Hands on Learning The West Babylon Senior High School’s Math & Science Honor Society, National Technology Honor Society, Robotics Club and the Science Club presented the third-annual Family STEM Night on November 8th. Students in grades K-8, along with their families, were invited to the STEM event to enjoy hands-on activities including games, experiments, mini-labs and robotics demonstrations. The Math & Science Honor Society ran science
and math activities on the third floor of the high school. With close to 30 different stations, students had plenty from which to choose including activities like “Taste the Rainbow,” “Slime Time,” “Strawberry DNA” and “M&M Survival.” Brookhaven National Laboratory conducted a microscope activity and Mad Science performed dry ice experiments with small groups of students. “Be An Einstein” station let students decorate their own lab coats to wear for

With that, each holiday season is a sort of closing ceremony, if you will, a gathering together of family and friends to take stock of the year that was, with the hope that - whether good or bad - the next will be even better. This Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to spend the day with family that we seldom see, and to make new memories along the way. Over the years, traditions have come and gone, along with many beloved relatives. This void can tend to leave behind traces of sadness, of course; but the chance to gather with those who remain is a priceless one we should always be grateful for. Among the festivities,

this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.” Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire. While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family. Speaking of new traditions, this year will mark the first in quite some time that I will not be rising at 5 a.m. to see the sunrise and head out

Staff and students of the Babylon School District recently expressed their respect and gratitude toward the nation’s veterans by showing their appreciation in multiple creative and patriotic ways. Babylon Elementary School recently hosted its annual “Patriotic Singa-long,” inviting family members, distinguished guests and veterans to the school. During the event, the students performed patriotic themed songs, including “My Country,
‘Tis of Thee,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “This Land is Your Land,” for all to enjoy. Additionally, art student representatives from Babylon Junior-Senior High School, along with Babylon JuniorSenior High School art teacher Cheryl Schweider, presented Babylon Elementary School and the attending guests with their beautiful, patriotic-themed art piece titled “The Spirit of America,” which featured cascading pieces

Thriving Through The Holidays It’s that time of the year, from feasts of plenty to desserts galore, and every party and gathering in between. How do you thrive healthily through the holidays? It can seem like a lost cause. But hopefully, I can share some tips to help you succeed at your goals this season. I started my program in late October 2016 knowing I was headed into the holiday season. At first, I was tempted to wait until after the holidays, but I realized that gatherings, parties, etc. weren’t going to stop because I wanted to get healthy. I needed to find a way to make better choices to support my goals. How do you plan your lifestyle around the holiday season, and what is your ideal outcome? Let’s start by finding out your “Why.” Ask yourself: • Where do you want to be when you wake up on the morning of 1/1/18? • How do you want to feel physically and emotionally? • Why is this important to you? • What would it mean to you to be in a healthy place? • How will this impact your friends and family? Try to paint a picture so you can visually see it with your eyes and feel it with your heart.
Now that you have a goal, what is your approach going to be to achieve it? What are you willing to do to get there? If you’re not willing to do the things necessary to get what you want, then maybe you need to adjust your goal. There are 39 days left in the year as of 11/22/17; if you’re eating 6 healthy meal choices a day, that’s 234 meal choices! How many holiday meal choices may come your way that may not support your goal? Christmas? Holiday Party? Christmas Eve? New Year’s? Birthday Party? Football Games? How many opportunities will you be faced with making a choice that might not move you to your goal? Maybe 5-7 meals out of 234? If you made 229-227 healthy choices, can you imagine where you would be in your health journey? I’m excited to talk to you about your goals and how I can help you achieve them. You don’t have to use the holidays as an excuse! You can thrive this holiday season and enter 2018 with momentum! You have so many opportunities to make choices that are in line with your goals! Band Pays Tribute In observance of Veterans Day and as a testament to their respect and appreciation for the nation’s heroes, the marching band at Robert Moses Middle School in the North Babylon School
District performed at the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Under the direction of Teresa Pino, Tiina Buehler and Theresa Marchionna, the students played remarkable renditions

of patriotic songs. The performances were a symphonious way for the students to honor those who have sacrificed so much.
As an extension of their classroom studies, students enrolled in science courses at Babylon Junior-Senior High School have recently engaged in interactive realworld scenarios with the help of their teachers. Students in Kristen Dixon’s and Eric Rosasco’s earth science classes completed their first outdoor lab experience of the year, as they collaborated to make observations and inferences about the water flow and quality at Argyle Lake. In doing so, the
students reinforced skills that they will draw upon in subsequent labs this year, such as observations of physical characteristics of the lake and inferences regarding issues related to water quality. Additionally, forensics classes recently put the lessons they learned in the classroom to use as they were challenged to execute proper crime scene processing techniques to solve a mock murder in the courtyard. Under the guidance of Babylon School District Director of
Science Melissa Callahan, the students engaged in the hands-on activity while employing their critical thinking skills and deducing reasons to determine the parameters of the crime. Now in its 13th year, the school’s College Forensic Science course allows 11thand 12th-grade students to earn four college credits from Syracuse University. The course also provides students with a practical application of science as it pertains to analyzing criminal cases.

Recognizing the importance of a strong home-to-school connection, the Babylon School District Food Service Department recently held a “Parent Tasting” event at Babylon Elementary School to introduce the many current and future menu items that district students can enjoy courtesy of the
in-house chefs. “Food Service Director Nancy Pedrone and her team of chefs did an outstanding job in the preparation and presentation of sample menu items which were enjoyed by a good turnout of district parents,” said Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi.
After the tasting, an informative question and answer session was held, as the parents were able to inquire about the samples offered. Parents left the event feeling wellinformed about the healthy and delicious food being served throughout the district daily.
