raders from Harry B. Thompson Middle School in Syosset visited Washington D.C. this fall. Students toured the FDR Memorial, the Washington Monument, the White House and several Smithsonian museums. They also met with their local representative, Congressman Steve Israel, who answered several excellent questions about government. In an effort to address the growing problem of homelessness among New York families, Community Housing Innovations (CHI) and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone have joined together to launch the CHI Fresh Start program. This initiative will allow the public to directly purchase Bed Bath & Beyond® gift cards for homeless families in five counties outside of New York City. As part of the kickoff for this program, Mr. Bellone presented the Harris family with the first-ever CHI Fresh Start-funded $100 Bed Bath & Beyond gift card, which he has purchased as a gift. CHI has also secured housing for this family of five - all Long Island natives - which includes three schoolage children, age five, 17 and 19, who have all been without a home for
14 months due to job loss and rent increases. “As we are all thinking about and preparing for the holidays, there are many families who are in search of a permanent home,” said Mr. Bellone. “Today, we had the opportunity to introduce a family to their new home and provide them with much-needed assistance in purchasing the items necessary to make this house a home. I applaud Community Housing Innovations and Bed Bath and Beyond for collaborating on the launch of the Fresh Start Program.” Community Housing Innovations, the largest provider of housing for the homeless in suburban New York, has connected with Bed Bath & Beyond to encourage individuals, families and businesses alike to purchase gift cards through the Bed Bath & Beyond special toll-free
number; 844-52-I-CARE. One hundred percent of this anonymous, taxdeductible donation will be given to a family or individual currently living in a local shelter in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess and Orange Counties to purchase household items from the retailer. Donors will receive an acknowledgment of their contribution for tax purposes. “No family should have to spend the holidays in a homeless shelter, yet thousands of low-income New York individuals and families find themselves in that situation,” says Alexander Roberts, Executive Director of CHI. “Our goal is to provide a $100 gift card to each family when they find permanent housing, but the public may donate whatever amount they like, starting at as little as $5.”

CHI provides housing for one thousand homeless people, including more than 200 families in Suffolk County - primarily single mothers and children each night in shelters and emergency apartments. While social workers and housing specialists do their best, families face the bleak prospect of spending the joyous holiday season alone with strangers. Finding an affordable, permanent home takes an average of four months. Since most people are in emergency housing due to eviction or foreclosure, they often have very little to their names. While counties provide the bare essentials - beds, a dining table, a couch the gift cards will allow the families to buy linens, blankets, pillows and housewares that turn a house or apartment into a home.

Music & Breakfast Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School students recently hosted their annual Veterans Breakfast to honor United States military. Students sang a variety of patriotic, traditional and popular musical selections. Under the guidance of music teachers Maria McCumiskey and Karen Bernstein, students were reminded of the importance of thanking the nation’s military heroes. Middle School
Advisory Program (MAP) leaders prepared and served pastries, baked goods, coffee, tea, and juice to over sixty veterans and student-poets read patriotic poetry in honor of local military veterans. Students also donated necessary goods, including toiletries and every-day grocery items, to United States Beacon House. The United Veterans Beacon House works with veterans with physical disabilities, Post-Traumatic Stress
Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, mental health issues and/or alcohol addiction. In addition to the breakfast celebration, students also spent the month of November talking about service and sacrifice in their MAP classes. Along with student support, the efforts of Ms. Glassman, Ms. Goldstein, Ms. Infranca, Ms. Klein and Ms. Menashe made the program a success.

students in Mrs. Krowles and Mrs. Cohen’s science classes researched an assigned biome, including how animals live their lives and how they have adapted to that specific environment. Students were then challenged to create “superspecies,” which combined the strongest traits of three animals that live in the assigned biome.
Models of the invented animals were created using craft and recycled materials according to the structural adaptations including a specific height, length and weight constraints. Students presented their animals and gave a PowerPoint presentation to teach their classmates about their biome and animal adaptations.

The Meals from the Heart Dinner Program at the Ronald McDonald House aims to teach students the importance of giving back and helping those in need. After cooking and cleaning up, the Spanish
Honor Society students were given a tour of the facility. Ronald McDonald House is committed to providing a place that feels like home to families with children affected by illness to refresh. The students were all very impressed by the environment and inspired to see what is provided at the Ronald McDonald house for the children and their families.

