She lives about thirty to forty-five minutes away from me. We didn’t go to the same school, nor have any mutual friends. We met through our parents. I never knew how close I could grow to someone who lived so far. We can talk for hours. Well, when talking for hours, you run out of things to say. When I asked how school was, I knew it was the worst and best thing I could ask. She admitted she constantly felt uncomfortable in school. She was jealous of all her peers’ happiness. Her parents were fighting a lot, she was bullied, and there was also the secret. This secret was one I knew for a long time and promised to keep to this day. Let’s just say it got to her. She became depressed and cut herself. I, being the friend I am, did what

Student Spotlight Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a hero? I know I have. Wouldn’t it be cool to run into a burning building to save a little baby or catch the criminal? We all know the definition of a hero: A courageous person who helps others without thinking of him or herself or the consequences that may follow. Also, everyone under the sun knows heroes are brave, selfless, caring, etc. But, have you ever thought maybe that’s just not enough? How can something so incredibly important to society have such a short definition and description? That’s because it’s wrong. A hero is an ordinary person who can and will go out of his or her way to help, care and solve people’s problems .... basically, anyone. I bet at least one, if not every teacher you had, told you to be kind to one another, and that you never know what someone else is

I needed to do. I told. I told my mom to tell her mom to get her to a therapist. What I didn’t do is tell her secret. I never break my promises. I just told her she was getting bullied and cutting. But this, to any parent, is traumatizing. Long story short, it took three years, but I got her through it. But what does this have to do with heroes? Well, now I consider myself a hero. So does my friend. I’ll never forget the day I got the text: thanks for saving my life. Not to be selfish, but what I did took guts and time. I selflessly got my friend through, by far, the roughest time of her life. I think I am a hero. What I’m trying to say is that even the stupidest thing can keep someone from self-harm. Even the happiest of people go through depression. Please be kind to others, and be a hero by simply listening.

That Old Familiar Feeling By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. That’s what they say anyway. Hence, my newfound appreciation for the art of yoga. It forces you to breathe, to meditate, to clear your mind of all unwanted stresses. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat. It all started when, after 20 years of dancing, I decided that I needed something else to fill my time, to bring me back to that place where I felt like I was in shape, in control and in sync with my surroundings. After long days at work on deadline,
I settled into somewhat of a routine, using the classes to de-stress and unwind. Then came the winter, that vast, endless stretch of bitter cold, spurring the urge to hibernate until the first flowers decided to bloom. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t wait until spring, and so, come March, back to yoga I went. The first few weeks were a bit rough, what with the creaking bones and stiff muscles and, well, just a general laziness and lack of motivation. But, like magic, after getting back into a bit of a routine, there it was – that old familiar feeling of inner peace. For a few minutes anyway.
The key, I suppose, it to find a way to bottle that feeling and be able to call upon it when needed, to apply it to the world beyond my yoga mat. Perhaps that comes with practice. More practice than the once-aweek, sporadic schedule I have assembled for myself. One can only assume. One day at a time. One class at a time. One deep breath at a time. That’s all any of us can focus on in our infinite quest to find that deep, soul-searching sense of meaning to it all. No stress, no judgment, no pressure. Just you, alone with your thoughts. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat.

