is scheduled to come back home to the United States in early 2020. He can’t imagine leaving Sox behind because he loves her. He first saw Sox when she was a puppy, finding her caught in concertina wire in their camp. He freed her, gave her food and water, and sent her on her way. However, Sox had different plans. In the days that followed, Sox started coming back to their camp each day, feeling safe around the unit and seeking food and water. Some of the other men had even seen the dog being abused out on the streets. Soon, Sox began staying by their side all of the time, even tagging along on some of their missions. On a recent patrol, Sox ventured too far away from the unit and was whipped with a stick by a local. It was at that time that Captain Dave knew he could never leave her behind to fend for

herself. “The bond I have with Sox is something I didn’t expect, but I just can’t leave her behind,” says Captain Dave. “If I don’t bring her home with me I am afraid I’ll always regret it and wonder about what happened to her. I appreciate any assistance people can give in helping me to bring her home with me.” Relocating a dog from the Middle East to America can be done, but it comes at a high cost. Along with paying fees to allow the dog to leave, there is medical care, airfare, and other relocation expenses involved. Did You Know? Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,

Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Students Recognized For Recycling Efforts

North Babylon’s Parliament Place Elementary School fifth grader students in Ms. Staci Manning‘s class presented their Google slideshow, “The Importance of Reducing Single-Use Plastics,” to Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilmen Terence McSweeney and Tony Martinez, Director of the Town of Babylon Beautification Program Viscel Moore,

North Babylon Superintendent Glen Eschbach, and Assistant Superintendent Kim Skillen. Last month, they asked the Town of Babylon to donate recycling pails for every classroom and in two weeks’ time, they collected more than 1,600 water bottles. At the assembly, the students asked if they would donate those same pails to all the North Bab-

ylon schools and they agreed to do so. All students were presented a certificate of appreciation from the Town of Babylon for their hard work and dedication to this very important cause. Town representatives also invited the students to attend the town’s Earth Day Celebration at Town Hall in the spring.

LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR HONORED - Avid environmentalist, local business owner, and Save The Great South Bay Board Member, Karen Vaccaro Marvin, was recently honored with the 2019 South Shore Estuary Reserve (SSER) Award Stewardship for her outstanding efforts to clean the Great South Bay. Marvin is the owner of South Shore Paddle Boards in Babylon VIllage and was recognized for leading her paddle tribe on dozens of clean ups along the South Shore as well as for her STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR RECYCLING EFFORTS - Students of the North partnerships with other local organizations, such as Operation SPLASH!
