Kennedy High School announced that every fall interscholastic varsity athletic team was awarded the NYS Public High School Athletic Association’s Scholar-Athlete Team Award, which recognizes teams where 75% of the roster earns a cumulative team GPA of 90 or higher during the 1st quarter of school. Exceeding all requirements, the district also announced that 71% of all varsity student athletes individually achieved a GPA of 90+.

Now in its fifth year, the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island Half Hollow Hills Invitational has become a staple of the local FIRST Robotics Competition season. The event, which this year was held on Saturday, November 19 at Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills, New York, with support from School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), is a way for teams to face off using the previous season’s robots one final time before launching into the next build season. This year’s event featured 24 teams, which competed using the robots they built for the 2016 Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition, held in March, the challenge for which
was dubbed was FIRST StrongHold™. This past season, and at the Invitational, FIRST robots battled on a 27-by54-foot playing field on which participants earned points by accomplishing set tasks. Some of the goals included traversing obstacles, throwing “boulders” into various openings of the castle and climbing the tower
– which resulted in extra points. The winning trio/ alliance comprised of Patchogue-Medford High School Team #329 “Mohawks,” West Islip High School Team #871 “Robotechs” and finally Team #2875 “CyberHawks” of Cold Spring Harbor. The

My Night Before Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,
becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with
perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. How grateful I am that it was though, even for a brief moment in time. Merry Christmas to all. May your Eve bring even a hint of that same magic.

Art from the Heart Art is a powerful medium of expression. Particularly for the aging, it can present an opportunity to open up to outsiders what may be a lifetime of inspirational images never before shared. Thirteen artists who happen to be residents of New York State skilled nursing and assisted living facilities translated visions from their hearts and minds into winning entries of a juried art contest, now featured in a 2017 calendar, “Art from the Heart.” The annual calendar is the result of an art contest launched in 2004 by the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc., the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and the New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL). Residents of more than 335 NYSHFA/ NYSCAL member skilled nursing and assisted living facilities around the state were invited to submit artwork. Proceeds from the calendar will help improve the quality of life for long term care residents at facilities across New York. Each NYSHFA/NYSCAL member was encouraged to hold their own art contest and was invited to submit up to two pieces of original artwork by their residents. The response was overwhelming, with more than 85 pieces submitted from across New York state. The judges included representatives
from the New York State Museum and the Sorelle Gallery in Albany. Ranging in age from 57 to 97, the different backgrounds of the artists who submitted work creates a unique blend of artistic styles. Some are professional artists who have been drawing and painting their entire lives, while others discovered their talents after moving into a long term care
facility where they began taking art classes. “Our residents have shared such rich stories through their artwork,” said Richard S. Patterson, Jr., executive director of the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. “The ‘Art from the Heart’ calendar provides a forum for these talented and interesting individuals to shine.”

Two students enrolled in Syosset High School’s Virtual Enterprise course finished in the top 10 in the Elevator Pitch competition at the Virtual Enterprise International Business and Entrepreneurial Leadership Conference, recently held at LIU Post. This included secondplace honors out of 74 competing VE businesses. VE students take on the roles of business professionals and create a workplace environment in the classroom. They
brainstorm ideas for a product, service or marketable concept, then establish their company by submitting resumes and cover letters to hopefully land an interview for different positions, including the CEO. They develop a genuine understanding of how a business is run and marketed while gaining expertise in problem-solving, decisionmaking, communication, collaboration, technology and accessing, using and

The organization uses comprehensive school data from the U.S. Department of Education as well as school reviews and online survey responses. Syosset schools have previously received high rankings from Niche.com, including No. 3 for teaching for the current year. Last year, the site recognized Syosset High School as one of the top high schools in the country, joining the Washington Post and U.S. News & World Report as institutions that rate Syosset among the best in the state and nation. Earlier this year, the high school was also named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, one of just 279 public schools in the country to receive the honor.
Scholar Athlete Team Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s John F. Kennedy High School announced today every fall interscholastic varsity athletic team was awarded the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s (NYSPHSAA) Scholar-Athlete Team Award.
The award recognizes teams where 75% of the roster earn a cumulative team GPA of 90 or higher during the 1st quarter of the school. Exceeding all the requirement the District also announced that 71% of all varsity student athletes individually achieved a GPA of 90 or higher.
The NYSPHSAA is a non-profit, voluntary, educational service organization composed of public, parochial, and private schools dedicated to providing equitable and safe competition for the students of its member schools.

