The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes

a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Piloting An Enrichment Program West Babylon School District is piloting an enrichment program for grades 1-5. The program is beginning at Tooker Avenue Elementary School this year with the goal of expanding to each of the elementary schools in the near future. Since the elementary schools revamped to a period schedule a few years ago to allow for dedicated reading/writing, social studies and science periods, there’s now an STUDENTS CELEBRATE DIVERSITY - First graders in Lisa DeGennaro’s class at opportunity for a flex John F. The class read “The Crayon Box That Talked” by Shane Derolf. In the story, the crayons did not get along because they all looked different. However, when they worked together, they created a beautiful picture. The class created their own crayon box to display and wrote about how although they all look different, they can create a beautiful picture when they work together. That period, according to Tooker Avenue Principal Charles Germano, is being used for dedicated intervention services in addition to enrichment opportunities. “We are making sure that each student is getting exactly what they need, whether it be support services in the appropriate areas or academic enrichment to challenge them,” he said. Students are pulled out of their classrooms to work with teacher Mr. DeBiccari for their enrichment lessons, which

focus on hands-on, STEMbased activities as well as advanced reading, writing and math. Students are chosen to participate in the program based on data and teacher recommendations. Students who are receiving tier 1 or 2 support services are also re-evaluated three times per year to make sure each of their specific needs are being met. The overall goal is to have specific growth in each of the subject areas while helping to create stronger students with greater academic success.
