Art Exhibitions

Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information.

Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him.

DECA Students Shine Student representatives of Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s Distributive Education Clubs of America recently attended a DECA competition held at Suffolk County Community College in Selden, competing against other prominent high schools from Suffolk in multiple professional categories. Throughout the course of the competition, Babylon displayed their talents

against other Long Island schools and performed incredibly well in events spanning subjects such as accounting, finance, apparel and accessories marketing, public speaking, job interview and visual advertising. Due to their outstanding efforts, 62 of the total 100 Babylon-Junior Senior High School students have qualified to compete in the New York State Career Competition held

in Rochester, New York in March. “This is the best showing that we have ever had, and I am extremely proud of all students involved for their hard work and effort,” said Babylon Junior-Senior High School Director of Business Education Claire Reilly. “In addition, they performed in a very professional manner and represented Babylon so well.”

On December 28th, 2017, Michael Quinn, a Life Scout from Troop 399, North Babylon completed his Eagle project which was to donate Smile Bags for children at Cohen’s Children’s Center. Michael organized two fundraising events to

collect the money needed to pack each bag with small gifts and activities for the children. The actual Smile bags were provided by The Amanda Styles Cirelli Foundation, which was created in memory of Amanda, who passed away at the young age of 29 after

her courageous battle with cancer. With help from members of his troop and the North Babylon community, he provided 30 bags and collected over $850 for the children!

We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

Healthy Living Center The YMCA of Long Island (YMCALI) announced today that it will take the next steps in pursuing their vision to open a new, stateof-the-art $18.8 million facility in Wyandanch. The exciting news comes after the YMCA was officially awarded a $3.5 million Empire State Development grant as recommended by the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council (LIREDC) as part of its ongoing initiative to support the growing Long Island downtown area. The YMCA of Long Island was recommended as one of 121 priority projects by the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council and the REDC awarded a total of $84.3 million to 98 Long Island projects, which includes the Wyandanch YMCA project. The 47,000 squarefoot-facility will provide residents of Wyandanch and the neighboring communities access to health services and education programs never before offered on Long Island, including a firsttime partnership with community health care provider HRHCare. “We are delighted to have been awarded the grant for our vision to bring a YMCA to Wyandanch and deeply value the alignment with the Long

Island Regional Economic Development Council’s strategy to bring a greater Long Island to residents in the community,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO, YMCA of Long Island. “This grant is critical in helping us get this project started, and we recognize Wyandanch is a community that needs and deserves a state-of-the-art YMCA, the first-of-its-kind integrated Healthy Living Center on Long Island. In addition to being a resource for child care and healthy living programs, the Wyandanch Y will also provide significant job opportunities to local residents.” The $18.8 million project will follow the YMCA’s new national model of offering true Healthy Living Centers and treating the whole person by working in tandem with healthcare partners. The new facility will include a fitness center, pool and childcare services as well as health and wellness programs in collaboration with HRHCare to address chronic disease prevention and recovery, offering a healthcare continuum for members. The Wyandanch YMCA will have a concentration of programs for the whole family that focuses on health & wellness, leadership, and water safety. Pre-teens and

teens can also participate in leadership, mentorship, and job training. The facility will offer many amenities to residents of Wyandanch and the surrounding communities, including a pool in the heart of Wyandanch Village driving traffic to Wyandanch Plaza and supporting nearby retail space. Located adjacent to the 920 car MTA parking facility, parking will be convenient for commuters, residents and visitors from surrounding communities. The YMCA will have public private partnership with the support of Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, and the master developer, the Albanese Organization. The YMCA opens its doors to all who want to participate in the programs and services offered to children, teens, adults and seniors, meeting the communities’ deepest needs. The Y provides membership and program financial assistance each and every year to individuals and families. In 2016, $2.3M was awarded to applicants across Long Island.
