TUNE UP SPECIAL
‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.
Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will
cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

History Comes to Life Throughout February and March, fifth-graders at each elementary school in the North Babylon School District visited the Heckscher Museum in Huntington for a viewing of an exhibit titled, “Mort
Kunstler: The New Nation.” The exhibit features vivid paintings depicting iconic scenes through the history of America, from the birth of the nation to the inauguration of President George

Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District is challenging its students to engage in different reading activities during its Pick A Reading Partner program from February 27th to March 16th. This year’s theme, “Oh, the Places We’ll Go,” is a modeled on the book by Dr. Seuss. During PARP, students are encouraged to read with their parents for at least 15 minutes a day and keep a log of their time
spent reading. Students sign a pledge to be an active reading partner during the three-week period. The event kicked off on February 27th with a Community Reader Day. With the doors throughout the school decorated in Dr. Seuss-themed books, the students spent Read Across America Day on March 2 engaged in activities around his famous books. Wearing their “Cat in the Hat” striped hats, students partnered with their buddies to conduct

March is Pick a Reading Partner month at South Bay School Elementary School in the West Babylon School District, and this year’s theme is “Read Around the World.” As part of this year’s PARP program, each K-5 class has received its own reading passport, filled with blank pages. The pages in the passport are “stamped” with colorful stars when any student in the class participates in “Passport with the Principal.” To participate, the students sign up for a time to read with Principal JoAnn Scott, who then stamps their passport. Each stamp earns extra mileage points for their whole class.
