By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time continues to march on, and those moments we so casually took for granted along the way become nothing more than a distant memory, relegated to the nostalgia pile, to be savored in the imagination only. The difference, though, is that these ﬂashbacks are increasingly from not so long ago, mere years, rather than decades… yet they seem a lifetime away, just out of reach. It’s the little things, too, the laughs shared, the stories told, the impromptu gatherings, the gifts exchanged, the memories made. Whether with family members, friends, co-workers, even the occasional stranger, every moment is part of something

larger, a curve in the path – your path – of life. Every decision made, or not made; each chance encounter or outlined goal – all leads to the point we are currently at, for better or worse. How amazing to be able to foresee the consequences of our actions; but then, our choices would be far simpler, wouldn’t they? Gone would be the mystery, the spontaneity, the happy accidents that tend to occur along the way when you simply close your eyes and just let life take you by the hand. There are those who believe in destiny; and there are those who refuse to think we don’t have as much input in our affairs as any otherworldly force. Which is right? Who’s to say. The only indisputable fact is that everything does

happen for a reason. People come into our lives, or go, as the case may be; and we are better for it. Every chance meeting is a lesson in disguise, to be determined at a later date. In the meantime, we go on, as does time. Our world grows smaller as circumstances change our daily dynamics, and we are forced to adjust, whether we care to or not. The memories fade, and their significance wanes in the face of more urgent, pressing matters. But we should never forget… the people, the places, the roads taken – all have led to here and now. And one day, not so very far away, this, too, will be but a snapshot in the giant album of life. We had best preserve it from now.

Special Student West Babylon Junior High School eighth-grader Demetrius Bidot-Miles has been honored for his volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award recognizes those who have volunteered significant amounts of time to serve their communities. It is granted by the Prudential Spirit of Community

Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Eighth graders at Saints

Cyril and Methodius School commemorated the month in a number of way, including a dramatic recitation of the poem “I Am a Man: Ode to Martin Luther King, Jr.” by Eve Merriam. They also worked as a team to create and put

Hearts of Hope Babylon JuniorSenior High School Student Council members participated in a community service art project called Hearts of Hope on February 25th. This program, coordinated by the nonprofit organization Hope Floats, is a pay it forward effort designed to bring a smile to a community member in

need. Gathered in the cafeteria, Student Council members painted 100 ceramic hearts, some adorned with words of hope, to be distributed to cancer centers, military bases, hospitals, community organizations and national groups. Each heart has a serial number and is packaged with

a postcard featuring a message from the artist who painted it. Babylon School District held its first legislative and community advocacy meeting on February 26th. The goal of the program was to bring elected officials and community members together to work for the betterment of public education funding. Babylon School District administrators, Board of Education members and students, as well as local community groups and elected officials, including New York State Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, New York State Sen. ways to provide funding for state-mandated programs. “Our goal is not just to maintain programs but to enhance educational opportunities for all of our students,” said Babylon Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “Working together, we can advocate for the full restoration of GEA funds.” The legislators and administrators discussed the upcoming state budget process and the difficulties for school districts caused by a lack of state aid. The negative effects of New York State’s unpopular Gap Elimination Adjustment remained a particularly urgent topic of discussion, with the district providing sample letters and pamphlets in support of ending the

annual practice. Babylon has lost approximately $5 million since the GEA was implemented in the 20112012 school year. “Long Island school districts are fighting for their fair share of state aid,” said Saladino. “The budget must be balanced and recognize the needs of our communities on Long Island that pay a disproportionate share in state income taxes.” Assemblyman Saladino also addressed the issue of unfunded state mandates and Common Core. He proposed a reform plan to halt Common Core, establish a Blue Ribbon committee and bring back control to the local school districts.
