Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May. Legislator Donnelly’s district office will serve as a drop-off location for the Ninth Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will
be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares. org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have generously donated to this annual drive. All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are
welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets. Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm, until May 31. As per health code requirements, all pet food must be unopened and in original packaging. For
more information, call (631) 854-4433. “When people fall on hard times, it impacts all members of the family including pets,” said Legislator Donnelly. “Families shouldn’t have to decide between feeding themselves and feeding their beloved pets. I am happy to partner with Long Island cares once again on this important and much needed cause.”
Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strongsmelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

New York Is Home To Historic St. Patrick’s Day Parade
St. Patrick’s Day has become a beloved celebration in which people of Irish descent and even those with no trace of Irish blood gather to celebrate. Over the years, celebrations of St. Patrick, who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Ireland, have evolved. Traditions now include wearing green clothing, toasting with a pint of Guinness, eating traditional Irish cuisine, and prominently displaying shamrocks. Attending St. Patrick’s Day parades also is part of the festivities. Even though St. Patrick was a missionary who visited Ireland many centuries ago, the origins of much of the revelry surrounding St. Patrick’s Day, are more recent. Historical documentation puts some of the earliest St. Patrick’s Day fanfare at various places in the United States, such as St. Augustine, Fl., Boston and New York City. In fact, New York is the site of the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade. According to History. com, the first parade honoring the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick was held
by Irish soldiers serving in the British army in 1762. Back then, green attire was a symbol of Irish pride but was banned in Ireland, which was still governed by the British. However, on the streets of New York, homesick soldiers stationed in the colonies had the freedom to sing Irish songs, wear green, play the pipes to familiar tunes, and speak Gaelic. The parade was a boisterous time to celebrate Irish culture. New York City became home to a large number of Irish immigrants. As the number of Irish immigrants in New York increased, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continued to evolve and
even spread, as immigrants started to call cities other than New York home. Today, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest parades in the world. The day begins with High Holy Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral at 8:30 a.m. Then the parade begins along 5th Avenue, running from 44th Street to 79th Street from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 2020 Grand Marshall is James T. Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Callahan traces his lineage to County Limerick and County Kerry, and will lead the 259th anniversary of this beloved parade.
A Saint Who’s Not A Saint
St. Patrick is a man revered in Ireland and around the world. Despite being an influential figure in the history of Ireland and Christianity, St. Patrick is a saint in name only. Millions of people around the world celebrate whom they believe to be an official saint each year on March 17. However, according to Irish Central and writer Ken Concannon, the formal canonization process in the Roman Catholic Church was not in place during its first millennium, a period of time in which Patrick
was active. The official process for canonization was not instituted until around the 12th century, long after Patrick died. St. Patrick joins two other Irish saints who were never formally canonized. The only Irish saint to be canonized is Fergal, also known as St. Virgil of Salzburg. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1233. St. Patrick became a “saint” by popular opinion. In the early years of the Church, many martyrs and those whose lives were especially holy were considered saints, even if they were not
canonized. It is probable, with the approval of a bishop, that St. Patrick was considered a saint for these reasons. The concept of St. Patrick not being an official saint adds to the mystery of the man, who was born in Britain and was said to have converted the Irish from paganism with fabled symbolism that borrowed from ancient traditions. Even if his status as saint is informal, St. Patrick certainly made his mark, with a worldrenowned celebration commemorating his achievements.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez joined with fellow local officials for Cub Scout Pack 1421’s Blue and Gold Banquet dinner, held at the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge in
Lindenhurst. The annual Blue and Gold Banquet is held to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America in February 1910 and also can serve as an Arrow of Light Ceremony, where cub scouts make the
transition to boy scouts. Supervisor Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Martinez congratulated the scouts on taking the next step in their scouting journey.
Mattresses For Music Band, chorus and orchestra students at Babylon Junior-Senior High School recently held a fundraiser that could put one to sleep. They sold mattresses in the auditorium to the
community to raise money for Babylon Schools Friends of the Arts. Thirtytwo mattresses were sold overall, raising an impressive $4,270. The money will go toward sending the students
to this spring’s “Music in the Parks” festival in Hersheypark, where they will get the unique opportunity to perform their repertoire of songs and represent their school on a national stage.
CELEBRATING SEUSS AT JOHN F. KENNEDY - First graders in Lisa DeGennaro’s class at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon School District celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America Day on March 2. The students partnered up and read various books written by Dr. Seuss. They then went on a hunt for green eggs that had words written on them. A Court of Honor ceremony was held for Jacob at North Babylon High School, where the officials congratulated him on his achievement and wished him the best in his future. For his Eagle Scout project, Jacob doubled the beehive capacity of the apiary at Homecoming Farm in Amityville to support the farm and neighboring ecosystem. The videophone is located outside the Public Safety desk on the east side of the Babylon Town Hall Annex in North Babylon ( 281 Phelps Lane), and will be open to the public 24/7. Essentially a webcam, the device allows members of the public to call emergency services, family members and others to use sign language. Councilmen Terry McSweeney and DuWayne Gregory were also in attendance. “On behalf of Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the rest of the Town Board, I am thrilled to provide another helpful tool to those with disabilities in the Town of Babylon,” said Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez. “We have made it a priority to ensure that all of our facilities are accessible and welcoming to everyone in our community, and this videophone will do a great job of advancing that,” he added. The videophone came to Babylon after Fred Greenspan of Deaf Sensitivity Training made Supervisor Rich Schaffer aware of the free device and installation. Competition in Oslo, Norway. Mr. Anikushin will perform works by Soler, Beethoven, VillaLobos, Chopin, Liszt, Ponce, Prokofiev and Lecuona. The music will begin at 3 pm. North Babylon’s Robert Moses Middle School Marching Band were proud to march in the Garden City St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 1, where they performed “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” arranged by Paul Murtha. This is a very prestigious parade and is one of the oldest parades in Long Island. This is the band’s 12th year performing in this event, where they previously won the Chancellor’s Trophy nearly eight years ago.
