Acting Commissioner Patrick Beckley of the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES) has appointed Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) as Deputy Fire Coordinator (DFC) – All Hazards. “Suffolk County FRES’ Deputy Fire Coordinator Program is vital to ensuring the continuity of emergency operations during a multiagency response and is important in terms of communication among first responder agencies in Suffolk County,” said Acting Commissioner Beckley. “On behalf of FRES, we thank Legislator Donnelly for his advocacy and commitment to the local fire and EMS service. We look forward to having him further serve the County as a Deputy Fire Coordinator.” Legislator Donnelly, an almost-four-decade Deer Park Fire Department volunteer, retired as a 27-year member of the Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) immediately after election to his first term in the Legislature in 2017. He is the appointed Legislative representative on the Suffolk Regional EMS Council (REMSCO) and serves on the Legislature’s Public Safety; Fire, Rescue and Emergency Medical Services & Preparedness; Health and Ways & Means committees. He volunteered with the Office of Emergency Management

(OEM) from the beginning and throughout the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, coordinating and implementing plans for local communities and ensuring that PPE and other materials were distributed to Suffolk County residents. “Throughout my career in public service, public safety has been and always will be my top priority,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank Acting Commissioner Beckley for appointing me to this position, and I look forward to serving all of the residents of Suffolk County in this role as I continue serving my neighbors in the 17th Legislative District as their legislator.” Legislator Donnelly’s appointment to the volunteer DFC position runs through December 31, 2023. ###

The North Babylon High School’s Quiz Bowl’s varsity and junior varsity teams are back to competing in-person this year and have found much success in their matches. Earlier this month, both teams competed in their first Regional Quiz Bowl of the year against Copiague High School. The junior varsity team, led by captain Brianna Henriquez, won their match 87-64 and the varsity team, led by captain Victoria Fowler, won their match 185-25. They will be competing in two

more Regional Quiz Bowl matches on Feb. 2 and Feb. 16 with the opportunity to compete in the playoff round in April. This will be their 10th consecutive year if they qualify for the playoff round. In addition to their regional matches, the Quiz Bowl teams have also triumphed in Quiz Bowl tournaments, competing against high school teams from throughout New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. They’ve contested in matches that took place at Smithtown High School,

Kellenberg Memorial High School and Choate Academy in Connecticut. They finished with a 6-4 overall winning record in all three tournaments. In addition, junior Spiros Manolas was one of the top 10 individual scorers at the Smithtown High School Quiz Bowl and received an award. Their next Quiz Bowl tournament will be at Smithtown High School West on Feb. 19. The district is proud of the teams’ success this year and wishes them best of luck in future matches.

It works tirelessly to fulfill its mission to “ensure 9/11 responders, firefighters, police and military are never forgotten and provides financial assistance where possible.” Many 9/11 charities are supported by the foundation and it is also active in the local community, giving back by creating fundraisers and adopting families during the holidays, among other things. Legislator Donnelly, a 9/11 first responder himself, worked with and knew John McNamara personally during his years as a member of the FDNY. Both John’s wife Jennifer and son Jack are active in the foundation where Jennifer serves as founder and president of the board. “I’ll never forget running into John at Ground Zero in the aftermath of September 11 and his dedication to bringing closure to grieving families as part of the search and recovery

