After nearly three decades assisting school districts across Long Island with their auditing needs, Rhonda Meserole is moving to the other side of the desk. She is the new assistant superintendent for business and operations in the Seaford School District. Ms. Meserole, a certified public accountant, was a partner in an accounting firm that specialized in governmental auditing. She worked with villages, school districts, libraries,

fire districts and water districts as an internal and external auditor. Internal auditors analyze financial controls and perform risk assessments in all operational areas, while an external auditor opines on an entity’s financial statements. Her years as an auditor led her to work with more than two dozen school systems on Long Island, including Seaford and other neighboring districts. She learned about the operations

Experienced Accountant Is Seaford’s New Business Chief of many different departments, from academic to support services. Ms. Meserole also gained intricate knowledge about state funding and federal grants. Having worked in a family practice, Ms. Meserole said she was drawn to Seaford because it is a close-knit, familyoriented community. She also is excited to work with a caring and dedicated board of education that takes its fiscal oversight duties very seriously and to lead a hard-working and knowledgeable team within the business office. Ms. Meserole holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Hofstra University along with a master’s degree and advanced certificate in educational administration from C.W. Post (now LIU Post),

which she earned in the 1990s and “kept it in my back pocket until I found the right place.” She completed her 400-hour administrative internship in her home school district, Half Hollow Hills. In addition to managing a $73 million budget and developing future budgets, she oversees the facilities department, school food services, transportation and works closely with the district’s auditing firms. She also co-chairs the transportation committee and is a member of the COVID-19 task force for re-opening schools. “I am very excited to join the Seaford School District and experience the true meaning of ‘Seaford Pride,’” she said. “I think my experience will be an asset to the district.”

Town Clerk LaMarca Offers One-Stop Passport Services Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca reminds residents looking to obtain or renew their passports that his office is a designated Passport Acceptance Facility. “Residents can stop in and apply for their United States Passports during regular business hours at both Town Clerk offices,” said Town Clerk LaMarca. “We

offer the convenience of helping you prepare your application, and also have photo services available right in the office.” Town Clerk LaMarca stated that the requirements for applying for a passport include: • One 2x2 color photograph with a clear view of the applicant’s face against a plain

white or light colored background. The Clerk’s office provides passport photos for a fee of $10 at Town Hall North. Photo services are not available at Town Hall South. • Proof of U.S. Citizenship – Previously issued undamaged U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of

LaMarca Offers Residents Free ‘Do Not Knock’ Stickers Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca recently announced that residents who wish to deter any potential door-to-door solicitors and peddlers can obtain a free, waterproof, vinyl ‘No Soliciting’ sticker through the Town Clerk’s Office. Town Clerk LaMarca stated, “Now more than ever, our Town residents wish to remain unbothered at home by the potential nuisance of door-to-door peddlers. My office offers free ‘No Soliciting’ stickers to

homeowners as a way to set clear boundaries with anyone approaching your home looking to do unwanted business. Contact us today for a free sticker.” Town Clerk LaMarca further cautioned residents to remember a few simple guidelines to help avoid any potential pitfalls of being taken in by a fast-talking peddler or solicitor. Residents are advised to check for a current Town-issued photo identification badge prior to doing any

business with a door-todoor peddler. Photo ID issued by the Town Clerk’s Office is a good form of protection because it is issued only after an indepth background check of the individual has been made and full disclosure of the nature of their business is provided. While nonprofit organizations are not required by law to have permits, Town Clerk LaMarca has urged these organizations to inform his office about when and where their members

will be soliciting, with the information then forwarded to the local police precinct, along with the solicitor’s names. This provides residents with another way of checking any official status a solicitor may have. Voting is a privilege and a responsibility, so voters should familiarize themselves with the candidates and issues on the ballot in the weeks leading up to Election Day. In addition to national or statewide candidates and issues, voters should learn about local issues that may have a more direct impact on their daily lives. The more voters learn about the candidates and issues in advance, the more quickly they can cast their votes and get to work or return home.

Election Day gives voters throughout the United States a chance to participate in their government. The right to vote is something to cherish, as many people across the globe do not get a chance to elect the officials who govern their countries. While Election Day is an exciting time, voters may find it frustrating if they do not take steps to ensure things go smoothly when they head to the polls. The following tips can help voters prepare for Election Day. Conﬁrm your polling location. Polling locations may have changed since last year, and voters who have moved in the past 12 months may now have to vote in a new location. Voters can contact their local board of elections or visit www.Vote411.org to confirm the correct polling locations for them to cast their votes. Voters should learn the hours when the polls are open so they do not arrive too early or too late to vote. Bring photo identiﬁcation. Voter identification laws vary by state, but voters who want to avoid hassles or holdups may be able to do so by bringing current photo identification with them to the polling place. Fall Long Island Restaurant Week Wants To Be Part Of The Solution The tri-annual and award-winning Long Island Restaurant Week is changing things up. Fall Long Island Restaurant Week will take place from Sunday, October 18 through Sunday, October 25, 2020. This year, the event is all about raising money for those in need. Local independent restaurants are the backbone of our communities. We want to be part of the solution, and this Fall Long Island Restaurant Week is dedicated to raising money for two worthy organizations: the Independent Restaurant Coalition (www.saverestaurants. com), which supports restaurants and works for much needed legislative change, and Island Harvest ( w w w. i s l a n d h a r v e s t . org), which distributes millions of pounds of food through their network of community based food pantries, soup kitchens,

and emergency feeding programs. “Now more than ever, we want to make a difference for two groups in need: restaurants and those facing food insecurity,” offers Steve Haweeli, President, Long Island Restaurant and Hospitality Group which organizes the week. About Island Harvest and the IRC “Long Island Restaurant Week is an excellent way to help people on Long Island who are facing hunger and food insecurity,” states Island Harvest President, Randi Shubin Dresner. “Thanks to your generosity, we can provide essential food support to children, families, seniors and veterans who face a daily struggle of not having enough to eat.” Adds TV personality, chef and co-founder of the IRC, Andrew Zimmern, “There is no greater way for the public to support their communities than to help

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