The Babylon School District Board of Education has appointed veteran educator Linda Rozzi as the district’s next superintendent of schools, effective July 1st, 2015. “It is with great pleasure that we welcome Mrs. Rozzi to the Babylon School District,” said Board of Education President Lisa McKeown. “Her reputation as a leader, both locally and nationally, is what immediately positioned her as a standout during the recruitment process. Her diligence and dedication to improving education for all students are just two of the qualities that will assist our district in continuing to prepare our students for future
success.” Mrs. Rozzi comes to the district with more than two decades of educational experience, the last 10 of which she has worked as a superintendent on Long Island. She began her career as an English teacher in the Bethpage Union Free School District before climbing the professional ladder as an administrator in William Floyd, South Country and Tuckahoe Common school districts, where she served as superintendent. More recently, she served as superintendent of schools in the East Islip School District since July 2013. “I am incredibly honored to be selected as Babylon’s next superintendent of schools,” said Mrs. Rozzi. “The district is well-regarded by its community and many on the outside and possesses an educational philosophy that is aligned with my professional beliefs. I look forward to building positive and meaningful relationships with the greater educational community as we work collaboratively to take the district to its next level of excellence.” In late fall, the Board of Education began working with the professional recruitment team at District Wise to cultivate and screen candidates for the district’s superintendency. The Board ultimately interviewed a number of finalists for the position before selecting Mrs. Rozzi. Her contract, which was approved by the Board on March 9th, will run through June 30th, 2018. During her time in East Islip, Mrs. Rozzi guided the implementation of a comprehensive district strategic plan that advanced academics, student safety, district finances and facilities. Successes included improved
graduation rates, the implementation of an elementary Princeton Plan and increased opportunities for students taking Advanced Placement courses. Additionally, she provided support to further well-established career academies at the high school level that emphasize the fields of business, medicine, the environment, hospitality and the culinary arts, all of which have received national and state acclaim. Beyond her work in East Islip, Mrs. Rozzi has spoken at the national level on literacy initiatives and reform and has worked throughout her career on various educational advocacy projects alongside state and local legislators. She has served for numerous years on the board of directors for the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association, as well as acted as a cluster leader for the SCSSA’s East End Superintendents. She has also spoken regionally on career and technical education and the new Pathways for Graduation. Mrs. Rozzi holds a Bachelor of Science in secondary education from Penn State, a Master of Arts in liberal studies from Stony Brook University, and a Master of Education in educational leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University. She also completed extensive leadership training at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is a member of the New York State Council of School Superintendents, the National Council of Teachers of English, the National School Boards Association and the New York State School Boards Association, as well as many other educational leadership associations.

sacrament. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the most unique and beautiful aspects of Catholicism – established so that we as sinners can obtain forgiveness for our sins and reconcile with God and the Church. The sacrament “washes us clean” and renews us in Christ.
Lent is a particularly fitting time for reconciliation. It is a chance to reflect on our lives and any areas we might like to change, heal and resolve with God, ourselves, our families and our community. With many years of experience in guiding second graders through preparation for their First Reconciliation, SSCM teacher, Ms. Bravo asserted that the candidates go into their first confession looking fairly trepidatious, but across the board, they come away all smiles every time! H e a r t f e l t congratulations to all of SSCM’s First Reconciliation candidates on completing this beautiful sacrament for the first time and taking another step on their road toward their First Holy Communion!

On Scout Sunday, uniformed Scouts and Scouters across the country greeted the congregation, participated in worship services, received religious awards and conducted service projects to benefit their place of worship. St. Paul’s Church has been a great supporter of Troop 399 and we were honored to celebrate with their congregation. Pastor Conrad Strauch gave a moving and touching sermon. He also presented the Parvuli Dei religious award to a deserving young man, Troop 399’s newest Boy Scout James White. Following the services, the parishioners hosted a breakfast with an array of scrumptious food. Boy Scout Troop 399 meetings are held each Thursday evening that schools are open at 7:30 p.m. in the Marion G. Vedder Elementary School cafeteria. All Hail Seuss Santapogue students celebrated author Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2nd with various activities throughout the school day. In addition to creating
the iconic red-and-white striped Seuss hats, the students read Dr. Seuss’s books and studied the language he used. After reading a number
of Dr. Seuss books, Yvonne Szpilka’s kindergarten class learned about rhyming and studied how this method was utilized.

Babylon Memorial Grade School students and families had a chance to apply their math skills in a fun and interesting way this winter when the school hosted a Math Carnival.
The event gave attendees the chance to play and enjoy math games designed to help students improve speed and accuracy in basic math facts as well as to develop strategic thinking and problem solving skills.

On Saturday, February 7th, several Boy Scouts and Leaders from North Babylon’s Troop 399 were in attendance at and guests of the North Babylon’s Cub Scout Pack 112’s annual Blue and Gold dinner. The event was held at the North Babylon Hale Road Firehouse. Throughout the evening the festivities included the Arrow of Light Ceremony, a Bridging Ceremony, a delicious dinner and entertainment provided by a deejay at this jubilant affair.
