Making Spirits Bright
“Making spirits bright” was especially true when members of the women’s club (through the leadership of Rosemary Emigholz and Anna Ievolo) delivered 31 bags filled with toys, books, blankets, stuffed animals, warm clothes and toiletries to the Madonna Heights Homeless Shelter in Dix Hills on Wednesday, December 6th. Then on Thursday, December 7th, the women’s club held its annual Christmas Party at the Bethpage Country Club chaired by Barbara Hoerner and her committee – Loda Romanelli and Rosemary Trudden where guests enjoyed “a capello” caroling by members. The club congratulated two of its members for accepting
positions for 20182020 with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs – NYS (GFWC-NYS): Barbara Hoerner, Public Issues and club president Tina Diamond, Island Metro District Director. The following day on Friday, December 8th, Rosemary & George Emigholz invited members and friends to their Holiday Open House and Christmas Village Display. Guests enjoyed many homemade breads and cookies, as well as an annual favorite of mulled apple cider prepared by Anna Ievolo. Saturday, December 9th, found women’s club members at the Farmingdale Public Library, sewing “Made with Love” labels on handmade aphgans and

COATS FOR KIDS - Legislator Rose Marie Walker was pleased to help out at the 27th annual Knights of Pythias Coat for Kids Drive held at John H. West Elementary school. HARMONY CAFÉ
Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)
on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Last on the List Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed. Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like. Not that I am much better when it comes to this. Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown
up yet. Alas, my apartment doesn’t allow for a furry fourlegged friend; besides, my little baby betta Spud would be jealous. They say people have become increasingly thoughtless in the age of technology, opting to do most of their shopping online and “mail it in” when it comes to selecting the perfect present. I, for one, still prefer to personally browse the stores, even if I have a fairly good idea of what I want to buy. Nothing quite compares to that personal touch. So why have I barely begun this process with less than a week remaining ‘til Christmas? An excellent question, deflected by a focus on de-twinkling my flickering window lights, decorating my balcony just in time for the annual cleaning-of-thegutters to completely cover everything in a fine black

layer of dirt and ground-up leaves, and contemplating how to shove all things not Christmas-related into any available corner of the closet. Gift shopping, or even listmaking, not so much. And yet somehow, some way, everything manages to get done each year… even if, at times, it has included wrapping presents in the corner of my bedroom as company arrives on Christmas Eve. No need for ribbons and bows, as long as the box is (relatively) covered and the right person winds up with the appropriate package. In everything, it’s the thought that counts. With that, sending thoughts to all of our readers for a healthy, happy holiday season. Here’s hoping you all receive everything on your wish list.