A Day in the Life The Plainview-Old Bethpage School District Judy Jacobs Parkway Elementary School fourth grade students recently learned the ways of the Iroquois and Native Americans throughout American history. The students learned how living in New York influenced Native
American life. The students tackled the question, “Does where you live matter?” as they realized the Iroquois geographical location and access to natural resources influenced methods to survival. This included the procedure the Iroquois adopted to build their shelter, or longhouses. Teachers Debbie Lovett
and Tara Marcone and Jill Greenblatt challenged their students to use natural resources or purchased materials representing materials found in nature to build an authentic model of a longhouse shelter. The assignment aimed to bring classroom lessons to life in a creative way.

H.B. Thompson Middle School in Syosset conducted two drives to improve the lives of others less fortunate during its recent Spirit Week celebration. The HBT Book Club collected more than 1,000 new and gently used books for the not-for-profit Book Fairies organization, based in Freeport. Book
Fairies distributes books and other reading materials to children and adults throughout the metropolitan area, providing a respite from personal struggles and nurturing a love of reading across age groups. Additionally, the HBT Student Council held a food drive to benefit Island Harvest, Long Island’s
largest hunger relief organization. More than 800 non-perishable items were collected to help feed those in need. Students earned extra Spirit Week points for their contributions. Great job by all of the students, their families and school staff members for once again showing that Thompson is a community of caring.

Flipping for Science Wondering how the latest adolescent craze can be constructive? Students at South Woods Middle School in Syosset recently ‘flipped’ for a science lesson during which they explored the role of gravity and water level
by successfully flipping a water bottle. They formed hypotheses about the optimum amount of water needed for a successful flipping experience, then tested their theories, recorded data and compared results.
“I never thought I’d be allowed to flip bottles in class!” said one student. “It was neat to learn about gravity and angular momentum through something fun.”

Two senior members of the Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School men’s varsity volleyball team were recently chosen as members of the Newsday 1st Team All-Long Island Team. The two students, Daniel Kim and Ethan Klein, received this honor in conjunction with their coach Russi Villalta being named the Newsday Coach of the Year. “We are so incredibly proud of Daniel and Ethan, who have proved themselves time and time again both outside and inside the classroom,” said Dr. Lorna Lewis. “They’re success is clearly a result of the guidance and dedication of their coach and member of our staff, Russi Villalta. Congratulations to all.” In addition to his most recent honor, Daniel Kim was also recognized as Newsday Player of the Year. Kim has received multiple honors in the last two years for his athletic talent, being named All County
in 2015 and 2016. He has also been a member of the 2nd team Newsday AllLong Island in 2015 and the Nassau County PlayOff team in both 2015 and 2016. Ethan Klein has also received multiple accolades for his expertise in volleyball. Klein was named All County in 2016, received an Honorable Mention for All County in 2015, was a member of the Nassau County Play-off Team in 2015 and 2016, and was named the Nassau County Tournament MVP in 2016. The same commitment and diligence is reflected in the leadership of their coach who sets an example
for the team day in and day out. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this honor than our own Coach Villalta.” Coach Russi Villalta has been coaching at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School for the past 23 years after coaching three years at CW Post. During her time as coach of the CW Post team, Coach Villalta brought the team to two National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournaments. “I’ve been coaching at this school since 1993 and every year we focus on communication, being a team and to keep the love of the sport,” said Coach Russi Villalta. “We have been to the Nassau County Championships 18 times, winning eight of them, so it’s the process that I hope they keep in their hearts. It is one of the most gratifying feeling to know Danny and Ethan not only excelled at this sport of volleyball but that they love the game.”
Coding Experts The Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School (POBMS) recently celebrated Computer Science Education Week in an effort to promote digital literacy. Throughout the week, students engaged in activities such as the Hour of Code Program, which teaches children how to code, heard from a local computer software professional and
participated in a Minecraft coding workshop. Mr. Michael Getz, a local computer software professional and leader in the computer science and technology industry, visited POBMS students for an assembly on what computer related skills are, why they’re important, and how they can be turned into a future career. Getz engaged students by offering examples of famous celebrities such as Jimmy Fallon who have
experience with coding, as well as entrepreneurs who have benefited from having coding skills and the importance of digital literacy. Following the assembly, students met with Mr. Getz during recess for a Minecraft coding workshop, where they learned advanced coding skills and asked further questions related to computer science.

