Pencil it in. Erase it. And repeat. Such has been the state of my calendar for the last several weeks. Months, even. I’m not sure when it became so difficult to plan things. Used to be a time when you could simply pick up the phone – yes, the actual phone – and call a friend to go to dinner, a movie, the beach, whatever. Chances are, you also needed to coordinate a ride to said destination from a parental unit; but still, somehow, you made it happen. Nowadays, such outings require about 30 days advance notice – and, even at that, will most likely be
rescheduled at least three times before materializing. For some reason, the more methods of communication available, the more difficult it has become to maintain contact. Actual, personal contact. Sending a text, only to have it halfheartedly acknowledged four days later, is not quite the same as catching up over drinks. Liking a Facebook status doesn’t indicate your genuine interest in another person’s life. Face-to-face conversation does. I have always been the type of person who tries to keep in touch, the one reaching out, making plans, coordinating… And I don’t mind it, mostly. But when it feels as though it’s becoming more of a chore
than anything, well, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate. Friendships, like the communication which they are based upon, are a twoway street. Summer is a perfect season to reconnect, to socialize, to reunite with those long-lost, or perhaps just slightly lapsed, acquaintances. School is out, work schedules tend to be more lax, vacations are planned… and more often than not, it winds up being worth the wait. If only it could be written in ink from day one. Prior to the end of the school year, the Syosset Central School District honored its silver anniversary staff members along with its retirees during the annual District Reception held in the Syosset High School gymnasium. Each honoree was introduced by a close colleague, who shared kind words regarding the individual’s past service and dedication to the district. Introductions were followed by a certificate presentation by
a member of the board of education. This year’s group of retirees includes Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Streitman, who was introduced by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers and Board of Education President Michael Cohen, both of who lauded Streitman for helping the district through the leadership transition of a few years ago. “When you think about our district and the collection of wonderful
educators and support staff we have here in Syosset, everyone has been hired by Dr. Streitman,” said Dr. Rogers. “We are very thankful for the kindness and intelligence he has brought to the many aspects of the position, but this is undoubtedly will be his greatest legacy.” The district also said farewell to another key member of the administrative team, Theresa Scrocco, who has served as South Grove Elementary School principal since 2009.

On July 16th, at the Garden City Hotel’s Polo Lounge, Taylor Yaeger of Dix Hills was crowned Miss Long Island® Teen 2017 and Ashley Edwards of West Hempstead was crowned Miss Long Island 2017. Both Queens will travel Long Island promoting their platforms and will volunteer with various non-profit organizations. Yaeger will be promoting
her platform of Autism Awareness and Edwards of Cancer Awareness. Senior Citizen Prom Prior to the end of the school year, Syosset High School’s Future Leaders of America Club recently hosted a Senior Citizen Prom in the school’s main gymnasium, welcoming approximately 200 senior citizen guests from the Woodbury-Syosset community, including more than 50 residents from the nearby Cold Spring Hills Center for Health and Rehabilitation. Syosset High School’s Jazz Band and girls a cappella group, The Adelettes, provided live
entertainment early on, with swing, line and other styles of dance taking place on the gym floor throughout the day. Students served a catered meal, including a delicious dessert they prepared. This year’s theme was Safari, so the gymnasium was decorated like a jungle with many of the students adorning safari hats. There was also an exhibit of student artwork for viewing. According to FLAC President Alyssa Casale, members have been
fundraising throughout the year to make the Senior Citizen Prom possible. “It’s not every day that the senior citizens have the opportunity to sit down and talk with young people like us, so it’s great that they can learn a little bit about our generation and we get to learn a lot from them,” said Alyssa. “We enjoy the interaction.” Joanne Leonardi and Susan Occhiuto are Syosset High School’s FLAC co-advisers.
Court of Honor Presiding Officer Norma L. Gonsalves attended Boy Scout Troop 577’s Eagle Court of Honor for Eagle Scout James P. Medici at St. Frances de Chantal School in Wantagh. For his project, James, a resident of Bellmore, improved a building
in parking field eight, Eisenhower Park, East Meadow. The finished project consisted of the construction of a large set of bookcases and painting the men’s dressing room, existing freestanding shelves, along with a vestibule area.
James was also able to clean out a pantry area which contained expired items and removed rubbish out of a large attic. The Town of Hempstead uses this building to run programs that help the community.

Twenty-nine young ladies were honored at the ceremony for Gold, Silver, Bronze and Presidential Awards. Of the 29 who
received awards, three had earned the Girl Scout’s Gold Award, one earned the Girl Scout’s Silver Award and 25 earned the Girl Scout’s Bronze Award. The 29 young ladies as well as nine adults had also received Presidential Volunteer Service Awards. “It’s great to see these young ladies achieve success in their troop,”
said Presiding Officer Gonsalves. “Their hard work and dedication is something we should all applaud.” “I’m happy to see such a large group being recognized for their achievements,” said Legislator Rhoads. “They have set a great example for Girl Scouts everywhere.”

The YMCA of Long Island (YMCA-LI) is ready to welcome the spirit of the Summer Olympics, which are set to kickoff this August in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The YMCA-LI announced today, beginning Thursday, July 21st and running through Sunday, August 21st, all local branches will participate in an island-wide Road to the Olympics. The campaign will celebrate the multiple sports and activities offered at the Y in the tradition of the Olympic Games. Additionally, the campaign will celebrate the spirit of building local athletes of all ages, levels and abilities at YMCA-LI facilities, from improving skills and coordination to developing positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork. The monthlong event invites YMCA members to share their fitness milestones and achievements with @ ymcali “#YLIolymPICS” on social media. “Our island-wide YMCA community encompasses a wide range of athletes, all of whom are winners in their own way! Whether they celebrate running a half-mile further or try a new group exercise class, these are moments they should challenge and celebrate successes,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island. “Through this campaign, we want to encourage all of our members to share their milestones with us so we can share in the joy of health and wellness.” In hopes of encouraging Y members to reach and share their fitness goals, the month-long event will culminate with a special raffle opportunity. YES Community Counseling Center is seeking golf enthusiasts and community-minded individuals to volunteer at the upcoming Barclays golf event, which will be conducted at the Bethpage Golf Course from August 23rd through 28th, 2016. YES will be responsible for providing 35 volunteers each day at the 12th Green concession
booth. For every shift you volunteer to work, you receive a pass to watch the tournament on that same day. Event updates will be posted on their Facebook page. Why And How To Get A Better Night’s Sleep (NAPSI)—If you ever find yourself lying awake at night, you’re not alone— even if no one else is in the room. That’s because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-quarter of the U.S. population reports occasionally not getting enough sleep, while nearly 10 percent experience chronic insomnia. Why To Sleep Good sleep, says the CDC, can decrease the risk of sickness and weight
gain. It helps you think more clearly, decreases stress, and leaves you more energetic and productive. As these qualities improve, relationships tend to improve, too. Lack of sleep can be a problem on the job, too. A study by the Law Enforcement Survival Institute showed that in a computer simulated shoot/don’t shoot situation, fatigued police officers were more likely to shoot when not necessary.
What To Do Many sleep specialists recommend these four steps: 1. Don’t drink caffeine late in the day. 2. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark and relaxing environment; neither too hot nor too cold. 3. Make sure your bed is comfortable and don’t use it for reading, watching TV or listening to music. 4. Take a bath before bedtime.

Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what
you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive.
