Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced that the Parks Department will begin to offer a night fishing parking permit to nonresidents, effective January 1, 2020. In order to obtain the permit, a non-resident must be sponsored by a current Town resident who has already obtained a night fishing permit. Fees Waived for Cat and Dog Adoptions Through December Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announce that the Town’s Animal Shelter will waive adoption fees for pets for the remainder of the year. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Residents interested in making this a ‘purr-fect’ holiday season can adopt cats or dogs free of charge at our shelter throughout the month of December. Our dedicated shelter staff is ready to assist residents find the
right companion for their family.” Through December 31st, general adoption fees of $84 per pet will be waived. All usual adoption services will be provided, including the spaying or neutering of the animal, vaccination and microchipping. “Our animal shelter has a wonderful reputation of providing great care to the pets temporarily housed there while waiting for their new homes,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Come on down to
make a new ‘fur-ever’ friend this holiday season.” The Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter is located at 150 Miller Place in Syosset. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Bethpage Promotes Career Readiness Members of the Bethpage School District community gathered at the Nov. 26 board of education meeting to discuss the importance of career readiness and hear from Bethpage students partaking in BOCES vocational programs. Students in grades 11 and 12 are able to spend half their day at Bethpage High School and the other half at one of three vocational centers: Barry Tech, Long Island High School for the Arts, or Gerald R. Claps Career & Technical Center. Thomas Kenny, director of guidance for grades K-12, spoke on the importance of career readiness at every level and students’ capability of choosing their career path based on individual interests and abilities. “The goal is to find students an umbrella or cluster of career interests and skills,” said Kenny. Nationally, 77% of high school students are thinking about their careers but only 17% cite their high school experiences as factors on career thinking. BHS has seen an increase in students participating in
vocational programs each year since 2015 and believes in promoting awareness at the elementary, middle and high school levels. BOCES programs are all taught by individuals who have worked or specialized in their specified coursework. Whether they choose to pursue a career in their vocational program area or not, the work habits, responsible behaviors and decisionmaking skills students learn will prepare them for the workforce. Current high school students were in attendance to speak on their experience in various BOCES vocational programs. They were: Melissa Diers, Long Island School for the Arts; Alex Dupre and Ciara McGlynn, veterinary science; George Hambrock, physical therapy aide; Bridget Michie, nurse assisting; and Ramon Polanco, exercise science and personal training, Each of them stressed how prepared they feel for their careers thanks to the BOCES programs, reiterating how valuable it is to be able to learn in a workforce-like
environment outside school halls. “BOCES is a great way to really get out there and see what you want to do,” said Alex Dupre. As a testament to the BOCES program and the success which students can attain, BHS Class of 2014 graduate Nick Panella spoke on his experience. Now an NYPD officer in Queens, Panella completed the criminal justice and political science BOCES program during his junior and senior years. He credits BOCES with his success and ability to find a career he could excel in. Mike Spence, assistant superintendent for instruction, further stressed the impact on students who choose to invest in their futures by participating in BOCES programs. “They gave something a shot because they were intrigued by it, and that has altered who they will now become and where they’re going to go,” said Spence. “I think that’s a powerful thing about this. These programs can change how they look at their lives and future.”

Heart-Healthy Tips For The Holiday Season The holidays are a time for celebrating with family and friends, but often stress inhibits our abilities to enjoy the holiday season. From shopping to cooking to events, we are often packing our schedules while forgetting about our health. A report in the Journal of the American Heart Association noted that heart-related deaths spike during Christmas. While more research is needed to pinpoint the exact reason, researchers suggest that emotional stress, changes in diet and alcohol consumption, less staff at medical facilities and changes in physical environment (i.e. visiting relatives), could play a role in the spike in deaths. In order to protect your heart and enjoy more holidays with your loved ones, follow these tips to stay healthy and happy this season: Maintain healthy habits. Even though our schedules change during the holidays because of travel and events, it’s important to maintain regular healthy habits. For instance, eating healthy, balanced meals, moving more every day, and getting at least seven hours of sleep each night. Beware of party perils. Special holiday events could mean extra helpings of not-sohealthy meals. Try eating a healthy snack, such as a big salad or vegetable soup, before a party to avoid overindulging later. If you’re hosting or bringing a dish, offer healthier options using American Heart Association recipes and cooking tips found at recipes.heart.org. Give yourself the gift
of peace. It’s okay to say no to invitations when you have too much going on. If you start to feel overwhelmed, recharge by doing something that relaxes you, such as yoga, meditation or going for a brisk walk. Make a plan for the New Year. When all the parties are over, the winter blues set in. Instead of feeling down, challenge yourself with realistic, sustainable goals for a healthy, happy New Year! For example, start a walking routine and sign up for your local Heart Walk to stick to your goals. While avoiding stress and making good choices can help prevent heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers, it’s still important to know what to do if you or a loved one experiences the signs and symptoms of heart attack, stroke or cardiac arrest. The Journal report noted that patients hold back in seeking medical care during the holiday season, which could also explain the spike in deaths. If you or a loved one experiences the warning signs of heart attack, stroke or cardiac arrest, don’t delay, call 9-1-1 immediately. Heart Attack Warning Signs: Discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. Discomfort in other areas of the upper body, including pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. Shortness of breath,
with or without chest discomfort. Other signs may include breaking out into a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. Call 9-1-1 immediately if experiencing any of these symptoms. Stroke Warning Signs: Face Drooping. Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Arm Weakness. Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Speech Difficulty. Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “the sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly? Time to Call 9-1-1. If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get them to the hospital immediately. Cardiac Arrest Warning Signs: Sudden loss of responsiveness. The person does not respond to tapping on shoulders. No normal breathing. The victim does not take a normal breath when you tilt the head up and check for at least five second. Call 9-1-1 immediately and start hands-only CPR by pressing hard and fast in the center of the chest. 7 Ways Newspapers Benefit Students Classrooms have come a long way since the days when pioneering settlers would send their children to single-room schoolhouses. Modern classrooms might be technical marvels, but one less flashy learning tool remains as valuable as ever. Newspapers might not be as glamorous as tablets or other gadgets, but they are still an invaluable resource to educators and students. The following are seven ways in which newspapers in the classroom can benefit students. 1. Newspapers build vocabulary. Numerous studies have found that reading can improve youngsters’ vocabulary.
