HOMETOWN HEROES - Last month, two local veterans were honored by the Town of Babylon Teamsters City Employees Union Local 237 as “Hometown Heroes” for their accomplishments and service both here and abroad. Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jackie Gordon and Councilman Tom Donnelly attended a ceremony held at VFW Post 2912 in Wyandanch for Town of Babylon residents William Hart and Michael Oakley. Hart served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Oakley served in Vietnam as a United States Army Paratrooper and received the Purple Heart for combat wounds he suffered on the battlefield. Supervisor Schaffer commended William and Michael for their service to our nation, and both men were honored with Certificates of Special Recognition.

I remember the day like it was yesterday… which is fairly impressive, considering it was actually 17 years ago, to the day in fact. This momentous occasion of which I speak, on March 8th, 2000, was the date I was told by our high school principal that I was, in fact, “officially” the valedictorian of our senior class. I can’t say the news was a complete shock, as we had all been given informal ranks pending the start of the college application process several months prior. At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes

on my transcript by my senior year; but class rank was not something I had ever particularly focused my attention on. I knew it existed, obviously; but most colleges were more concerned with your overall GPA and SAT scores, not your comparison among a class of your peers. As I rounded the corner on that afternoon, en route to our “rotunda” outside the cafeteria, I was startled to find the principal seated there next to one of my friends. “Oh good, you’re here,” he said. Uh oh, I thought. My mind raced, trying to determine what I could have done to warrant this unexpected visit. Next to him, my friend had a sly smile on his face. What is this about? I couldn’t imagine. “I have some news,” he grinned, standing up and extending his hand in congratulations. “It’s official – you’re number one.” And there it was. Twelve years of hard work and

dedication, culminating in that moment, that handshake – and those five words. It was unforgettable, so much so that I chose to capture the instant in one of my college scholarship essays. The theme was “The Most Memorable Moment of My Life.” And it was; possibly, still is. The bell rang, signaling it was time to head to our next class. But I had something to do first. I raced over to the wall of payphones by our front entrance, digging for quarters as I ran through the hallway (remember, this was 17 years ago). My hands shaking, I excitedly dialed my home number. “Mom!” I practically squealed into the receiver. “Guess what???” Since then, that date has been ingrained in my mind. Each year, it comes and goes, bringing with it a smile as I recall all the happy memories of a moment that seems so fresh … and yet, so very, very long ago. Officially.

Student Accomplishments The February 13th Babylon School District Board of Education Meeting celebrated student accomplishments throughout all grade levels. To begin the night’s recognitions, Babylon Junior-Senior High School students who represent Girl Scout Troop 283 were honored for recently earning the Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. According to the Girl Scouts of America’s website, this award is attained by contributing a positive change to your neighborhood or school in an effort to make it a better

place. As part of the district’s ongoing STEAM initiatives, students throughout the district are engaging in handson and critical thinking programs regularly. During the meeting, Babylon Memorial Grade School’s Programming Panthers and Babylon Junior-Senior High School VEX Robotics team helped to demonstrate some of the work they have completed in this area and their accomplishments to date. Following the demonstration, Babylon Memorial Grade School’s Programming Panthers were honored by the

Board of Education for their third-place win in a recent competition, earning the “Gracious Professionalism” award for showing kindness toward other competing teams and for advancing to the Championship Tournament held at Longwood High School on March 5th. The two Babylon Junior-Senior High School VEX Robotics teams were celebrated for competing against 48 top teams and taking home ninth and 24th place during their first competition at Berner Middle School VRC Qualifier.

Just Add Magic As part of its ongoing slate of social-emotional themed lessons, Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District hosted “Just Add Magic” among students at each grade level. During their lunch times, students were

assigned randomly to sit at different cafeteria tables - each of which was labeled with a character trait and various social scenarios designed to start conversations among them. Students were tasked with discussing their feelings and what

they believe is the proper way to respond to social interactions. “Just Add Magic” helped to foster students’ development of appropriate socialemotional responses and promoted the importance of good behavior.

Babylon School District recently came together to host a Souper Bowl of Caring – Charity Cook-Off and Cake-Off Fundraiser event. The program was a community-based gathering that brought more than 40 community members and local businesses to demonstrate their culinary abilities in an effort to support both local and nationally recognized charities and organizations. Throughout the event, district faculty, staff, students and family members created a number of delectable dishes ranging from colorfully decorated cupcakes all the way to

savory dishes of pasta. Additionally, multiple raffles took place, offering students a chance to prizes that included a pizza party with the principals, and a free tuxedo and prom dress. “It’s events like these that help to instill a strong sense of community which we take pride in having here at Babylon,” said Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “Due to the students’ outstanding efforts during the Souper Bowl of Caring, charities such as Boots on the Ground and Habitat for Humanity will be supplied with generous donations.” Prior to the big event,

staff and students promoted the day by decorating school windows with a Super Bowl and Panther Pay It Forward theme, and wore their favorite sportsthemed jerseys. The district raised a total of $3,300 that will be used in the Pay It Forward initiative to support Boots on the Ground and Suffolk County Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, all of the leftover soup and chili was donated to a community soup kitchen, and six boxes of canned goods were collected for the Rock Can Roll organization.

A new handcrafted bench at Babylon Memorial Grade School is offering students a unique place to sit, read and relax thanks to a joint effort by the school’s sixth-grade art club and a community member. The “Welcome Bench” was unveiled during a commemorative ceremony

in early February and students were eager to begin using it. Currently in its permanent position in the school lobby, the bench will provide students with a relaxing place to sit and take part in leisurely activities, such as reading which ties into the school’s wildly successful Pick a Reading Partner program.

The beautiful bench was designed by Eddie Altman, whose grandchildren currently attend Babylon schools. Art teacher Pat Stork, with assistance from her sixth-grade art club members, decorated the bench to reflect the school’s creative environment.
