Are We There Yet? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble. Of course, in this day and age, there is always the added benefit of GPS to fall back on. And by benefit, I mean often maddening source of frustration and bewilderment. Case in point: my friend and I have, over the last several years, attended several of the laser light shows at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. Of course, there are several possible routes to take, but all roads ultimately lead to one winding, somewhat meandering path through the

hilly terrain of Centerport. As these shows are generally in the evening, I always plug the address into the phone’s map so as to be sure I don’t miss a turn en route. Of the approximately half a dozen times we have headed this way, I can honestly say we have never managed to travel the same way twice. Never. Not once. Just last week, as if to prove the point, my phone’s darling virtual assistant proceeded to take us on a grand tour of the residential area surrounding the planetarium, complete with dozens of unnecessary turns (followed by U-turn’s and “rerouting”), forks in the road (continue heading straight, she said) and even a pass over a small body of water (do you remember there
being a bridge here before?). And on the return trip, there was more of the same – except, not quite the same, as we detoured through an entirely different neighborhood. How is this possible?? At a certain point, it became more a source of amusement, a fun guessing game as to which way she might send us next. Amazingly, our time of arrival only fluctuated by a minute or so, in spite of the fact that our route never came close to matching the virtually straight line that had appeared on the map. It was a bizarre journey, to be sure – and will continue to be, should we venture that way again. That, at least, seems to be a guarantee.

Reading Challenge From February 1stMarch 2nd, Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District celebrated Parents As Reading Partners with activities, challenges and special events. The theme for this year’s event “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” also coincides with Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2nd. Throughout the month, students were challenged with reading
along with their family members. In addition, an author visit with Peter Catalanotto took place on February 15th, followed by a community reading day on February 16th. Other activities included the Great Read Aloud Day and TV-less Tuesdays. The school also held a Read Across America Day and a mannequin reading challenge to add to the month of fun.

The North Babylon Administrator’s Association purchased several items from the White House Historical Association including metal-plated bookmarks featuring a view of the White House Christmas tree from the East Room, the great ceremonial room of the White House in the State Floor. These bookmarks were presented to each student. The district also extends its sincerest appreciation to RSVP Tuxedos in Bay Shore for its generosity in helping to outfit the students with tuxedo and shoe rentals at no cost. “We’re overjoyed for our students,” said district Director of Art and Music Programs Dr.
Kim Lowenborg-Coyne. “We truly appreciate all the hard work that has gotten them to this level of achievement, and we know that this performance will inspire them to continue to perform music throughout their lives.” North Babylon Select Choir’s incredible honor is a testament to the level of musical instruction in the district as well as the students’ and faculty members’ skills and dedication to choral excellence.

Members of the North Babylon High School Select Choir, who had the prestigious honor of performing at the White House as part of its Holiday Open House, were honored at the board of education’s February meeting. This was the first time in the school district’s history that the group was invited to perform on the White House’s grand stage. At the meeting, Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach commended director
Christina Henderson and each of the 30 students for their unwavering commitment to their crafts and for earning this tremendous honor. He then showed a video, which also featured various photos, of the group’s visit. Each student received a copy of this video as a gift — in addition to certificates — and the group collectively also received two proclamations from Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Shaffer. They then showcased the remarkable talents that earned them the White House invitation by performing for meeting attendees. The White House visit was comprised of the group’s performance of a variety of musical selections over the course of two hours. To prepare for the performance, the group rehearsed each school day, in addition to some weekend days. To be considered for invitation,

Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro is pleased to extend an invitation to Deer Park, Half Hollow Hills, North Babylon and South Huntington elementary school students to participate in the Suffolk County Legislature’s “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Established in 2007, the competition invites elementary school students to promote the importance of pool safety by creating a poster that illustrates one or more safety tips. One poster is selected from all of those submitted to be used as part of a countywide message from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services in its seasonal safety campaign. Two other student entries are named as second and third place winners. “The ‘Be Pool Smart’ poster contest is a fun way to engage children in spreading the important messages about how a few simple steps and precautions can help us avoid tragedies around swimming pools,” said Legislator D’Amaro. Last year, John F. Kennedy Intermediate School student Oviya Omprakash of Deer Park was selected as the Suffolk County second place winner. She was honored along with her art and classroom teachers before the entire Suffolk County Legislature. The contest is open to all primary, intermediate and elementary school students. Interested students should create a poster, no larger than 22” x 30”, with the title “Be Pool Smart.” It should creatively illustrate one or more the following ten safety tips: • Make sure children under five years of age are always within “arms reach” when in or near the water • Be watchful of all children at all times
