The cold winter months are upon us and the Plainview Water District would like to provide residents with some helpful tips to prepare their homes’ water system. When exposed to cold weather, water systems that are not properly prepared or winterized can be subject to breaks and/or leaks. Residents are encouraged to utilize these tips to protect their homes from any damage or disruptions caused by frozen pipes. “Preparing your home’s water system for the colder weather is very simple, but failing to take these steps can cause problems down the road,” said Chairman Marc Laykind. “We ask everyone in the District to use this information as a guide to avoid a big and unnecessary frustration that frozen pipes can cause.”
Outdoor Water Systems: Don’t forget to turn off those hose spigots from inside the house and leave the outside valves open to prevent freezing. This allows any trapped water to expand in freezing temperatures, preventing the pipe from bursting. Disconnect and drain all hoses and keep in a warm, dry place for reuse in the spring. Sprinkler Systems: Sprinkler systems should be winterized to prevent possible leaks and damage to the system. Leaks in sprinkler systems caused by burst pipes can be hard to identify when the systems return back on line, leading to increased water usage and decreased functionality. Indoor Maintenance: If a customer’s water service is in the boiler room or basement, check the area for broken windows
or drafts. Brisk winds and freezing temperatures can cause pipes and water meters to freeze or break. In preparation, locate the main water shutoff valve in your home in case of an emergency and make sure pipes in unheated areas— like crawl spaces—are properly insulated. It is also advised that all customers clearly label the main water shutoff valve in their home so they are prepared in the event of a water leak emergency. Shutoff valves are typically located where the water service enters the house through the foundation. Water Lines Leading to Unheated Structures: Be sure to shut off and drain service lines leading to any unheated structures until spring to prevent breaks. If you have questions

Prepare Your Families Gather for Blessing of Christmas Home’s Water Trees and Ornaments at System Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island Chapels Continued From 3 Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island recently held a week-long series of Christmas Tree and Christmas Ornament blessing services at three of its Cemeteries, Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram and Queen of All Saints Cemetery in Central Islip. Annually Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island has offered special Christmas Ornament Masses at its Chapels. These events always had hundreds of people attending and bringing Christmas ornaments to be blessed. With the pandemic came the need for new safety measures to be incorporated into the Christmas traditions that give peace and joy to thousands of families. social distancing mandates, the special Christmas Trees and Ornament Blessing services were offered as an alternative to Christmas Masses. “This has been a challenging year for everyone and at Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island, it was very important to us that we offer families options to honor and remember their lost loved ones. The Christmas Tree and Ornament blessing services took place all week long and were celebrated by our Committal Deacons. We were pleased that these services were well attended,” said Richard Bie, CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. Dozens of families attended services and brought favorite Christmas decorations and special ornaments as tributes to family members who passed during the last year and in previous years. Many ornaments were handmade and others included photos of those who have passed. Following the blessings of the Christmas Trees, families were invited to place these special momentos in remembrance of their loved ones on the trees. “The Christmas Trees decorated with these special ornaments are beautiful and a fitting way for families to pay tribute to their loved ones and remember the lives of those who have passed. We received many positive responses from families about our tree and ornament blessing services. Christmas celebrations are among the most well attended at the cemeteries, so we look forward to offering families a meaningful way to remember their loved ones again next year,” added Ann Andersen, Associate Director of Administration and Customer Sales and Service at Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. Ms. Andersen and staff helped to plan and prepare
the chapels for services and attended them as a gesture of support for the families. Better Breathers Club For the estimated 16 million Americans living with cardiopulmonary disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), participating in a support group can improve their emotional well-being and have a positive impact on their health. That is why Surge Rehabilitation and Nursing, located at 49
Oakcrest Ave in Middle Island, has joined with the American Lung Association (ALA) to form a Better Breathers Club at the facility which offers an opportunity for cardiopulmonary disease patients to connect virtually, via ZOOM, with others who are facing similar experiences, obtain practical information and to receive
support. The Middle Island facility has had a pulmonary support group for several years, but the partnership with the ALA is a new venture, resulting in twice the number of group participants. “With this support group we hope to promote respiratory health and a better sense of wellbeing for those living with chronic lung disease,”
Robert Madigan, Director of the Cardio Pulmonary program at Surge. The support group can also address lingering issues experienced by patients who have had COVID-19. The support group will cover an introduction to cardiopulmonary diseases; the benefits of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation; the role
of family support in cardiopulmonary disease; heart healthy medical nutrition therapy and communicating with healthcare professionals. The monthly support group meets every 3rd Wednesday at 1pm of the month and is open to all and is currently using ZOOM meeting format. To receive the Zoom invite information

Saladino Announces Virtual GAP Program for DevelopmentallyDisabled Residents Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that Town’s Group Activities Program (GAP), open to residents age 5 and over with developmental disabilities, is going fully virtual beginning in January. The GAP program, which is administered through the Town’s Department of Community and Youth Services, provides a unique socialrecreational experience for developmentally-disabled children and adults. “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to offer this
wonderful program, which consists of game nights, entertainment nights, and even virtual field trips,” stated Supervisor Saladino. “These experiences provide a safe means of interaction and offer both children and adults a wonderful opportunity.” The program runs on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and is open to Town of Oyster Bay residents. Recovered COVID-19 Patients Battling Long-Term Health Effects COVID-19 has impacted tens of thousands of Long Islanders, and many who have recovered from the virus are now combatting a variety of lingering health issues as a result. Known as “longhaulers” these individuals are living with the chronic effects of the virus that can include organ damage, poor lung function, fatigue, muscle aches, cognitive slowing and headaches. Also, long-haulers still exhibit various symptoms of COVID even after testing negative for the virus.
“The long-lasting health effects of COVID-19 could affect anyone at any age, but appears to be more likely with those over the age of 50,” said Director of Infectious Disease at Catholic Health Service’s (CHS) St. Francis Hospital Alan M. Bulbin, M.D. “Those with other comorbidities, chronic illnesses or those who have had a more serious acute infection are also more likely to be impacted. But we have also seen younger patients show long-term health impacts after recovering
from the virus.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it is actively working to learn more about the range of shortand long-term health effects associated with COVID-19. CDC officials said continued research is revealing that many organs, including the lungs and heart, are impacted by the virus. Dr. Bulbin recommends that medical treatment for long-haulers should be managed by an individual’s primary care physician. He said the
challenge currently facing doctors in treating those with long-lasting health results from COVID-19 is identifying the proper treatment regimen. To help those dealing with long-term health effects of COVID-19, CHS’s St. Charles Hospital now offers a Post-COVID Outpatient Rehabilitation Program. Patients who are at least 14 days past a COVID-19 diagnosis are provided medicallysupervised physical therapy for endurance training, strength training and education.
Recognizing a need to develop a program specifically for patients who are dealing with the after-effects of COVID-19, the medical team at St. Charles used their experience in working with patients who have respiratory illnesses such as emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
