Make Election Day Go Smoothly Be familiar with the candidates and issues on the ballot. Voting is a privilege and a responsibility, so voters should familiarize themselves with the candidates and issues on the ballot in the weeks leading up to Election Day. In addition to national or statewide candidates and issues, voters should learn about local issues that may have a more direct impact on their daily lives. The more voters learn about the candidates and issues in advance, the more quickly they can cast their votes and get to work or return home.

Election Day gives voters throughout the United States a chance to participate in their government. The right to vote is something to cherish, as many people across the globe do not get a chance to elect the officials who govern their countries. While Election Day is an exciting time, voters may find it frustrating if they do not take steps to ensure things go smoothly when they head to the polls. The following tips can help voters prepare for Election Day. Confirm your polling location. Polling locations may have changed since last year, and voters who have moved in the past 12 months may now have to vote in a new location. Voters can contact their local board of elections or visit www.Vote411.org to confirm the correct polling locations for them to cast their votes. Voters should learn the hours when the polls are open so they do not arrive too early or too late to vote. Confirm registration. Voters can confirm that they have registered to vote by contacting their local board of elections in advance of Election Day. Sometimes voters’ names may not appear on the registration list when they arrive to vote, even if they previously registered. Poll workers can help voters who find themselves in such situations. But voters who want to avoid such hassles on Election Day can confirm their registration beforehand.

Voter identification laws vary by state, but voters who want to avoid hassles or holdups may be able to do so by bringing current photo identification with them to the polling place. While such identification is not necessarily a requirement, voters who bring along a driver’s license or state identification card may get in and out of the polling place more quickly than those who do not.

Voting on Election Day is a privilege that voters should not take lightly. Taking certain steps in the weeks ahead of Election Day can make it easier for voters to cast their ballots.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran joined with the American Cancer Society to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness month and remind Long Islanders to “Go Pink” by committing to screening, building awareness and raising funds for research and programs to support breast cancer survivors. The message is more important this year, as many breast

cancer treatments, mammograms and other cancer screenings have been impacted by COVID-19. “One in 8 women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Raising awareness about prevention is even more important this year since many people have put off routine checks and screenings because of COVID-19. Thanks to early

detection, better screening and treatment options deaths due to breast cancer are decreasing, let’s continue the progress and spread awareness and education,” said Nassau County Executive Curran. The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 40,000

will die. In Nassau County alone there are approximately 1,295 cases of breast cancer annually, and 146 deaths annually. Also, those attendance at the Breast Cancer Month kick-off included: New York State Senator Kevin Thomas, New York State Assemblyman Chuck Lavine, and Nassau County Legislators Debra Mulé, Ellen Birnbaum, Thomas McKevitt and Rose Marie

The Levittown Public Schools Board of Education held its first regular meeting since the start of the new school year on Sept. 16. With social distancing protocols in place, a limited number of community members were welcomed to attend the meeting in-person in the Levittown Memorial Board Room. The meeting was also livestreamed on YouTube. During the meeting, Todd Winch, assistant superintendent for instruction, introduced this year’s two high school student liaisons to the Levittown community. Division Avenue High School senior Jasmeet

Sahota received a warm welcome from the board, along with MacArthur High School senior Taylor Muckle, who will serve as the school’s temporary liaison as of now. Both students will attend each board meeting to report on their respective school’s events and news. Sahota is a high honor roll student who plays an active role at Division Avenue High School. He serves as the vicepresident of the math honor society and is secretary to the Division Avenue student council. Among his other leadership roles, Sahota was a student member on the district’s strategic planning

committee and a class liaison for the student council. He is also a student-athlete who has participated in varsity tennis, varsity track and field and junior varsity volleyball. Muckle is a bright student who has showcased her leadership skills as a member of the MacArthur High School art, business, Tri-M and national honor societies. This year has been anything but ordinary. The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus has proved extremely challenging especially for the hospitality industry. That has not stopped Woodloch Pines, an allinclusive family resort located in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, from forging forward however. ‘Library On Wheels’ Elementary schools throughout the East Meadow School District have been safely distributing books to students with a “library on wheels.” Frank Lukasik, the district’s director of literacy and funded programs, along with Jim Mendonis, director of social studies and 21st century learning, and district librarians, devised this plan to ensure students could continue to have access to reading. Ellen O’Neill, the librarian at George McVey Elementary School, considers this mobile asset to be vitally important. “It was priority number one to get books in the hands of as many of our students as we could,” she said. “It was a sense of normalcy for children returning to school.” Every morning, Ms. O’Neill curates a collection of books for students in grades K-5. Since students are not currently permitted to visit the library, her mode of delivery is a 70-pound cart, which she pushes around the school to visit each class.

The thoughtful selection of titles for the cart is based on such factors as grade level and interest. There are also favorite authors, series and characters. The cart returns the power of choice to students in their reading, something that is very important to the district. “Before school closures, students had multiple opportunities to shop for books in our classrooms and school libraries, but the pandemic changed all of that,” Mr. Lukasik said. “Our focus on student choice and helping kids get quality texts remains a priority.” In the COVID-19 era, an attention to cleanliness and safety was also taken into consideration when planning the distribution of books. Ms. O’Neill “quarantines” books before and after they are checked out by students. Additionally, students are required to wash and sanitize their hands before making their selection, and then must do so again before they return to their desks.

Although curating a specific and safe library cart for multiple classes is a tedious task, Ms. O’Neill recalls how one student’s reaction made it all worth it. “The first child that went up to the cart and took a book off, the smile was absolutely beautiful,” she said. “This little child was hugging the book.” Another focus of this initiative was equity of materials for students learning from home. Utilizing the Sora K-12 reading app from OverDrive, Ms. O’Neill has her remote students digitally check out the same titles she offers to her in-person students. The students who tune into class virtually are able to read along, forging a vital connection to the classroom and to reading. “The ‘library on wheels’ is an exciting part of the school day for our kids,” Mr. Lukasik said. “We continue to stress the importance of reading at home, and this provides additional access to books for our families.”
