expectations, and the expectations of others? Self-judgement is born in the mind. Turn down the volume of the mind and turn up the volume of the heart. The gut should always run interference. Some of what I write may be pure platinum, while other entries are gold, silver or even rust, depending on who you ask. I’ve certainly gotten a few rusty emails over these months. I’ve also gotten emails of appreciation and gratitude that have touched me deeply. One thing I will always serve up is my truth. That I know I can deliver every time, without exception. Having the courage to say, “This is who I am, and this is how I feel,” is the antidote to, “How do I top that?” syndrome. The next time you’re about to give your next presentation, create your next piece of art, cook your next meal, plan your next party or draw up your next big plans, if it feels right and it feels real, and it resonates with your heart and your gut, it’s a meaningful and worthy pursuit. How it will be received by others is anyone’s guess.

Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. There are unforunatelty 2,000 homeless children right here on Long Island, but thankfully Birthday Wishes works with 80 shelters/ transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties to give more than 120 children a birthday celebration each month!

In preparation for Easter, the Walt Whitman Shops is offering an opportunity for local children to have fun and give back to charity during their annual Easter Egg Hunt. This event will take place on Sunday April 14th at 9am. Tickets are $5 per child and all proceeds will be donated to Birthday Wishes of Long Island. Over 10,000 eggs and toys will be spread out in a section of the mall for kids to find. Also, you can meet the Easter Bunny there as well!

Birthday Wishes relies heavily on donations of toys from generous donors like you to throw a birthday party, they are always looking for more of these donations. As teens are their fastest growing demographic that they serve, they are always in need of teen gifts. They are currently looking for gifts for children of the ages 14-19. They love to throw birthday parties for the children they serve, which reflects a birthday party that would be thrown for any child anywhere. Therefore, please make sure your donations are brand new only! Below is a list of gift items that they are seeking:

The Mercy Inn is an amazing soup kitchen, located at 17 South 20th Street in Wyandanch. They serve hot meals from 12-1PM Monday-Friday and they also prepare a take home bag for each of their guests, consisting of two sandwhiches, a drink and a snack. No one ever leaves their soup kitchen hungry.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL)

levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight

against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Another tip to consider during the holiday season and every day to improve health and manage weight is to reduce screen time and time spent sitting. Watching TV for more than two hours a day has been linked to overweight and obesity. Try creating a holiday-themed playlist and having a dance party. Otherwise, you may waste your time and money planting ﬂowers or vegetables only to have them zapped away by another frosty day.

Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on in the season. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments you can add to your soil in your particular area, in order to enrich your soil. Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water it, and continue to care for the entire area until the spot fills in. Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all of your tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed. Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over winter months. Use a leaf blower to blow away any leftover leaves. Check if your front porch, railings or decking need painting and/or staining. Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler

so everything will be ready for those peak spring days. Think about any annuals you might want to plant in the landscape this year that will complement your existing shrubbery or perennials. Come up with a theme so that

Creeping phlox: Also known “moss phlox,” creeping phlox is a short ground-cover that is a herbaceous perennial. Phlox produces small, fragrant flowers in dense clusters, which can attract wildlife, such as butterflies, to their mats across the soil surface. Snowdrops: Snowdrops can peek out even when there is snow still on the ground — sometimes as early as January and February. But their name is actually a reference to their appearance, as snowdrops have three white petals that hang down like drops dripping off the stem. Discussion on Important Events The Babylon School District recently held its annual Legislative Advocacy Workshop and Community Summit in an effort to strengthen the district’s school-tocommunity partnership and keep open lines of communication. To begin the program, Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi gave a warm welcoming address to all in attendance, thanking them for their continued support of Babylon’s multiple initiatives geared toward enhancing the school and

community. Throughout her message, she shared an overview of the district’s recent successes, and invited attendees to share any ideas they had that would benefit the community as a whole. Items discussed included the district’s prudent financial plans to fund programs that support students as well as cost saving initiatives and efficiencies planned during the proposed 2019-20 school budget. In addition to the district

representatives who were on hand, multiple elected leaders were in attendance and spoke about the collective community effort toward enhancing education. Attendees included Councilman Terence F. McSweeney, Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino and Babylon Village trustee Robyn Silvestri, some of whom discussed how they are taking the necessary steps in maintaining a safe and educationally prosperous environment for all Babylon residents.

Additionally, Babylon Junior-Senior High School students Isabella Gaskill and Peter Schubart both advanced to the final round of the 2019 Music Lovers Scholarship Competition which was held at the United Methodist Church in Islip on Feb. 25. According to Director of Fine Arts and Music Angela Turk, both students sounded amazing during their performances. Due to his talents, Peter secured the first-place title and received a $2,000 scholarship.

Six Steps To Help Students Get Into, And Pay For, College (NAPSI)—Getting into college can seem complicated, even overwhelming—but help is available. To support students and families, the College Board— the creator of the SAT and Advanced Placement—has launched a first-of-its-kind national scholarship program that serves as a simple college planning guide for all students. It explains what to do and when to do it. These College Board Opportunity Scholarships lay out six simple steps that all students can take to get into college. Completing each step will earn a chance for a scholarship; completing all six will earn students a chance to win $40,000 for their college education. These six steps help students plan by making a good starter college list, help them prepare so they can take their best shot and help them pay for college: 1. Build a College List—

Students get started by exploring colleges they’re interested in. 2. Practice for the SAT— Students use Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy to help them get ready for test day. 3. Improve SAT Scores— Students show how practice pays off by improving their SAT score. 4. Strengthen College Lists—Students make sure their college list is a mix of academic safety, fit and reach schools. 5. Complete the FAFSA— Students fill out the free government form to apply for financial aid. 6. Apply to Colleges— Students apply to the schools they want to attend. A Big Difference One thing that makes these scholarships different from other programs is that they’re about how much students grow, not how high they score. They don’t require an essay

or an application and don’t have a minimum GPA or SAT score requirement. Instead, the program rewards all students’ efforts and actions on their way to college. The more effort students put in and actions they complete, the more chances they have to earn a college scholarship. The College Board is investing $25 million over five years. A total of $5 million is available for each graduating class, beginning with the class of 2020. All students are invited. Just by making that list, they earn a chance for a $500 scholarship.