Christmas time is here. The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories. These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation. Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we
can recapture the true spirit of the season. Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer. For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration. ‘Tis the season, indeed. The upside? In
the grand scheme of things, being deprived of live entertainment (temporarily, as I haven’t given up quite yet) isn’t the end of the world. As we prepare to turn the page on yet another year, we should give thanks for the important things – our health, our loved ones, the ability to celebrate with family and friends… perspective. And with that, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Members of the Syosset High School robotics program recently served as hosts for the FIRST Tech Challenge robotics scrimmage and workshop. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an organization that sponsors a variety of robotics competitions to inspire young people to build science, engineering, and technology skills that inspire innovation and foster self-confidence and leadership characteristics. Students who participate
in the FIRST Tech Challenge design, build and program aspects of robot development. This student-led event was held at the Composite Prototyping Center in Plainview. FIRST teams from Syosset, Half Hollow Hills East, Oyster Bay, Massapequa and the Murry Bergtraum School in New York City attended. Teams used the day to test and modify their robots in a friendly competition environment. Students also had an opportunity
to tour the state-ofthe-art CPC composites manufacturing facility and network with local engineering professionals. The FIRST Tech Challenge was coordinated to provide an opportunity for Long Island and New York City robotics teams to collaborate and practice for upcoming regional qualifying robotics competitions. Thomas Morritt and Craig Mooers are the robotics advisers at Syosset High School.

Water Based Education Students in Lara Bodt’s fourth-grade class at East Street Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District participated in a pair of workshops about Long Island water and aquifers. The interactive and hands-on activities,
designed to teach students about the properties of water and states of matter, were led by Karen Mossey, an educator from the Long Island Water Program of the North Shore Land Alliance. In groups, students created aquifers to
observe and analyze, and conducted experiments related to elements such as precipitation. The activities collectively served to enhance students’ understanding about the various properties of water.
HOMES WHERE THE HEART IS - Second-grade students at Woodland Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District built gingerbread houses as part of a grade-wide activity with their loved ones. Students and their parents used graham crackers, frosting and a variety of other decorative ingredients to construct the treats. Hispanic Recognition Congratulations to Syosset High School senior Brian Schultheis, who was recently named a National Hispanic Scholar in the College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program. Brian scored in the top 2.5 percent among Hispanic/Latino
students in the region on the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Additionally, he had to complete an extensive application for evaluation by the College Board. Participation in the NHRP enables Hispanic/ Latino students to further

he Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $65,333 to the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation. This donation will enhance the hospital’s anesthesia services by supporting the acquisition
of an Apollo® Anesthesia Machine, an advanced system with ventilation technology to support patients of any age. This gift brought the Guilds’ 2015 donations to a total of more than $211,000 for various
programs, including surgical intensive care and emergency services. Made up of volunteers from surrounding communities, the Guilds have raised more than $10 million for the hospital since 1958.

Ranked First SPECIAL DELIVERY - The Nassau County Emergency Ambulance Bureau Paramedics Association joined with Santa Claus to visit the pediatric patients at the Nassau University Medical Center and bring them a gift for the holidays recently. The medics presented the toys to the patients and their parents and were joined by Dr. Victor Politi, President/CEO of the NuHealth System/NUMC, as well as by Michael Mirotznik, chairman of the Board of Directors, during their visit. They pulled up to the main entrance of the hospital with Santa and the elves on a train followed by an ambulance.

Students had an opportunity to place their handmade ornaments on the tree and then staff, students and parents counted down to light the tree. This was followed by individual pictures and personal time with Santa. Snacks were served and each student received a toy of their choice. Local artist Mel Moran serenaded the crowd with acoustic versions of holiday songs during the event. “The Children’s Center Tree Lighting was a huge success,” Glazer said. “This event supported our students’ independence and functional movement as well as supporting them with positioning while getting the perfect picture
with Santa. I want to thank the Patchogue Rotary and the Gutierrez Family for sponsoring the event. Thank You to Mel Moran and to Edward Friedman who played Santa and donated the toys to the
