We all deal with increases in expenses all the time. We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021. These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials. On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all. All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs. They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer. Many businesses are

being enabled to rely on government handouts which ultimately become yet another cost to all of us hard working taxpayers. Government assistance is meant for those who are truly in need of and deserving of the help. These less fortunate Americans are the only ones who should be allowed to benefit from these costly government services. So, if you find yourself having to pay more for a product or service, or you seem to be waiting longer and longer for assistance in places of business or of government service, realize where this all started, and who is paying for all the wasteful government spending. It is US, THE TAXPAYERS.

Finding Zen By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind. When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby. I had originally decided to look into the practice after

“retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed. Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing. Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to

the practice. And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect. Students taking part within Babylon JuniorSenior High School’s Distributive Education Clubs of America recently competed against more than 2,000 fellow high school-level students at the Suffolk County DECA Regional Competition held at Suffolk County Community College in Selden. “Our students performed extremely well in a number of categories including Public Speaking, Visual Advertising, Sports Marketing, Restaurant Management, Job Interview and Finance,” said Claire Reilly, director of the Babylon JuniorSenior High School Practical Arts Department. “We had several first- and second-place winners as well, and I am extremely

proud of all of the participating students.” Approximately 36 Babylon Junior-Senior High School students will be moving on to compete at the New York State DECA Career Competition in March. Additionally, the DECA students recently attended Babylon Episcopal Church for their Nourish Babylon initiative in an effort to help set up, clean and serve the patrons. Students

were happy to help out alongside fellow DECA member Gillian Morrow who is a regular Monday Night volunteer at the soup kitchen. According to their website, since their inception in 1947, DECA has prepared emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the world.

Five Tips On Moving (NAPSI)—According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 12 percent of Americans move to new homes every year. The next time you’re among them, you may be able to save time, trouble and money when you choose a professional mover—you won’t have to worry about renting equipment, paying hidden costs, handling heavy or bulky items and being responsible if something goes wrong. Here are five hints to help.

1. Be wary of any “guaranteed” estimates offered over the phone or online. Make sure you show the mover everything that needs to be moved, and get at least three estimates to compare. Avoid any that are too high or too low. 2. Check the company’s ratings with the Better Business Bureau and other consumer websites, and ask family and friends for referrals. 3. Make sure all agreements are in writing, and get a copy of everything

you sign, especially the bill of lading. Never sign any blank forms. 4. Ask questions if you don’t understand something, and make sure your mover has your cell phone number to reach you. 5. Don’t Let Your Car Make Your Allergies Worse Cabin air filters clean the incoming air, removing allergens, as long as they’re replaced regularly. “A dirty or clogged cabin air filter can cause contaminants to become so concentrated in the cabin that passengers actually breathe in more fumes and particles when riding in the car than when walking down the street,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Replacing the cabin air filter is a simple way for you and your passengers to breathe easier while driving.” In addition to trapping pollen, bacteria, dust and exhaust gases, the cabin air filter prevents leaves, bugs and other debris from entering the

heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) system. A restricted cabin air filter can mean musty odors in the vehicle and impair airﬂow in the HVAC system, possibly causing interior heating and cooling problems. Over time, the heater and air conditioner may also become damaged by corrosion. Cabin air filters should not be cleaned and reinstalled. Instead, they should be replaced every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, or per the owner’s manual. Most filters are accessible through a panel in the HVAC housing, which may be under the hood or in the interior of the car. An automotive service technician can locate the cabin filter and replace it according to the vehicle’s

owner manual. Some filters require basic hand tools to remove and install their replacement while others just need your hands.
