly qualified security guards to become more effective than ever.” North Babylon’s participation in the training was an extension of its commitment to keeping its schools safe and prepared to act swiftly and accordingly in a medical emergency. The district is one of the first on Long Island to proactively provide this training for its security guards.

o former apartment dwellers or those who have never enjoyed the benefit of a dedicated laundry area, even the smallest washer and dryer space can seem like a luxury. The benefits of dedicated laundry rooms abound. However, disorganized laundry rooms can nullify such benefits. Depending on the needs and preferences of each homeowner, laundry room designs can be customized for convenience.

Employ vertical space

Simple, clean designs can be an asset in a laundry room. If budget and space permits, cabinetry built into the design will help keep items out of sight in the laundry room. Cabinets hung directly above the appliances can store detergent, bleach and fabric softener. Use cabinets elsewhere in the room as catch-alls for cleaning supplies used in various other rooms around the house.

Incorporate a sink in the design

Some older laundry room setups have a slop sink to drain discharged water from the washing machine. However, newer homes may have plumbing installed directly through the ﬂoor or walls. It is still a worthwhile idea to have a sink in the laundry room for rinsing out stains, handwashing items and having a go-to sink for messier cleanup.

Utilize a tension rod

A rod installed between two cabinets or across a narrow width of space in the

laundry room is a handy spot to hang shirts or pants to prevent wrinkling. Repurposing a ladder and suspending it from the ceiling also creates a spot to hang clothes.

Consider laundry room ﬂooring

An organized and efﬁcient laundry room setup can make washing and drying clothes easier.

It’s important to select flooring materials that will not be damaged by contact with moisture or spills. Vinyl, tile and some composite products often make good laundry room floor materials. Resilient flooring that mimics the look of hardwood may add a classy touch, and give the appearance of wood without having to worry about damage. To alleviate fatigue

while spending long moments in the laundry room, invest in a memory foam mat that can be placed underfoot.

Keep lighting in mind

Lighting can be important in the laundry room. Rely on task lighting, under-cabinet strip lighting and overhead lights as needed for efﬁciency.

Preparing garden beds for spring and beyond Begin preparing garden bed soil early for new plants.

Soil Composition

Many gardeners prefer growing a variety of plants in their gardens. Such an approach requires taking inventory of the type of soil in one’s garden and making the necessary modiﬁcations so that the types of vegetables, herbs, shrubs or ﬂowers that will be planted can grow in strongly. In fact, the most important step to developing good roots is preparing the soil. Take a sample of the soil and examine it to see what is present. If the soil is too full of clay, too sandy, too dense or too loose, that can lead to problems where plants cannot grow in strong. Work with a garden center to add the right soil amendments to make a rich soil. This may include organic compost or manure, which will also add nutrients to the soil.

Testing the pH and the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often can beneﬁt from the addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed. Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth and preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply. Preparing garden beds takes some effort initially, but can be well worth the work when plants ﬂourish throughout the growing season.

To establish hearty, durable plants, gardeners can focus on three main areas: addressing soil composition, cultivating and adding nutrients.

Share Your Voice In an effort to strengthen the district’s school-to-community partnership and keep open lines of communication, the Babylon School District recently held its third annual Legislative Advocacy Workshop and Community Summit focused on important educational matters and community safety guidelines. To begin the program, Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi gave a warm welcoming address to all in attendance, thanking them for their continued support of Babylon’s multiple initiatives geared toward enhancing the school and community as a whole.

Throughout her message, she shared an overview of the district’s recent successes, and invited attendees to share any ideas they had that would benefit the overall the community. Items discussed included the district’s prudent financial plans to fund programs that support students as well as cost saving initiatives and efficiencies planned during the proposed 2018-2019 school budget. In addition to the district representatives who were on hand, multiple elected leaders were in attendance and spoke about the collective community effort toward enhancing education. Attendees

included New York State Sen. Phil Boyle, New York State Assemblywoman Christine Pellegrino, Councilman Terence F. McSweeney and Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino, each of whom discussed how they are taking the necessary steps in maintaining a safe and educationally prosperous environment for all Babylon residents. Anniversary in the Works Supervisor Rich Schaffer along with Babylon Town Board, various town commissioners and the mayors of Amityville, Babylon and Lindenhurst Villages came together on the steps of Babylon Town Hall on March 14th to announce the formation of a committee to plan the celebration of the town’s milestone 150th anniversary approaching in March of 2022. The group then stood on the steps of Town Hall to recreate a photo taken exactly one hundred years ago by Babylon leaders in 1918. “Honoring the past and helping our residents understand the story of our town are important

responsibilities for the government,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “Whether it be on the national, state or local level, the composition of the government is reflective of its citizens. I hope that our residents enjoy what we have in store for this anniversary as much as the people in this photo will,” he added. Supervisor Schaffer says the committee will be led by a combination of volunteers from the community and Town of Babylon staff, especially Town Historian Mary Cascone and other members of the Department of Historic Services.

“For past anniversaries similar to this one, we have seen many traditional elements like parades and the publishing of literature to give residents, which are options I’m sure the committee will consider,” said Cascone. “Thanks to the widespread use of social media today, we have many unique opportunities to reach our residents and help them learn about our history,” she added.
