Long Island Authors’ Circle A group of published Long Island writers has formed an organization to be known as the “Long Island Authors’ Circle.” The newly established ‘LIAC’ is currently composed of six charter members who have been published individually in virtually every fiction and non-fiction genre; from poetry and drama, to journalism and novels. The core group consists of four women and two men who hail from St. James, Northport, Dix Hills, Massapequa Park, and Smithtown. Their varied backgrounds include: Town Councilwoman, Newspaper Publisher, College Professor, Literary Critic, Businessman, and

My First Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan ‘Twas the night of Christmas and all the humans have gone home, saddled with packages of presents and leftovers and happy memories of the past two days’ festivities. Me, I’m feverishly swimming laps around my bowl in a desperate attempt to work off the calories from my (multiple) meals and avoid this holiday weight gain I keep hearing so much about. I have to admit, I didn’t understand what the fuss over “Christmas” was all about. All I can say is my human never stopped running to and fro in the weeks leading up to the occasion. Every time she came home – late, I might add, resulting in my dinner being delayed yet again (insert impatient fin tapping here) – she would be carrying all sorts of bags, some filled with food, others with gifts, wrapping paper, greeting cards…

I decided I had better get something to show my appreciation for the great hospitality she has shown me over these last 10 and a half months. I had the human’s mommy pick out an oversized Snoopy stuffed animal, since I’ve noticed all sorts of plush toys around the apartment. The gift card read: To My Dearest Human, Jamie… Love, Your Buddy xoxo And people say I don’t show any gratitude! Me, I made out on the deal pretty well too. I received another gift card in my own personalized mini-stocking, along with a front row seat to Christmas Eve dinner, brunch the following morning and the unwrapping of the presents on Christmas Day. They even decorated my bowl with some flashy red and green bows that I mistook for fellow fishy friends. How exciting! My human has promised me

a proper shopping spree after the new year, and I can’t wait. Although, I must say, I’m fairly low-maintenance as pets go. No fancy castles and shrubbery needed for me – just me and my plant, a generous helping of flakes and maybe a weekly bath to freshen my bowl. Oh, and plenty of humanly love and attention, which I receive in spades. All in all, I am one happy betta. This Christmas thing was pretty exciting, and I hear there are more festivities scheduled for later in the week when a large glittering ball drops from the top of a building. Hopefully I’ll get a front row seat on the coffee table to witness that spectacle! Thanks again to all my readers – your support and fan mail means the world to my little finned self. Happy New Year… I’ll see ya on the flip side!

Purpose of the Authors’ Circle is the exchange of information and ideas valuable to members in the execution and furtherance of their respective writing crafts. Communication is conducted primarily via email, though physical meetings are held when proposed and unanimously agreed to by the charter participants. Each of the core members may sponsor new Long Island candidates for membership if they have been published. When unanimously approved, nominees are invited to join the organization. The “Long Island Authors’ Circle” has no mandatory meetings or dues; no officers, committees, or elections; no by-laws ... and participation in the group’s activities is at all times strictly voluntary.

“We’re sort of like the free-and-easy ‘Algonquin Round Table’ established by Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and company,” said celebrity biographer, Richard Grudens, and poet-dramatist-novelist, Charlene Knadle, agreed. “This sort of ‘loosely structured’ group is often the most successful,” she noted. Journalist, Pat Biancaniello, pointed out that “… with the availability of modern electronic communications, a productive ‘meeting’ can be conducted in minutes, where once it would require hours, or days.” The author of eleven novels, member Jeb Ladouceur, said that he has resisted joining organizations demanding time that he might otherwise devote to writing in his Smithtown study, and author Dina Santorelli was quick to agree. “The time seems right for an

association like this,” she said. Two teams of juniors and seniors from Syosset High School recently participated in the North Shore-LIJ SPARK! Challenge. The program is designed to “spark” interest in all STEM-related fields in health care, demonstrating to students how health care goes beyond doctors and extends into various fields. One team of 10 students visited North Shore-LIJ Project Access at the Huntington Quadrangle, focusing

on the business side of health care, specifically data processing. A second team of 15 students spent the day at North ShoreLIJ Syosset Hospital in the orthopedic perioperative unit, where they learned about all aspects of orthopedic surgeries, ranging from imaging, preoperative care and surgery procedure to casting and post-operative care. During the next few months, the student teams, encouraged by teachers Veronica Ade,

Diane Malley, Melanie Rodenburgh and guidance counselor Jennifer Saia, will complete the challenge by creating career advertisements and a video about what they learned from their day at North Shore-LIJ Project Access and Syosset Hospital, respectively. The challenge concludes in April, when the students will present their projects to a panel of LIJ judges who will select winners.

