with Jamie Lynn Ryan Seen at the local supermarket last week: a gentleman piling each one of his items into his cart, refusing to pay the 5¢ plastic bag fee that was recently passed in Suffolk County. “Nope,” he shook his head vigorously. “I’ll throw it all in my backseat and carry every single item into my house by hand if I have to.” The checkout clerk, somewhat perplexed, acquiesced. “Alright,” she replied politely. “Whatever you’d prefer - that’s why we ask if you’d like a bag.” As he rolled his overflowing shopping cart away, fellow clerks exchanged raised eyebrows and shrugged. “It’s one thing when they have a handful of items, but $300 worth of food and perishables?” She seemed incredulous. “That’s really standing on principle.”
The clerk went on to list the bizarre scenarios she had witnessed over these last several weeks - from people juggling glass bottles (an attempt which, needless to say, didn’t end so well) to the woman who insisted on cradling about 5 pounds of meat in her arms. All to save a nickel. I have to admit, I was only vaguely aware that this proposed law was set to take effect until I found myself running into the store for some last minute New Year’s Eve snacks. Only then did I see the signs warning of the impending surcharge posted at each register, plastered on every entrance and exit, along with racks of “reusable” plastic bags for sale at each counter. I did some quick math: so, if I buy an allegedly sturdier bag for 10¢ - assuming I get more than two uses out of it, I’ll be

ahead of the game. I considered further the fact that, nearly every time I am in any sort of store but especially those of the supermarket variety - I am repeatedly amazed at the lack of, shall we say, bagging skills employed by most clerks. I invariably wind up with either 27 bags with one or two items in each, or the equally daunting 20 pound bag filled to the brim and unlikely to make it to the car without breaking, let alone up a flight of stairs into my apartment. I’ll bag my own, thanks, I always request. And now, if I’m going to pay for them, you can be sure I’ll be taking matters into my own hands. Preferably without an armful of glass bottles and pork chops to contend with as well. Just when food shopping was beginning to become routine…

Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilmembers Jackie Gordon and Terence McSweeney and Town Clerk Geraldine Compitello recently recognized local football player Ernesto Mitchell of Wheatley Heights. Mitchell, 16, earned the
Bob Collotta Award for being the top linebacker in Suffolk County last season. Mitchell’s stifling defensive prowess helped his Half Hollow Hills East Thunderbirds make their deepest playoff run in recent history. Mitchell, joined by his mother and father (Tonya
and Roselio) received a Certificate of Special Recognition from the Town Board members. Supervisor Schaffer congratulated Mitchell and encouraged him to stay dedicated not only on the field, but also in the classroom.

Of the 33 total students, 24 received the AP Scholar title for receiving a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. Four students were given the title of AP Scholar with Honor, as they achieved an average score of at least 3.25 on all of their AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!
“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered nonprofit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan
mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information.

Lecture on the Law Students enrolled in Criminal Justice and Law and Order classes at Babylon Junior-Senior High School learned about the intricacies of the law during a recent in-school lecture with the newly appointed Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy
Sini. While visiting the students, Sini spoke about criminal justice practices in Suffolk, offering the students a firsthand glimpse into the highly sought-after career path. Additionally, he spoke about how he is working
diligently alongside county officials and the Suffolk County Police Department to rid the MS-13 street gang off of Long Island. The students, who are currently in the midst of research projects on gangs, asked Sini questions to further support their work.
Recognized for Success The Babylon JuniorSenior High School girls varsity team recently finished up an incredibly successful season, acquiring a number of awards and accolades not only for their athletic prowess, but for their dedication to academics as well. Throughout the duration of the fall season, the team was named Section XI Class B Champions, Long Island Class B Champions, a New York State Academic
Team of Distinction and received the League VII Sportsmanship Award, to name a few. The team also garnished an impressive overall team GPA of 99.959, proving that they are just as committed to their studies as they are on the soccer field. Additionally, multiple student-athletes on the team were presented with individual-based awards for their successes both on the field and in the classroom. On January 9th,
several Babylon Village representatives visited the team in Babylon JuniorSenior High School’s Rowe Hall to present them with tokens of appreciation, and offer their personal congratulations. Babylon Mayor Ralph Scordino, Deputy Mayor Kevin Muldowney, Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez attended the ceremony.

As a result, many couples invest a portion of their budgets into spa and beauty treatments, with many even hiring salon stylists to ensure their weddingday looks are flawless.
One way to “tress to impress” is to experiment with some color. Well-placed highlights, balayage treatments, ombre or peek-a-boo underlights can add an extra spark to a bride’s normal hairstyle. Speak with a qualified stylist about what you plan to achieve with a wedding-day look, so color can be applied correctly.
Retro glamour
Brides may want to harken back to an era when glamour reigned supreme. Replicate one of the short styles of the 1940s or 1950s, paying homage to Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall or Judy Garland.
Braids and plaits
Braids can add whimsy to shoulder-length or shorter hair. In addition, braids can anchor short locks when an up-do is desired. Braids can be placed into the front or rear crown of the head to look like a hair halo or crown.
Use embellishments
If short hair cannot be gathered into a braid or bun, you can opt for adorned pins, barrettes or headbands to add a touch of sparkle to the look. Ask a stylist to tease the crown of your hair to achieve a little more height and impact.

Many women with short hair find that using bobby pins to pin up select areas of their hair can help achieve a partial up-do look without the need for longer locks. Experienced stylists will know how to manipulate hair effectively to create this look. Small tendrils of hair can be left free and curled for a less structured, more natural effect. Brides-to-be with short hair do not need to fret nor make drastic changes to their hairstyles to look beautiful on their wedding days. Short hair can be manipulated into many camera-ready creations.

ocal vendors are often a go-to choice when couples are planning their wedding ceremonies and receptions. As the “shop local” movement grows in popularity, weddings present a prime opportunity to embrace this movement.
Couples may have different ideas regarding where to tie the knot, but local vendors can be hired regardless of geography. Brides magazine says the biggest factor influencing wedding location is the size of the guest list and the number of people who wouldn’t be able to attend if the wedding was in a particular locale. Hometowns might be the traditional choice regarding wedding location, but the XO Group says one in four couples now host destination weddings. Once couples choose a town or city to host their weddings, they can begin exploring the benefits of working with locally-based vendors.

Wedding transportation options abound, and some are more popular than others. The following are some of the ways couples are getting to the altar on time:
Exotic limousines: The chauffeur-driven limousine continues to be one of the most popular methods of transportation. However, to set their weddings apart, couples are trending away from traditional stretch limousines and renting something more trendy, such as limos built upon sports cars. SUV-based limos are still popular, with Hummers, Escalades and Navigators offering the wow factor. Swearing In Ceremony Three new and two existing Town of Babylon officials took the Oath of Office before the January 2nd, 2018 board meeting at Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez began their new terms after being re-elected in November. Councilman Anthony Manetta and Town Clerk Geraldine Compitello began their first terms in office following their victories. Councilman Terence McSweeney also began his first term in office after being appointed by Supervisor Schaffer to fill the seat left vacant by
former Councilman Tom Donnelly. The appointment was unanimously approved by the Town Board at the beginning of the meeting. Councilman Manetta is the former CEO and executive director of the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency (IDA). There, he worked on economic development projects and community outreach. Councilman McSweeney is 14-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and a volunteer firefighter in North Babylon. He has spent the past several years in different roles in his
community, most recently as a special assistant to Supervisor Schaffer. Compitello, an Amityville native, worked in Supervisor Schaffer’s office as Deputy Chief of Staff since 2013.
