It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I

months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.

Laptop Donation Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recently visited the Family Life Center in Wyandanch to present two surplus laptops donated by the county. The laptops will be put to use in the center’s after school homework help program. “I am very happy to
be able to secure this donation for the Family Life Center,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “I am a huge proponent of all that they do for the youth of the Wyandanch community, and I am confident that these much-needed laptops will go to good use.” The Family Life Center (FLC) is a non-
profit organization in Wyandanch with a focus on delivering a broad range of supportive services for adults and children and equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to achieve better social, economic, educational, health and occupational outcomes in their lives.

WORKING AND PLAYING - In celebration of the holidays, students at Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District played the computer-based game “Break Out” during their library periods on December 21st. St. Joseph’s Choir and friends presented a concert in benefit of the Mercy INN Soup Kitchen on Sunday, December 11th featuring Handel’s MESSIAH. Pastor Rev. Charles N. Mangano led the opening prayer after a moving candlelight procession and the closing prayer before the majestic “Hallelujah Chorus.” This yearly benefit concert has taken place at the Church of St. Joseph in Babylon under the direction of Dr. Marie Drohan for more than 20 years with all proceeds
benefiting this worthy cause. The Mercy INN Soup Kitchen is located in Wyandanch and accepts donations all year long. On a historical note, Handel conducted numerous performances of the MESSIAH, many of these were benefits for the Foundling Hospital in London, of which Handel was a benefactor. The thousands of pounds raised for charity as a result of Handel’s performances of the MESSIAH led one biographer to note, “The MESSIAH fed the hungry, clothed the naked, and
fostered the orphan… more than any other single musical production in this country or any other.” Another wrote, “Perhaps the works of no other composer have so largely contributed to the relief of human suffering.” As a result of the choir’s outstanding performance of beautiful sacred music which also included Pergolesi’s MAGNIFICAT, Caccini’s “Ave Maria” and Gounod’s “Sanctus”, donations have poured in to the tune of $10,156.
COMMUNITY HONORS NIGHT - The Sons of Italy Constantino Brumidi Lodge #2211 held a Community Honors Night in November. The Lodge’s goal was to honor the heroes in our community. At the same time, the Lodge also unveiled a banner that now hangs outside our building on Deer Park Avenue expressing support for our veterans, police, fire and EMTs. recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal. In addition to choosing healthy cooking methods, health-conscious men and women can employ the following strategies to make meals as healthy as possible:
A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should
Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food. Stock up on healthy recipes. Purchase cookbooks that showcase healthy recipes, or peruse the internet for heathy recipes. Many websites cater to health-conscious foodies who do not want to sacrifice their health to enjoy delicious meals. Choose smart fats. All oils are loaded in
calories, but healthy oils can still be used without sacrificing flavor. Olive oil is an unsaturated fat that is a much healthier choice than butter or saturated fats. When cooking with oil, do so in moderation.
Think about baking foods. Baking is handy for more than breads and desserts. Baking is one method of cooking that may not require the addition of fat. Meats that are baked can be placed on top of a rack, so that excess fat drips off and is contained in the bottom of the pan. Explore poaching, broiling and grilling. Poaching, broiling and grilling are three healthy alternatives to frying. Broiling and grilling expose food to direct heat, so it is a fast method of cooking and may not be appropriate for foods that require longer cooking times to tenderize. Poaching is the process of simmering foods in water or another flavorful liquid. Use minimally refined ingredients. Select among whole grains and ingredients that

