The Problem The number of ladderrelated injuries in the United Sates increased by more than 50 percent in 15 years, says a study in an issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Helpful Hints These tips from the Consumer Product Safety Commission can help prevent you from becoming such a statistic: • Always level the ladder on firm ground. • Have someone hold the lower end. • Keep ladders away from doors that can be opened. • Only one person on a ladder. • Don’t stand on the top rung. Nassau Offers Holiday Cheer The 2019 holiday season is upon us and Nassau County is offering a wide range of festive and affordable activities throughout County Parks, Museums and other facilities including an 1860s-style Thanksgiving, personalized letters from Santa, gingerbread cookie workshops, a holiday celebration for military families, and free performances by a symphony orchestra, to name a few. On Saturday, December 21st from 4-7 pm Last Hope Animal Rescue will be continuing a holiday tradition begun in 1998. They will be hosting “Trees of Love” at the Last Hope Adoption Center located at 3300 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh. Refreshments will be served after the tree illumination ceremony. There will also be raffle basket prizes. Wear an Ugly Christmas sweater to

In addition to the group’s academic success, 75% of all varsity student athletes received the NYSPHSAA Individual Scholar Athlete Award. This award is given to any varsity student athlete who has individually achieved a GPA of 90 or above. “These awards are a remarkable achievement for our interscholastic athletic teams and demonstrate a true commitment to education
from our student athletes, coaches, teachers and staff,” said Dr. Lorna Lewis, Superintendent of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. The NYSPHSAA is a non-profit, voluntary, educational service organization composed of public, parochial, and private schools dedicated to providing equitable and safe competition for the students of its member schools.
The Symphonic Pops of Long Island, an intergenerational orchestra of approximately 60 musicians all living on Long Island, will present a program of music on Sunday, December 22, at 2 pm at Brookside School, 1260 Meadowbrook, Road, North Merrick. The program will include: Chariots of Fire, Harry Potter Suite, Dance of the Tumblers, music from Frozen and other favorites. The Orchestra will once again be joined in concert with a special appearance by dancers from Oceanside Dance Center. The Orchestra (formerly known as the “Senior Pops Orchestra of Long Island”) is led by Stephen Michael
Smith who has been Music Director since 2011. His guest conducting credits include: The Wroclaw Philharmonic (Poland), St. Petersburg Camerata (Russia), Karlovy Vary Philharmonic (Czech Republic) in addition to conducting various orchestras across the Country. Mr. Smith also currently serves as Music Director for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset. The Symphonic Pops recently performed at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook where 350+ Veterans were in attendance. This concert is open to the public and a
suggested donation of $10 will be requested at the door (kids are free). The facility is handicapped accessible, and there is adequate free parking. The Symphonic Pops of Long Island is a communitybased volunteer orchestra under the direction of Stephen Michael Smith. The orchestra provides Long Island with the opportunity to enjoy various genres of music at a reasonable price. It is funded by sponsorships, grants and donations and was established in 1979. MFTs are licensed mental health professionals who work with individuals, couples (married or not), families of all types, and groups to cure or relieve mental,
emotional and relational concerns of all kinds. How To Recognize Depression To help you tell if you or someone you care about is suffering from depression, the experts at the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) offer these warning signs: • Feeling sad and/or irritable • Changes in weight or appetite • Difficulty sleeping • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness or worthlessness
• Inability to concentrate, remember things or make decisions • Thoughts of death or suicide. How To Handle Depression If these symptoms look familiar, here are some things to do right now: • Recognize depression early. Depression can happen to anyone. It’s not a character defect, a weakness or a shameful condition. It’s a serious disorder that no one is immune to. • Engage in your life.
If you are depressed, you may feel like you don’t have an ounce of energy or motivation to tackle depression. Recovery, however, requires your active participation. Be willing to take the first step, even though it’s not easy. • Build your skills. Learn why you’re vulnerable to depression and specific ways to become more resilient by breaking unhealthy patterns of thought and behavior. Developing good coping
and relationship skills can reduce both the frequency and severity of depression episodes.
