In support of their mission of giving back to veterans and first responders, nonprofit Paws of War recently hosted their “Hearts and Heroes” event at their headquarters in Nesconset, where they provided 27 service animals with free veterinary care, which included wellness checks, flea and tick medications, vaccinations, bags of dog food and microchipping service. The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend. “As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals. They are more than just pets; these animals provide emotional support and tasks for these heroes when it is needed most,” said Kelli Porti, Veteran & Community Outreach Liaison for Paws of War. Dr. Marissa Altieri, DVM, volunteered her expert veterinary care to the pop-up clinic and its patients, donating her time to assist Paws of War as a way to give back to the community and support the non-profit’s mission.

Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been a fun day each April for kids and their families to spend time together and also learn about Long Island-based companies with services and products for them. There are many exciting reasons for families to attend this amazing event. Some of this year’s new additions are: • Four Video games, provided by Dave & Buster’s on “free play” all day • Soccer Demo Class, provided by Soccer Stars • Chorus Class and Piano Performance, provided by LJ Music Studios • Beanbag Toss for Prizes, provided by TherapyMyWay and Psychological Service LI • Bead Buddy Art Project, provided by Oasis Day Camp • Sewing and Fashion Design, provided by The Fashionable Stylista Additional activities and attractions include three bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painters, balloon artists, a photo booths, Boxercise non-contact exercises, speech screenings, a guinea pig to touch, Italian ice samples, child ID cards, and cotton candy, all included with admission. and this year will be no different.” The All Kids Fair will have over 70 vendors, including camps, places to play, after-school activities, birthday party providers, and college planning. This fun-filled event offers exciting educational and leisure activities to interest kids and their families each year. The Fair has opportunities for all ages, including kids who have special needs. Families can interact inperson with exhibitors in a huge space, with vendors set further apart and with the activity areas in designated open areas rather than in breakout rooms. Attendee Jonathan Morris shared “The All Kids Fair is a great resource for new parents and old parents alike showcasing many different vendors with great ideas and opportunities for all families.” Jennifer Keegan of Your Local Kids Source, a multiyear sponsor and exhibitor, previously shared that she “had a great time at the All Kids Fair meeting tons of Long Island parents and enjoying all the smiling faces

KNOCKING DOWN HUNGER - Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District held a cereal box domino challenge to “knock down hunger.” The school collected boxes of cereal to donate to the West Babylon School District food pantry. As a school, there were 370 boxes collected in total. On March 9, the boxes were set up in the hallway as dominos that were knocked down as the students watched as they fell. Some good news from the pandemic is that the public has recognized the need to support youth mental health and well-being. Educators supported their students in ways they had never imagined, schools and parents have recognized mental health is an essential part of overall health...mental health conditions are real, common and treatable. Youth experiencing mental health issues deserve support, compassion and care not stigma and shame. Research shows that the most important thing a child needs to be resilient is a stable committed relationship with a supportive adult. So what can parents do? Be a positive role model by taking care of your own mental and physical health. Show positive ways you deal with stress, refrain from unhealthy coping strategies, etc. Emotional Regulation. Practice techniques to manage emotions by ﬁrst

Talk about the risk of alcohol and drugs. Children are exposed to positive images about alcohol at a very young age. Parents need to counteract those positive messages by communicating the negative impact of alcohol and other drugs in a youth’s developing brain. Look out for warning signs of distress and seek help when needed. Signs of distress include irritability, anger, withdrawal, changes in appearance, performance at school, sleeping or eating patterns. When you notice changes let your child know your concerns and be ready to support them. Seek professional help through your pediatrician if necessary. Manage youth time and activities online. Digital technology has promote both positive and negative experiences. Assess how your child feels after spending time online, etc. YES Community Counseling Center offers a variety of programs for children, teens and parents that support healthy development and strong families.
