ethpage High School senior Francisco Almanzar signed a National Letter of Intent on November 14th to play Division II baseball for Dominican College in the fall, where he was accepted on early admission. The catcher for the Bethpage Varsity Baseball team received not only an athletic scholarship, but an academic scholarship as well. The combined scholarships will cover most of his tuition. LICADD’s anger management services are approved by all courts, probation departments, and Child Protective Services. “The holidays are a difficult time for many people,” said LICADD Anger Management Program Coordinator Marcie Siciliano. “This workshop provides useful skills and resources to effectively manage the environmental stressors and anger triggers that surface during this season.” Participants are encouraged to continue their learning experience by enrolling in LICADD’s weekly Anger Management Series. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will host a full-day Anger Management Workshop on Saturday, December 21st, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the agency’s Mineola office. The workshop provides participants with practical steps to address their triggers and learn how to manage their frustration in stressful situations. This full-day workshop is in addition to the weekly sessions offered from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Mondays at the Ronkonkoma office and Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Mineola office. Classroom exercises and instructional materials are used to help guide participants in learning a variety of skills including stress management, communication training, anger management, empathy, and conflict resolution, as well as

WBAB’s ‘Fingers’ and escorted by numerous local fire department engines embarked on a 15-mile mission Sunday morning to deliver hundreds of toys to the young patients who anxiously awaited their arrival. Lee and Greg Sheridan, owners of Full Throttle Magazine, have organized this event for the past four

years in efforts to make the children’s stay in the hospital a little easier. Gifts and toys were collected during the publications Winter Wonderland event on December 4th, which was hosted at 89 North in Patchogue. This year they were joined by the Sons of Italia Motorcycle Club and several local Fire Departments.

A holiday tradition in Manhasset returns again as Despicable Me 2 plays for children and families in an old fashioned community movie night. The fun starts at 6:30 p.m. when the doors open at the Manhasset Firehouse on Bayview Avenue with the film starting at 7 p.m. This free movie night is a delightful tradition as the local PTA, Manhasset SEPTA

for special education and gifted/talented, shows the hit Despicable Me 2 then gives away the DVD to one lucky participant. Santa makes an appearance too with treats for all children. Many dress in cozy clothes, even pjs and slippers, and get comfortable with pillows, sleeping bags, and blankets while bringing snacks to enjoy. In years past,

children and their families took up nearly every space on the second floor of the Bayview Av firehouse. Popcorn is provided and local teens offer snacks and drinks being sold for convenience to attendees. One week. Seven days. One hundred sixty eight hours. (We won’t get into minutes and seconds – you get the idea.) This is precisely how much time remains before Christmas. And with the virtual countdown comes that age-old holiday anxiety, the mad rush to finish writing out the greeting cards, shopping for gifts, wrapping, cleaning, cooking, baking… whatever your traditions call for in the race to conjure that yearly sense of merriment. Right. The holiday spirit. That is what all the fuss

is about, after all. Lest we forget the reason for all the racing around, the endless “To Do” lists, the exorbitant credit card bills… all for a day or two of celebration with family and friends, neighbors and loved ones. Seems like an awful lot of effort doesn’t it? This is why, when everyone else is busy ripping down the Christmas decorations on December 26th, I say wait. Savor it a little longer. Extend the festivities. You put all that time and effort into preparing for the occasion – might as well enjoy it as long as you can.

(Note: All remnants of Santa Claus should be removed by July. No exceptions.) Of course, all of this is irrelevant to those who start their Christmas shopping in January and are finished decorating by Halloween. Seriously folks – enjoy one season, and one holiday, at a time. What’s the big rush? This time of year is not one long list to be accomplished in as little time as humanly possible; it is made up of moments to be cherished, memories to reflect upon and add to with each passing year. Take a deep breath, take lots of pictures – and enjoy.

Circus Tickets Gifted Dozens of Manhasset families have been gifted tickets to the Big Apple Circus courtesy of the local PTA for special education and gifted/talented. The organization provided 50 tickets to local families in their membership for the December 19th evening performance of Luminocity. The Big Apple Circus is celebrating its 35th year and has provided the tickets to Manhasset SEPTA as part of their community outreach. This is the fourth time the PTA has gifted tickets to the community including gifting special performances of the Circus of the Senses to the students of Manhasset

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Pinto announced that beginning Friday, December 13th, the Town will have free firewood available for Town residents. “Starting Friday, December 13th, and continuing every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through mid-March 2014, Town of Oyster Bay residents can come to the Town Highway yard, 150 Miller Place, Syosset, after 3 p.m. on Friday and between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, to pick up a trunkfull of cut, but not split, wood,” Councilman Pinto said. “No vehicles with commercial plates will be permitted.”