During its December 11th business meeting, the Syosset Central School District Board of Education approved a resolution to submit to community residents two propositions to modernize the District’s aging facilities. A bond referendum (known as Proposition No. 1) would make capital and safety improvements to every building. A second proposition (known as Proposition No. 2) would make safety and energy efficiency improvements to every building. A public vote on both propositions will be held on Tuesday, February 13th, 2018. Prior to the meeting on December 11th, the District Administration hosted several community facilities planning meetings, where residents had the opportunity to learn about the proposed scope of work and to provide feedback. The Board of Education took this feedback into consideration before finalizing the scope of work included in Proposition 1. Established by the United Nations in 1954 and recognized annually on November 20th, Universal Children’s Day is a day dedicated to promoting international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide and improving children’s welfare. She performed the violin in the video as a member of the Joyous String Ensemble, a traveling musical group (unaffiliated with Syosset CSD) that has appeared on “America’s Got Talent” and has performed at the White House Christmas tree lighting. The ensemble has performed at other events and venues around the world, including a trip to China last summer where they helped raise funds to provide a 14-year-old boy with a lifesaving heart procedure. “It feels really good when you can use the power of music to help people and
make a positive impact on those who are in need, one small step at a time,” said Sabrina, who attended the recording of the video in New York City and called it an uplifting moment that she will treasure for the rest of her life. The South Woods Middle School Action, Awareness and Acceptance Club has also been developing ways to extend the message of Universal Children’s Day beyond Nov. 20, which is also the date when the U.N. General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Run for the Warriors
Hundreds of local runners recently took to the streets of the Town of Babylon to participate in the annual Run for the Warriors hosted by Councilman Tom Donnelly. Participants of all ages included veterans, their loved ones and others
who wanted to honor the sacrifices made by the members of our military overseas. A number of wounded veterans participated in the run, which included three routes of varied distances (10K, 5K and 1 mile), by riding hand and foot cycles.
Many participants honored loved ones in the military, some of whom gave the ultimate sacrifice, by carrying signs and American flags as they completed the course
in the 1950’s, meaning that some buildings will be nearly 70 years old by the time this work begins. The propositions are part of the long-term District strategy to address facilities needs that began with a successful referendum for Phase I in May of 2017. The two propositions on the February ballot represent Phase 2 of the work needed to remedy the District’s five-year building condition survey of needed repairs and renovations. Phase 2 will also address traffic and safety condition improvements, renovations to instructional spaces and athletic fields, and HVAC systems and electrical upgrades. The total cost of Proposition No. 1 is $45,810,000. To offset the cost, the district will expend $11,464,500 in Capital Reserve Fund monies, which will reduce the maximum cost of Proposition No. 1 to $34,345,500. If approved by voters, a homeowner currently paying $10,000/ year in school taxes would see an annual increase of approximately $20.65.
Proposition No. 2, if approved, will authorize the District to enter into an energy performance contract to make energy efficiency improvements to District buildings and facilities including: furnace replacements and heating and ventilation system upgrades, solar power, energy management systems, electrical co-generation, lighting upgrades and replacements, ceiling replacements and other energy conservation measures. Voting will take place on Tuesday, February 13th, 2018 from 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. at Robbins Lane Elementary School, H.B. Thompson Middle School and Syosset High School. Prior to the vote, the District is planning to host community information meetings and provide more information regarding both propositions to enable community residents to make an informed decision on February 13th, 2018. Army Retiree
Army Reserve Col. Robert C. Cutajar has retired from the U.S. Army after serving honorably for 35 years. Cutajar was last serving as Colonel, Aviation Branch, Individual Ready Reserve, Fort Knox, Ky.
Hailing from North Massapequa, NY, Col. Cutajar currently lives in northern KY. Originally branched Infantry, Cutajar becamea paratrooper and helicopter pilot, serving in a variety
of positions in active Army units such as the 82nd Airborne Division, XVIII Airborne Corps, 2nd Armored Division, 22nd Support Command, 1st Infantry Division, and 1st Special Operations Command (Airborne), He is the recipient of two Bronze Star Medals, four Meritorious Service Medals, and five Army Commendation Medals, in addition to numerous other Army, joint service, NATO and foreign military awards and decorations for exceptional service in both peacetime and combat. Cutajar graduated in 1978 from Plainedge High School, North Massapequa, N.Y., and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1982 from Hofstra University, Hempstead.
In recognition of National Computer Science Education Week on December 4th-10th, kindergarten students in the Wantagh School District were introduced to the concept of coding and became “programmers” using Kodable. Teachers Danielle Luke and Henry Chiu solicited the help of student volunteers to guide the kindergartners through the
program’s obstacle course, where they learned to move in various directions, to click and drag directional arrows into code boxes and to utilize applied mouse skills. In addition, Mr. Chiu shared how humans use coding to instruct robots in the field of manufacturing and discussed various computer science jobs they can pursue as adults. Director of Technology Penny Curry said, “The

Coding in Kodable district’s Hour of Code provided the students with integrated learning above and beyond computer coding basics.” In addition to problem-solving skills, the students made important connections between vocabulary and understanding how simple directional terms are integral to computer coding, Curry noted.

