Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine, Camp Sunshine (www.campsunshine.org) offers children with lifethreatening illnesses and their families a place to relax together for a week and to take a break from the extraordinary demands placed on them on a daily basis. The year-round program is free of charge and staffed almost entirely by volunteers. It is the only program in the nation whose mission is to address the impact of a life-threatening illness on every member of the immediate family. Since the opening of the Camp’s year-round campus in 2001, more ill children and their families have come from New York than any other state in the nation. In 2013, 152 families from New York attended the Camp. Even with multiple sessions being added annually at Camp Sunshine, there are still many more children from New York being newly diagnosed each year, Smith said.
Camp Sunshine’s program continues to be recommended by the following New York treatment centers: Mount Sinai Medical Center, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Schneider’s Children’s Hospital, Children’s

Commencement Celebration Stony Brook University held its 17th Annual December commencement ceremony today in the newly renovated Island Federal Credit Union Arena, where 1,571 students had their degrees conferred. The new graduates, which range in age from 20–77, joined approximately 150,000 of their predecessors around the globe whose lives and work personify the Stony Brook University mission. During his commencement address, Stony Brook University President Samuel L.
Stanley Jr., M.D., spoke about the tradition of graduation, the increasing value of a Stony Brook degree, and reinforced the competitive advantages and opportunities that Stony Brook graduates will have as they enter new chapters in their lives. “Recently some have questioned the value of a college degree, have stated that a college education may not be worth its cost. Let me make it very clear. Your investment in your Stony Brook degree will be one of the best investments you (and your family) ever
made,” said President Stanley. “In addition to earning higher wages,” he continued, “college graduates are more likely to find jobs than those who didn’t attend college. Your decision to attend and receive a degree from Stony Brook University means you are on a path towards a better life, and I congratulate you on that choice and your future.” President Stanley also encouraged students to keep in touch with mentors and professors who helped graduates achieve
academic success. He urged students not to “lose these valued mentors, as they can continue to play an important role in your life, a wonderful source for counsel, free advice, and those ever so important recommendations.” He continued to reassure graduates that “wherever in the world you end up, know that we are proud of you, and that you will always have a home at Stony Brook University.” At the ceremony, remarks were also delivered by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-
NY) and student speaker, Danielle DeSantis, who received a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology. DeSantis, selected by a committee of staff and faculty from a pool of submitted speeches provided through the annual senior speaker competition, shared her thoughts about her years as a Seawolf and offered the following advice to her fellow graduates: “…Go find your mountain! Go see what’s beyond this wave of life, and howl to the world ‘I am a Seawolf!’ … Stony Brook gave us our sea, and now
we need to take the reins into our own hands and see what is past the waves of college.“ Next month, DesSantis will begin classes toward the pursuit of a Master of Arts degree in Higher Education Administration at Stony Brook University. Christmas celebrants realize that the holiday season does not end on December 26th or even January 2nd. For many people, Christmas and New Year’s Eve are merely a prelude to the real celebration to come on Three Kings Day. Three Kings Day, or Día de los Très Reyes, is celebrated on January 6th to honor the wise men who visited and brought gifts to Jesus Christ. Also known as the Epiphany, the holiday marks the end of the Christmas season for many practicing Christians. Very little is known about the kings, or magi. These kings, who are only mentioned once in the Gospel of Matthew, are never named. The story says they hail from the “east” and are guided to the manger by a mysterious light in the sky. County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by Congressman-elect Lee Zeldin, Legislator Bill Lindsay III, Legislator Tom Muratore, the Suffolk County Veteran Services Agency and family members of veterans lost to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at the Farmingville VFW Post 400 today to announce a veteran support outreach effort in response to the rise in PTSD related suicides around the region. County officials encouraged veterans affected by PTSD to enroll in their local PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Project support groups. “There is no greater obligation we have than to make sure the men and women of our armed forces have the support and services they require when they come back home,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “PTSD related suicide is an American tragedy and we need to do more to help our veterans work through the challenges they face.” The Joseph P. Dwyer
Peer to Peer program is overseen by the Suffolk County Veteran’s Service Agency and is designed to serve veterans, active duty, reserve and National Guard troops suffering from PTSD and allows veterans the opportunity to share and discuss their issues and problems with trained veteran personnel in a secure and anonymous setting. The unique nature of the program is that veterans are serving as the facilitators of the groups which provides a comfort and familiarity level to those veterans seeking assistance. Since its inception in 2012, over 2,000 veterans have participated in the Joseph P. Dwyer Project where they share their experiences with fellow veterans and allow the healing process to begin. As part of the outreach effort, the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency issued an informational pamphlet on the Joseph P. Dwyer Project to veteran households throughout the

She is the nurse manager of the hospital’s intensive care unit. Jordan supports nurse hand-off communication at the bedside, fostering patient and family education and has worked hard to establish a culture of safety. In addition to her leadership skills, Jordan’s clinical achievements are notable. Under her guidance, her unit achieved the Gold Level Beacon Award in Critical Care
to families in Jamaica, West Indies who cannot afford health care, she traveled there to lend nursing expertise and to live the CHS mission to “advocate for the poor and underserved.” Jordan lives in Hempstead with her husband, Denroy Morris. The other leading finalist for this notable honor is New Hyde Park resident Mary Ellen Conrad, director of the Nassau Day Programs and Supported Housing, from Maryhaven Center of Hope, Port Jefferson. For more than 30 years, she has been a proponent of the CHS mission, developing, implementing and sustaining one of the largest mental health service delivery systems in Nassau County. Her career began when there was little funding to operate programs, so she had to creatively staff and run with both quality and efficiency. Having identified a need for residences for those with a mental health diagnosis as well as an intellectual or developmental disability, she presented the idea to administration. Each year, Catholic Health Services (CHS) seeks nominations from its staff for the Patrick J. Scollard Award for Leadership. This year’s winner of CHS’s highest honor is Richard C. Bie, licensed professional engineer and assistant vice president, plant engineering for Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, West Islip. Chosen from among colleagues across CHS, he was recognized at the system’s 11th annual leadership conference, held at the DeMatteis Center in Greenvale. “Richard’s commitment to Catholic Health Service’s mission is apparent in both word and deed,” said CHS President and Chief Executive Officer Alan D. Guerci, MD. “He is dedicated to assuring that those who seek care are provided the best possible environment.” Bie has spent the better part of his career applying his unique skills and talents to the health care industry, including the last five years with Good Samaritan.There, he implemented energy efficiency processes throughout the hospital such as operational changes to shut off equipment during unoccupied hours, a house-wide steam trap maintenance and repair program, expansion of a central chilled water distribution system, and replacement of older lighting within the main hospital and off-sites with newer, more efficient LED lighting. Saving more money is a popular New Year’s resolution, and now men and women looking to save more can employ technology to help them realize their financial goals. If your goal for the coming year is to save ‘X’ amount of dollars, sit down and calculate how much you need to save each pay period to realize that goal. You can then have that figure automatically deposited into an interestbearing savings account each time your paycheck is deposited into your account. • Enlist a friend. If your

For example, men and women who want to find more time to exercise in the coming year can enlist a friend or family member to exercise with them. The buddy system is a great motivating tool, and enlisting the help of a friend or family member provides the added benefit of seeing that loved one more often in the year ahead. • Don’t let setbacks derail your resolution. Resolutions too often fall by the wayside when men and women experience setbacks directly related to their resolutions. If you resolved to save more money but had a month when that simply was not possible, don’t allow that to derail your resolution for the rest of the year. Setbacks are nearly inevitable, but they’re never an excuse to give up on a resolution.