Members of Hofstra University’s Business Entrepreneurship precollege program visited Wantagh Middle School’s Computer Science Club to discuss the future of virtual reality. Michael Chisema, senior director of administration
and finance, explained that the goal of the visit was to discuss possible and emerging careers in virtual reality and 3-D printing and to demonstrate products, which already exist on the market. During the meeting the students had the

Virtual Reality opportunity to test variations of an oculus rift and a Google Cardboard VR. The Hofstra University faculty also demonstrated use of a 3-D printer. In addition, each student received a 3-D printed computer club logo as a keepsake.

Bellmore student Sam Kalish was the winner of Winthrop Avenue’s annual fourth-grade spelling bee with William Cona, Spenser Perlmutter and Skylar White technically all placing second in the competition. Part of the North Bellmore School District’s mission is to inspire students to contribute to the global community. This holiday season, children have been doing just that by holding collections for food, toys and clothing. At Saw Mill Road Elementary School, a food drive will benefit local families in need, with donations going to the Community Cupboard at the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Brookside School. Each grade was assigned specific nonperishable items to bring in to ensure that a variety of food was collected. Members of Students Against Destructive Decisions created posters, which were hung throughout the hallways to promote the drive.
The Student Council organized a pajama drive, an idea brought by thirdgrader Luke Fischetti after successfully doing it on his own last year. The pajamas will be sent to the Ashley Wade Foundation, which supports children with chronic illnesses. Luke said he came up with the idea to “help kids in need and brighten their holidays” and was proud to have his classmates join the effort this year. Newbridge Road Elementary School hosted a toy drive for the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, with students asked to bring new, unwrapped toys. Generosity is the character trait of the month at the school, and Theissen spoke to the children about his organization and the importance of giving to the
less fortunate. S c h o o l s throughout the district partnered with the Bellmore Lions Club to collect hats, scarves, gloves and other winter clothing accessories, which will be distributed to children living in shelters in Nassau County. The district and PTA Council also worked together to hold a Coats for Kids drive. Students were asked to bring in new or gently used jackets to benefit Long Island families. “It’s always heartwarming to see the community come together in support of those who are in need,” said Newbridge Road Principal Denise Fisher. “It’s nice that we’re teaching the students at a young age how to give back.”
Up to Code North Bellmore elementary students joined millions of youngsters around the world by taking part in the Hour of Code campaign from December 5th-9th. The international movement sponsored by Code.org aimed to take the mystery out of coding by showing how anyone can learn the basics of computer programming. Throughout the week, students in third through sixth grades did coding activities as instructional technology specialists Michael Bevilacqua and Jenna Stack visited classrooms. “The students
understand that they don’t have to just consume media, they can create it,” said Ms. Stack. “The Hour of Code is well received. The kids enjoy it and the teachers are seeing the benefits.” Children made simple video games using coding languages appropriate to their respective grade levels, such as Scratch and Code Monkey. They also learned how computer programming pertains to their everyday lives and gained an appreciation for the people who make the video games they play, the mobile apps they use and the animated movies they watch.
Computer coding fosters creativity, imagination, innovation and individual expression while allowing children to develop their problem-solving abilities. The Hour of Code introduced students to computer science skills that are required for numerous jobs and even college-level courses. “I like to learn this because you can you do so many things with these skills,” said John Hinojosa, a sixth-grader at Martin Avenue Elementary School. “It’s going to help me and I can have fun with this.”