The damper must always remain open whenever the fire is lit in the fireplace, and either screening or glass doors should be used

to keep sparks from flying into the room.” The Councilman noted that many of the precautions regarding fireplaces also pertain to wood stoves, especially when it comes to keeping them clean and free of creosote. “Few things warm the body and soul during these cold winter months like a toasty fire,” Councilman Pinto commented. “So, pick up some free firewood, courtesy of the Town, and make sure your fireplace or wood stove is in good working order, so you can safely enjoy the special warmth that a fireplace or wood stove radiates.” For further information, call 516.677.5757.

When I was in kindergarten, I wanted to be a policeman. When I was in fourth grade, I dreamed of becoming a pro football player. In middle school, I wanted to be a businessman. Now, as I am supposed to be finalizing the college application process, I have realized that I have no idea what I want to be. This is undoubtably the most important decision I have had to make in my life. Unsurprisingly, it is also the most stressful. Combined with the already demanding Advanced Placement course load, I am also

juggling clubs, sports and now dozens of college applications. There are so many tasks on the checklist that I call my daily routine that it is hard to cram them all into a twentyfour hour time period. Being a student is a fulltime job. Sure, I don’t have to worry about bills, and I don’t have many major responsibilities; but sometimes the stress is too much. As much as I enjoy going to school and being as involved as I am, there comes a time when I just need a break. Thankfully, in just a few days it will be Christmas Vacation.

Over two weeks off with no responsibilities. By then, I will be all done applying to college. The ball will be in their court. At that point, there will be nothing I can do but wait and hope my dream school makes the right decision. Once Christmas Vacation rolls around, I won’t have to worry about anything. I will finally be able to focus on having a great senior year. There is plenty of time to discover what career is right for me. For now, I am content just being a dedicated student, and more importantly, a happy kid.

Each year, the Long Island Horticultural Society (LIHS) offers scholarships to Long Island college students enrolled full-time or parttime in a horticulture program. In 2014, the Society will offer two scholarships of $1,000 each. Founded in 1934, the LIHS promotes the study of horticulture on Long Island by helping to further the education of worthy students planning a career in the field. It’s usually team spirit that the Stony Brook University Men’s Basketball team brings to the court each game, but during a special holiday visit to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Monday, December 9th, there was a different type of spirit and cheer roaming the halls. The team took a break from practice to come mingle with some of the youngest Seawolves fans in the pediatric emergency department, and pediatric acute care unit. With

presents in hand, the players shot some hoops with these little patients, took photos and had some fun with the kids in the playroom. The team’s efforts brought exactly what they hoped for, smiling young faces and holiday joy. During the team’s visit, coach Steve Pikiell presented L. (NAPSI)—Adopting a pet, whether it’s a giant dog or tiny kitten, is a big decision that requires a lifelong commitment— but when you find the right fit, adopting a pet also provides a life full of love. For example, when Mayling Zhong and Chester Leung visited a PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend event, they knew there were many factors they needed to consider before adopting a pet. “We knew that our small apartment needed a small dog,” said Leung. The two met several dogs before stopping at Smokey. Just 4 months old, the terrierminiature pinscher mix was a little excitable in his crate when he arrived, as many puppies are. As the day went on, however, Smokey calmed down and seemed smart and eager to please. His fun-loving

personality (and small size) convinced Zhong to adopt him-she knew he would be the right fit for her and Leung. Within minutes, the couple was filling out the adoption paperwork and they were ready to welcome the new pup into their home. Pet Points To Ponder If you’re considering adoption, here are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Space: Do you live in an apartment or a house? Do you have a big backyard? Different types of dogs and cats require different amounts of exercise and space. Zhong and Leung knew they needed to take into consideration the size of their home as part of their decision to adopt. 2. Time: Decide how much time you can dedicate to caring for a dog or cat. Cats can be more independent and often require less time for daily exercise.

3. Children: Make sure you are aware of the pet’s temperament. A shelter worker may be able to say how a pet gets along with children. You might even consider creating a special area in your home just for your pet, so he has a safe place to go if children are running around the house. 4. Resources: Ensure that you have the appropriate resources to care for a pet. Creating a budget for things like food and veterinary care is a good place to start. Adoption is a commitment

Resident Registration Residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Adult Co-Ed Zumba, Yoga and Cardio Kickboxing Programs, according to Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia. The programs are open to Town residents 18 and older, and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The Zumba program starts on Wednesday, January 8th and will be held on Mondays, from 7 to 8 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. The Yoga program starts on Tuesday, January 7th will be conducted on Tuesdays from 8 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m. The Cardio Kickboxing class starts Friday, January 10th and will be held on Mondays from 8 to 9 p.m.