A Conversation The Global Institute at LIU hosted General (ret.) David Petraeus at Humanities Hall on the LIU Post campus for a conversation with the Institute’s Chairman, former Congressman Steve Israel. General Petraeus is a partner in the global investment firm KKR, chairman of the KKR Global Institute, a Judge Widney Professor at the University of Southern California, a member of the board of Optiv (a global cyber security solutions provider), and a personal venture capitalist. Congressman Israel began the program by discussing the critical role the Global Institute at LIU plays in the region. Congressman Israel explained the deep perspective he gained on global issues as a member of Congress because of the firsthand access he had to world leaders who could explain the complexities of different issues. He noted that when he left Congress, he wanted to create a forum for our region to have access to that insight that proved so valuable to understand a complex world. “So we set up the Global Institute as a place to understand what is happening in the world and understand it not from whichever tribal media that you happen to watch or listen to, not from tweets and not from Facebook, but from the people who have been at the center of gravity of those challenges and the people who continue to be at the center of those challenges,” Congressman Israel said. General Petraeus spoke with Congressman Israel about the global conflicts that the United States has and continues to face in a lengthy Q&A, including threats from ISIS and North Korea. He noted that ISIS will remain a threat even after they cease occupying physical space because of the threat they pose in cyberspace, and how we will need to adjust to that challenge. And while he laid bare the stark challenges we face as a nation and a world in light of those threats, he also made a point to discuss how optimistic he felt. “How can you not be optimistic, especially on a college
campus on Long Island’s Gold Coast?” he asked. After taking many questions from an audience primarily composed of veterans and students, along with members of the community and political leaders, General Petraeus answered what he believed was the important unasked question of the night: What have we learned from the last 16 years of war since the events of September 11th, 2001. “I think there’s lessons,” he said. “And I think if you accept these, that the policy that falls out is actually very straightforward and this is also a lesson perhaps for the students in here of why you want to get the overarching big ideas right up front. So, for example with the surge in
Iraq, the surge that mattered most was not the addition of forces, but the surge of ideas. We changed all the ideas of what our strategy had been 180 degrees. For one example, securing the people was job one. And we recognized that you could not secure the people by doing what we were doing, which was consolidating them on big bases and getting out of the neighborhoods. We had to go back into the neighborhoods and we ended up establishing seventy-seven more locations.” That adaptability speaks to what Congressman Israel had mentioned in his introduction: that instead of
focusing on “hardware,” he instead put resources into feeding the intellectual minds of the soldiers and worked on changing hearts and minds on the ground. Prior to joining KKR, General Petraeus served over 37 years in the U.S. Army, including command of coalition forces during the Surge in Iraq, command of U.S. Central Command, and command of coalition forces in Afghanistan. Following his service in the military General Petraeus served as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. “General Petraeus is a longtime friend and colleague I am honored to host at Long Island University,” said Congressman Israel. “His wealth of experience in global affairs is virtually unmatched and brings depth and perspective to the global conflicts in the past and how what we’ve learned can help mitigate our involvement in the world going forward.” Congressman Steve Israel is Chairman of the Global Institute at Long Island University, a university Writer-InResidence. During his sixteen years as a Member of Congress, Israel’s office recovered nearly $9 million in retroactive benefits for New Yorkers who served in the Armed Forces. As a member of both the House Armed Services Committee and the Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, Israel has unique expertise in national and global security issues. He maintains strong relationships with military, intelligence and national leaders at home and abroad. He’s experienced in the areas of missile technology, cyber defense and professional military education. Israel is also a widely sought expert on the National Intelligence Council’s quadrennial forecasts of future conflict. He created the Democratic Study Group on National Security and has lectured at West Point and the National Defense University, and delivered the commencement address at the Navy War College.

Antibiotics Aren’t Always The Answer CDC Urges Public To Be Antibiotics Aware (NAPSI)—The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages patients and families to Be Antibiotics Aware by learning about safe antibiotic use. Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people get infected with antibioticresistant bacteria. At least 23,000 die as a result. Antibiotic resistance, one of the most urgent threats to the public’s health, occurs when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them.
What Do Antibiotics Treat? Antibiotics are critical tools for treating a number of common infections, such as pneumonia, and for life-threatening conditions including sepsis. Antibiotics are only needed for treating certain infections caused by bacteria. What Don’t Antibiotics Treat? Antibiotics do not work on viruses, such as colds and flu, or runny noses, even if the mucus is thick, yellow or green.
Antibiotics also won’t help some common bacterial infections including most cases of bronchitis, many sinus infections, and some ear infections. On December 12th, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn paid a visit to the
facility and the individuals working there. The greenhouse is open to the public Monday – Friday 10:30am – 1:30pm for all your holiday plant needs. All the proceeds from plant sales help support this program. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer
questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. Animal Projects Duggan, Jagger Duque, Brian Licata, Julianna Mauro, Evan Pittman, Talia Robles, Justin Segrete and Massimo Sustic worked on the project with teachers Lori Alduino and Lauren Saccone. They collected the bottles from their peers as well as the district’s other elementary schools. In addition to their fundraising efforts, the students worked on educational activities to do with younger students in the school. The group
will visit third- and fourthgrade classrooms to teach children about gorillas and other animals around the world. They created their own book will follow-up questions. The sixth-graders also designed two art projects. Students will be given a sheet with half of the face of a gorilla and will have to draw in the other half. They will also make Bob the dog - Ivan’s friend in the book - using tissue boxes and cardboard tubes.
Members of the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s Wellington C. Mepham High School wrestling team were named this year’s Sprig Gardner Tournament Champions after the December 9th meet. Sixteen Pirate wrestlers placed in the top six to lead Mepham to a major upset over heavily favored Bellmore-Merrick
