North Babylon School District’s Board of Education and administration had the honor of recognizing the efforts of two students for their participation in the New York State School Music Association All-State Conference in Rochester and presenting a certificate of tenure to a staff member. North Babylon High School seniors Sophia
Bonventre and Esther Duclair were commended for their performance in the 2019 All-State Choir earlier this month. Sophia performed as a soprano 1 with the Treble Chorus Ensemble and Esther performed with the Mixed Chorus Ensemble. They were selected based on having scored an A+ on a level six All-State solo. The district was also
proud to present science teacher Gayle Estrada with a certificate of tenure for exhibiting hard work and dedication to her position. Under the direction of Choir Director Tiina Buehler, the North Babylon High School’s Vocal Point Ensemble also serenaded board members and the crowd with festive melodies in honor of the holiday season.

Lessons From A Senator Babylon High School Advanced Placement Government and Government 12R classes had the chance to take an inside look at the role government plays on the local and state level during a recent visit with New York State Senator Phil Boyle. During the workshop, Boyle spoke about his background, the role of the senate and the reasons why he chose to get into politics. “I’ve always wanted to do
something to help people, which is why I ran for office,” he said. The 30-year career politician also described how elected officials are often best known for few key issues. For Senator Boyle, he noted that his key issues are working to combat the heroin and opioid problem, access to forensic resources and animal welfare. Concluding the program, students asked the senator
questions about key issues. “This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about the government from someone who works on their behalf in the senate,” said Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “We were very appreciative of Senator Boyle visiting our school and donating his time to speak with our students.”

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,
Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened.