have not been refined. The closer a product is to its natural state, the more nutritional properties it is likely to have retained. Season foods yourself. Rather than relying on prepackaged seasonings, mix your own blends. Packaged seasonings generally contain a lot of salt. Use fresh herbs whenever possible for the freshest of flavor. Add heat for flavor. Spicy pepper, dry mustard and other zesty flavor enhancers can make foods taste delicious without added calories. Try low-fat or fat-free dairy. Substitute low-fat alternatives for full-fat dairy items. For example, Greek yogurt can sometimes be used in place of less healthy ingredients such as mayonnaise. Trim excess fats. Prepare meats and poultry well by trimming the fat and skin to make the final product even healthier.
The Importance of Annual Health Exams
Annual health exams are a key component of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A person may not see the need to visit the doctor if he or she is feeling well, but not every disease or condition manifests itself in a way that men and women can detect. No two physical exams will be exactly alike, but many will share some general features.
Health History A crucial element of a physical exam will include a thorough health history if the physician doesn’t already have one on file. The doctor will take time to ask questions about family history of illness, health habits, any vices (smoking, drinking alcohol, etc.), exercise schedule and diet. If there is a possible hereditary health condition running through your family, the doctor may suggest certain testing and make note of
potential signs to look for in the future.
Current Ailments After discussing a patient’s history, the doctor may ask if they are having any problems they cannot explain. These can include changes in eating or sleeping patterns; aches and pains; lumps or bumps and other abnormalities. Again, the presence of symptoms may be indicative of illness or physical changes, but not all diseases produce obvious symptoms. Vital Signs A doctor will check a patient’s vital signs during the physical. Areas the doctor will look at include but are not limited to: • Heart rate: This measures the speed at which the heart is pumping. Normal resting heart rate
values range from 60 to 100 beats per minute. • Blood pressure: A blood pressure cuff will measure systolic and diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure measures the force with which the blood is pushing through the arteries. The diastolic blood pressure is the pressure in the arteries between beats, when the heart rests. The systolic (top number) should be below 120, while the bottom should be less than 80, according to the Mayo Clinic. • Respiration rate: The doctor will measure the number of breaths taken in a minute. WebMD says between 12 and 16 breaths per minute is normal for a healthy adult. Breathing more than 20 times per minute can suggest heart or lung problems. • Pulse oximetry: Johns Hopkins School of Medicine says pulse
oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood. It is a measure of how well oxygen is being sent to the parts of your body furthest from your heart. Normal pulse oximeter readings usually range from 95 to 100 percent. Values under 90 percent are considered low. Physical Exam The examination will also include physical components. The doctor will perform a visual inspection of the skin and body for any abnormalities, such as the presence of skin cancer. The physician may feel the abdomen to check that internal organs are not distended. Females’ physical examinations may include breast and pelvic exams. Comprehensive Testing
In addition to the exam at the office, the physical may include an electrocardiogram, or EKG, to check electrical activity of the heart; blood count and cholesterol checks through bloodwork; body mass index testing; X-rays or MRIs and bone-density tests.

Nativity Project The 8th New York District Knights of Columbus recently added the Three Wise Men and the Gloria Angel to the Nativity Scene they purchased for Belmont Lake State Park last year. forum, Officer Osias conducted a PowerPoint presentation and spoke to students about becoming model citizens and the responsibilities that come with it. She urged students to make smart decisions in an increasingly unpredictable digital age,
and provided them with efficient methods to avoid online dangers. Officer Osias’ visit served as another important lesson in Robert Moses’ ongoing character education.
Eighth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park have ample opportunity to flex their creative muscles while developing team-building skills and learning to work cooperatively within a group. Mrs. Judy Keeler, veteran SSCM Middle School teacher uses a studentcentered reading strategy called Literature Circles. Student teams work together to select a book that they will read and then each student takes on a specific role in the “Lit Circle,” allowing the group to work together to analyze the story line and present their take on the piece of literature they’ve read.
Mrs. Keeler introduces the concepts to the students as 7th graders and as they become more experienced in this highly interactive and collaborative method of bringing literature to life, the students’ presentations surely gain momentum. Their sometimes heated debates and active involvement in showcasing the story line for their fellow students are clear evidence of how engaged these young adults are in the reading process, something often lacking in Middle School students today. SSCM’s Lit Circles allow young minds to think analytically about the
works they are reading. Further, for these students preparing to make their way to high school within the coming year, the process also allows them to take responsibility for their own learning and take ownership of the outcomes of their study habits and collaborative work - life skills they will take with them into their careers and use for years to come. Despite being written for only two actors, Drance incorporated

Boell; Noah Odige; Joshua Gibson; Jordan Bux; and Kriston Williams. Melissa was portrayed in different eras by Molly Battaglia; Kaitlin Meyers; Renée Agent; Amanda Zweibel; Annalise Dankenbrink; Christina Cotignola; Sofia Kachurka; and Kristina Scheid. “Love Letters” not only spotlighted students’ and staff members’ commitment to theatrical excellence, but also served as a riveting and entertaining showcase of their talents. Expert Researchers Students in Mrs. DeCarlo’s fifth-grade class at South Bay School Elementary School in the West Babylon School District have been working diligently on their group presentations about three native peoples – the Haida, the Adena Mound Builders and the Taino.
The students’ goal was to become experts on the topic they researched. They presented their reports to the class, two visiting teachers and South Bay Principal JoAnn Scott on December 15th. They were able to explain many interesting facts and details about the history,
traditions and culture of each native people and were able to answer a wide range of questions from the audience. The students designed their own presentation posters, which included illustrations, maps and drawings.