As part of a classroom activity, students at Hicksville High School created knock hockey tables to donate to various charities and hospitals this holiday season. The students, who built 22

tables in Catherine Temps’ World of Technology classes, completed the project as a supplement to their lessons on mass production. The tables were donated to Cohen Children’s

Medical Center in New Hyde Park, the Sarah Grace Foundation for Children with Cancer, Inc., the Bethany House “Adopt-A-Family” program and the Hicksville United Methodist Church.

Sweet Lessons constructing gingerbread houses. The students used milk cartons, frosting and fluff to stick together gingerbread pieces, and decorated with graham crackers and assorted candy. As part of the students’ English Language Arts unit on fairytales, teachers read students different variations of the “The Gingerbread Man” story including Gingerbread Friends, The Gingerbread

Man Loose in the School and The Gingerbread Boy. The creation of gingerbread houses allowed students to celebrate the culmination of this unit, celebrate the holiday season and exercise their critical thinking. Students had to figure out the best way to construct a sturdy house in addition to creatively design and decorate their houses.

Hicksville Public School District hosted a wellattended Parent-Student University (PSU), a series of informative workshops for parents and siblings of students learning English as a new language held at Hicksville High School. The PSU was comprised of four to six workshops, the focus of which were to have parents and guardians understand the structure of American middle- and high-school, including report cards, working with guidance counselors and interacting with staff members. Families were invited to the event through presentations in all ENL classrooms conducted by ENL teachers, in addition to letters sent home in

Spanish and English and automated calls to homes. As families arrived to the PSU, student volunteers were prepared to translate for and communicate with them in various languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Albanian, Bengali, Farsi, Vietnamese, Pushto, Chinese, Punjabi and Spanish. Parents enjoyed dinner, which had been partially donated by the Hicksville Council of Principals, Assistant Principals, Supervisors and Department Chairs, and was served to them by the student volunteers. The high school’s lobby area was transformed into a dining hall with red poinsettia centerpieces at each table for the event. Workshops took place

throughout the school, including a combined homework help/gameplaying/book-reading session hosted by Advanced Placement Spanish students. In addition, a Planning for Your Future presentation was held in the auditorium in Spanish, as well as a Power Point presentation in English in the orchestra room. The goal of the PSU was to foster communication and provide valuable information to ENL families while making them feel comfortable. The next PSU will be held on January 21st. Grant Support North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center is pleased to announce that the WE CARE Fund of the Nassau Bar Association Inc. has made a grant of $2,500 to support the Children’s Center at Nassau County Family Court, operated by the Guidance Center. The Children’s Center is a safe haven for children and a respite for parents who need to appear in court. The Children’s Center offers short-term childcare in a supervised, secure and nurturing environment for children from infancy to 12 years of age. Approximately 1,800 children participate yearly. “We are very grateful to the WE CARE Fund for

stepping in to help children while their parents are taking care of court business,” said Andrew Malekoff, Executive Director and CEO of the Guidance Center. “Being in a unfamiliar environment such as the courthouse can be frightening for children, but the Children’s Center is a beautifully equipped facility with nurturing caregivers that allows the youngsters to feel at ease plus every child in our care is sent home with a book each day.” The WE CARE Fund is the nationally recognized charitable arm of the Nassau County Bar Association. Founded in 1988, WE CARE

funds are raised by the legal profession and the community at large. The money is distributed through charitable grants to improve the quality of life for children, the elderly and others in need throughout Nassau County. Nurtured by the tireless efforts of lawyers and judges, the WE CARE program has matured into a nationally recognized model for similar programs instituted by other bar groups.
