Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilmen Terence McSweeney and DuWayne Gregory recently gathered with Animal Shelter Director Chris Elton and the Town’s companion dog Trigger to celebrate the amazing outcome of the Betty White challenge. As a result of the challenge, The Town of Babylon Animal Shelter received nearly $5,000 in checks and a substantial amount of goods donated. Animal shelters across Long Island raised thousands of dollars in this celebratory fundraising campaign created through social media. It’s been reported that the challenge raised close to $99,000 in
donations on Long Island and $12.7 million across the country. Iconic actress Betty White passed away just weeks before her milestone 100th birthday, and as a result people on social media wanted to celebrate her and her love of helping animals in need. The Betty White Challenge was created to celebrate her birthday by asking people to donate to an animal shelter of their choice on January 19th. “Thanks to the Betty White Challenge, the Babylon Animal Shelter took in so many donations in such a short period of time, we were amazed and overjoyed. We received chew toys, leashes, collars,
dog food, cat food, treats for dogs, treats for cats, beds for all and so much more. In addition we received nearly $5,000 in checks and gift certificates all of which will go toward the care of the cats and dogs of Babylon,” said Animal Shelter Director Chris Elton. “On behalf of the Babylon Town Board and all of our friends at the Animal Shelter, thank you to the residents of Babylon who once again demonstrated their tremendous generosity by participating in this historical challenge in memory of Betty White,” added Supervisor Rich Schaffer.

South Shore Audubon Society Offers Environmental Scholarship
The South Shore Audubon Society is beginning now to accept applications for a $1000 award, the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship 2022. College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or

Family & Children’s Association www.fcali.org With locations across Nassau and Suffolk, Family & Children’s Association (FCA) is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to providing help and hope to Long Island’s most vulnerable children, families, seniors and communities. FCA envisions a Long Island where a legacy of optimal health, educational success and economic security passes from one generation to the next; each year it serves 30,000 individuals and families in Suffolk and Nassau counties. Its mission strives to make our island a better place for all of us to live, work and raise a family. FCA has served Long Islanders since 1884 and today its more than 40 programs fall into five big areas of need: Addiction Prevention, Treatment & Recovery Taking on addiction from every angle, beginning with prevention. Recovery support services are offered Islandwide with offices from Hempstead to Westhampton Beach.

Children’s Mental Health & Wellness This division offers an array of services and supports designed to promote the health and wellness of children and their families. The services are for individuals up to 21 years of age who have or are at risk of developing a mental health diagnosis. Services are always free to clients, voluntary, family-driven, strength-based, and culturally competent, with location and scheduling tailored to each family’s needs. They also provide support for the families of individuals with mental and/ or behavioral health issues. Prevention & Family Support FCA’s prevention team provides critical services to at-risk children and families including a nursery co-op program,
alcohol and substance abuse and gun violence r e d u c t i o n program, and more, through collaboration, education, and advocacy. Residential Care FCA operates four residences that focus on quality care, seamless transitions and well-managed aftercare services for youth. Nassau Haven and Walkabout provide emergency shelter and longer term transitional housing for homeless, runaway and trafficked youth. Two other residences support children and young adults with serious emotional disturbances or mental health issues. Senior & Adult Services FCA believes that every senior deserves to live with dignity, safety and independence. FCA helps more than 10,000 seniors a year with meal deliveries, caregiver support, home visits for companionship, elder abuse prevention and advocacy. The number of people who turn to FCA for help is growing and with it, the need for donations to close gaps in government funding. FCA’s programs and services are greatly enhanced by the involvement of others, whether through donations of time or money, and welcome the help of all Long Islanders to further its mission. This basic boating knowledge course will give you the education required to obtain the SAFE BOATING CERTIFICATE, which is mandatory for Jet Ski operation, regardless of your age. approved Laminated United States Power Squadrons America’s Boating Course Certificate, which is recognized nationally and never expires. Registration for the course is required in advance of the course and subject to availabilities. Local not-for-profit organization, Heroes Among Us joins with the United Veterans Organization of Nassau County and local Veterans of Foreign Wars groups, and the Nassau County Executive’s office to build a monument in Eisenhower Park to honor all post 9/11 servicemen and women. The monument will join other memorials in Veterans Memorial Park which honor veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans Monument will be the only monument of its kind on Long Island and one of the first in New York State honoring the courage, dedication, and bravery of United States servicemen and women who fought in military conflicts after 9/11. Over this twenty-year period, 7,000 servicemen and women died in battle and 30,000 post 9/11 veterans have died by suicide. The monument will provide a permanent reminder of their service and provide a much-needed sanctuary and reflection space for veterans along with their families. “We are excited to have the assistance from our
community to properly respect and honor our veterans in building this monument, which we feel was overdue,” said Virginia Cervasio, founder of Heroes Among Us. The estimated cost to build the monument is $150,000 and all the groups involved are currently working to raise the needed funds.
