Plainview Water District Encourages Residents to ‘Adopt-A-Hydrant’
As the Plainview community prepares for snow in the forecast as we jump into the colder months, the Plainview Water District (PWD) would like to remind its residents about the importance of keeping fire hydrants clear. Ensuring hydrants remain free of snow and any other winter debris can save first responders valuable time during their response to an emergency situation. “The winter weather arriving always provides us with an opportunity to remind our residents and local business owners of the importance of keeping hydrants clear,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind. “Making sure the fire department has quick and easy access to fire hydrants at all times saves precious moments that should be used to responding to an emergency.” Residents can “adopt” a nearby fire hydrant to pledge responsibility for reporting issues and making sure it kept clear
during snowstorms. Clearing approximately three feet around the hydrant will provide both firefighters with uninterrupted access in case of a potential emergency. This provides plenty of room for the emergency personnel to operate the device as well as locate it. “You never know when or where an emergency is going to occur so never assume that they fire hydrant in front of your home won’t be needed,” said PWD Commissioner Andrew Bader. “We also encourage residents to never assume someone else will clear the hydrant so please communicate with your neighbors to ensure it is cleared in a timely fashion.” In addition, the Plainview Water District asks residents to also consider assisting neighbors, family members and friends who are unable to clear their own fire hydrants without assistance. All grade levels took part in the Acts of Kindness Elf Contest. Students chose an elf to color and decorate, while writing an act of kindness on the front. A winner was chosen at each grade level for
their design and message. The winning elves will be displayed on the school’s “Giving Tree” located in the main lobby. Winners also chose a stuffed animal from the tree to take home. The Bethpage Union Free School District’s Board of Education adopted a resolution at its Dec. 15 meeting to present a taxneutral bond proposal to the greater community for vote on Tuesday, Feb. 9. The proposal calls for various infrastructure improvements throughout the district that were identified in the district’s five-year building condition survey. These include repairs to parking lots, sidewalks and flooring, as well as improvements to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. A number of academic enhancements are also included in the proposal to continue the district’s expansion of innovative learning spaces for students. The proposal also calls for the addition of two STEM labs at JFK Middle School, which is the progression of earlier work done to improve STEM labs at the elementary level completed in a previous capital improvement
project. Libraries at Bethpage High School, JFK Middle School, Central Boulevard Elementary School and Charles Campagne Elementary School would be renovated to include state-of-the-art pilot classrooms. A variety of IT upgrades will also be completed, including refreshing SMART Boards throughout the district and improving cybersecurity. In addition, the proposal includes a number of athletic upgrades, including the renovation of the JFK athletic complex to include a multisport turf field with track and field events, as well as lighting to support evening use for practices. The renovated JFK athletic complex also includes basketball court improvements and the repositioning of the softball and baseball fields with turf infields. The turf field and scoreboard at Bethpage High School would also be replaced. The cost of the proposed

Bethpage BOE Adopts Bond Resolution Bethpage Students Join Elite For School Facility Improvements; Scholars From Across The Country Five Bethpage UFSD Brooke Greenstein, Instructional Programs. Vote Set For Tuesday, Feb. 9 students, all of whom who is studying Horse “Barry Tech students have bond that will be presented to voters is approximately $16.2 million. Planning for a capital project now will result in a tax neutral bond, as any new payments for the proposed work would replace expiring debt payments. Therefore, no new tax revenue would be needed to support bond payments. There would be no additional tax impact if approved. The district will host a virtual community forum on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. to provide an overview of the proposal. Information on how to join the forum will be posted to the district’s website, www. bethpagecommunity.com, prior to the meeting. More detailed information on the proposal will be posted to the district’s website and will be sent to residents in the coming months. “The Board of Education and I look forward to sharing more information about the tax-neutral bond proposal with our community,” said Superintendent of Schools David Schneider. “I strongly believe that the balance of academic, athletic and basic infrastructure improvements will benefit current and future generations of Bethpage students.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Lou Imbroto and Town Clerk Richard LaMarca recently joined with The Nature Conservancy, Pew Charitable Trusts, and Friends of the Bay to provide an early holiday gift to Mother Nature as 50,000+ surplus commercially-grown oysters were entered into the harbor. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the shuttering of local restaurants for long periods of time, commercial oyster growers have been faced with a larger than normal surplus of mature oysters. Rather than discard these perfectly healthy bivalves,
they will be placed in protected areas of Oyster Bay Harbor, where they will help naturally clean and filter local waterways while spawning additional shellfish to help build back the depleted Oyster population. “Rather than land on dinner plates, these oysters are headed into the harbor due to the lack of demand at local restaurants during this public health pandemic,” said Supervisor Saladino. “By placing these oysters in protected areas of the harbor, we strengthen the resiliency of our waterways and boost shellfish reproduction. These oysters will also help to naturally absorb
wave action for shoreline stabilization while cleaning and filtering local waterways and spawning additional shellfish to help build back the depleted the oyster population.” This project partners the Town with the Pew Charitable Trust and the Nature Conservancy as part of their Supporting Oyster Aquaculture and Restoration (SOAR) Project. Under this initiative, more than 100 shellfish companies will be supported during these tough times, and over 200 critical shellfish farming jobs will be preserved across the country, all while simultaneously

29 Syosset High School Students Selected for NYSSMA All-State Twenty-nine Syosset High School studentmusicians were selected as 2020 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All State musicians. Five of the students were selected for multiple instruments. Additionally, senior Michael Kopacz was selected as an Alternate to the NAfME All-National Chorus. The students are part of an elite group of approximately 900 student-musicians chosen from schools all over the state. Typically the AllState ensembles would perform in concert during the annual NYSSMA AllState Festival and Winter Conference. This year’s festival and conference was cancelled to ensure the health and safety of students and has been moved to a virtual Cyber Summit format that will take place December 3-5, 2020.