operation,” said Legislator Donnelly. “The Johnny Mac Foundation is truly one of the premier charities in the first responder community and a wonderful tribute and legacy to the incredible person that John McNamara was. On behalf of the entire Legislature, I thank Jennifer, Jack and everyone involved with the Foundation for the incredible work they do to ensure 9/11 responders are properly taken care of.” The Johnny Mac Foundation is proud to have recently celebrated the opening of the new BayportBlue Point Library, Number 14 on John’s list of last wishes he created before he passed. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) honored the FDNY Firefighter John F. McNamara Foundation, also known as the “Johnny Mac Foundation,” for their 10 year anniversary at the February 1 general meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature in Hauppauge. The “Johnny Mac Foundation” was created in 2010 after FDNY Firefighter John F. McNamara sadly passed away from cancer related to his 500+ hour rescue efforts in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Legislator Donnelly presented a County Proclamation to John’s wife Jennifer McNamara, joined by their son Jack McNamara and board members Janet Borowski, Dr. Kathleen Devine and Sheriff Errol Toulon. Fun Facts About Lefties Left-handed, lefty, southpaw - these are all terms used to describe people who favor their left hands for writing, throwing a ball and myriad other activities. It is estimated that between 10 and 12 percent of all people are left-handed. Although that makes southpaws an undeniable minority, the number of left-handed people is creeping up. Left-handers are worthy of notice and recognition. As such, explore these interesting facts and figures about left-handers. Sports Proclivity Being left-handed may confer an advantage for athletes. Wayne Gretzky, Sandy Koufax and Martina Navratilova are just a few of the many accomplished left-handed sports legends. Sports scientist Florian Loffing with the Institute of Sport Science, University of Oldenburg in Germany found that in sports where there is a short time constraint, lefties appeared to excel. That could be why he found 26 percent of the top male players in table tennis are lefties. And sports like baseball and cricket are dominated by left-handed players. Health Risks And Benefits Lefties should take notice that there may be some side effects to being left-handed. According to a 2010 study published in the journal Pediatrics, researchers found those who were left-handed had an increased risk for dyslexia, ADHD and certain mood disorders. It could be tied to the hemispheres of the brain and how 30 percent of left-handed people are partial to the right hemisphere or have no dominant hemisphere for language functioning. Conversely, lefties can bounce back from stroke or other brain-related injuries more readily than righties, according to data published in 2015 in Scientific Reports. Also, a study published in Laterality found that left-handed

people are less likely to suffer arthritis and ulcers. More Creative Lefties are more likely to be artistic or innovative. Research published in the American Journal of Psychology found there is some evidence that lefthanded people are better at divergent thinking, a method of idea generation that explores many possible solutions. The LeftHanders Club, a pro-lefty advocacy group, also found that left-handed individuals tend to be drawn to careers in the arts, music, sports, and informationtechnology fields. Ambidextrous Inclinations The world is geared towards being righthanded, with buttons on jackets, doorknobs, desks in school, and more designed with right-handed people in mind. Therefore, many lefties become ambidextrous simply because they have to, according to data published in Reader’s Digest. Presidential Possibilities? Many notable people have been left-handed, including eight U.S. Presidents. James A. Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Harry S. Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama all are or were lefthanded. Even though the world may not have been designed for left-handed people, lefties certainly thrive.

The Long Island Pet Expo Is Back!

The Long Island Pet Expo returns for the first time since the outbreak of COVID on March 5-6, 2022, with fur flying entertainment, dog sporting competitions and educational programs designed for the whole family. The event returns to the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena and features many special attractions, pet adoptions and outstanding shopping for pet lovers and their pets. “The Long Island area is passionate about animals and pets of all kinds,” said show co-producer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows, which runs seven similar events in the northeast. “We are excited to be back in the area after a long, unplanned break. The number of pet licenses

in the region has almost doubled since the start of COVID, and the interest in the event seems to have doubled too based on our phones and social media activity.” The 80+ special exhibits always feature some of the hottest new products coming out often before they hit the retail shelves. Dogs on leashes are always welcome, and several area rescue groups with adoptable pets will be on hand. Popular performers and presenters include Diana Frohman and her beautiful Dancing Dogs. Schutzhund Demonstration by Maximum K9 Service , the Dog Lovers Days Lure Course, Johnny Peers Muttville Mix, Doggie U K9 Academy Rainforest Reptiles, TICA

Championship Cat Shows and more. “We always have fun at these events, but we also are strong supporters of responsible pet ownership and humane values when it comes to all issues involving animals and pets,” said Garetano. “We partner with several community organizations, shelters, veterinarians and other animal lovers educate and inform when it comes to best practices for training, feeding and all aspects of pet care.” Community and rescue organizations participating in the show include Tylers Rescue, Chippy’s Angels to the Rescue, Haven Animal Foundation, Last Chance Animal Rescue, Pet Partners, LI Golden Retriever Rescue, and more The event is expected to draw over 10,000 attendees over the weekend. Admission is Adults $15, Kids 3-11 are $6, and those under three years old are always free. Saturday March 5th the hours are 10 am to 7 pm, and on Sunday, March 6th, from 10 am to 5pm.
