Thanksgiving Feast
T
he entire student body and staff recently came together at Village Elementary for the school’s annual Thanksgiving Feast. Everyone was treated to a scrumptious meal that included turkey, mashed potatoes, corn bread and other traditional trimmings. The gymnasium was transformed with beautifully-set banquet tables and harvest-themed decorations, created by the fourth grade Art Club. Pictured are a few of the attendees.

Elementary schools around the Bethpage School District have been celebrating the holiday season with their annual winter concerts. Fifth-graders took the stage to show off
their musical talents, first for staff and fellow students as part of a day program, and later for their parents during an evening performance at the high school. At Charles Campagne Elementary
School, the concert featured performances by the band, orchestra, chorus and recorder ensemble. The groups sang traditional holiday favorites, in addition to some beginner classics.

One Of A Kind By: Jamie Lynn Ryan He was just a goldfish. But he was so much more than that, to me anyway. Yes, that’s right readers, dear Harry has passed away, gone off to swim with his pal Harvey in the great fishbowl in the sky. True, he was only with us (well, me, anyway) for two short months, but in that time, we formed a strong bond. Goldfish or not, Harry was my buddy, my companion, my pet… another life I was responsible for making as comfortable and cheery as one can possibly be, living in a plastic bubble and all.
Plus, he was special. This fish had a personality all his own. Maybe it was from crashing into the side of the bowl too often, but he was certainly one of a kind. Never before have I had a goldfish interact with the same degree of almost human qualities; whether it was eagerly watching me prepare dinner, flitting to and fro among the branches of “his” plant, or even cowering behind it on the dreaded “water change” days. And then, after he was safely returned to his home, coaxed out from between the stems with a generous pinch of fish flakes and some loving
attention, all was well in his world again. In the end, I’m not sure what led to Harry’s demise, but I know I did everything I possibly could for him. Maybe he missed Harvey; perhaps a fishbowl was never his destiny. Either way, I believe Harry has gone on to bigger and better things, swimming with all the other fishies, if you’ll pardon the pun, who have gone before him. I do hope he enjoyed his brief time as my adopted pet. I’ll miss ya Harry. There will never be another goldfish quite like you.
EVOLUTION
The inevitable journey of evolution guides us to enlightenment of hidden, or rather undiscovered, opportunities. Although this epidemic of unfamiliar findings brings us to the peak of the “ant hill,” anything that gets too tall will surely fall. When does simplicity regain the popularity and drive us back to the bottom of the hill? We cannot “undiscover” the new world, but we can rediscover the old one - and steer ourselves back to sanity, to chastity, before we crash and burn to the bottom with nothing but raw and blistered remains of what used to be victory. We are liable for the foreshadowing hostility that is forthcoming. Do we remain dependent on the illusion that is driving us to lunacy? Should we sew the blindfolds to our

own faces and trust the word of fraudulent command? In a world that emerged from ignorance and transpired to global sophistication, we sure are naive to think our achievements will not drive us to the ground. Times have changed, and it is impractical to think life will progress without discovery. But when these newfound portals take us to places that leave our original nature behind, we find ourselves deteriorating without even realizing it. There is nothing wrong with change; change is good. It is when we forget where we came from, where we started and where it all began, that we risk crashing and burning from achievement to collapse. It is when we strive too much for the future and forget about the past, or more importantly the
present, that we find ourselves falling into the unavoidable black hole of defeat. We must not avoid the fear inside of us that questions the meaning of life; otherwise we will fall into the intriguing fantasy that if we do not tend to our fears, they do not exist. They exist, and those fears must be the driving force to wisdom in this life. It is time to open our eyes and take responsibility for the drowning day that is ahead, unless we choose to prevent it. Time that we will never get back is ticking away, and we are letting it slip through our fingers. Choose simplicity, choose purity, and we will hopefully find the loophole to our now unchangeable future. It is up to us to be the new age of discovery - but not discovery of the future, discovery of the past.

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB
found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided
to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According
to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit
bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We
encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

Free Firewood Available The Town of Oyster Bay is currently offering free firewood for Town residents. Beginning Friday, December 12th, and continuing every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through March 15th, 2015, Town of Oyster Bay residents can visit the Town Highway yard, located at 150 Miller Place, Syosset, after 3 p.m. on Friday and between 7 a.m. and 4p.m. Saturday and Sunday, to receive a trunk-full of cut, but not split, wood. Please be aware that no vehicles
with commercial plates will be permitted. Any residents looking to pick up complimentary firewood should also consider safety precautions before activating a fireplace. Residents should remember to clean and inspect both the fireplace and chimney before the first use of the season in order to prevent any chimney fires from occurring. If there is a fire lit in the fireplace, the damper must remain open at all times with either a screen or glass
door implemented to keep sparks from flying into the room. Many of the precautions used when operating a fireplace should also be put in use when cleaning a wood stove. The Town of Oyster Bay’s Annual Holiday on Ice Show will be held this year on Saturday, December 20th, at 6 p.m. at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center. Students from the Town’s Ice Skating Program will be presenting a dazzling skating exhibition to celebrate the holiday season. Admission is free. The Holiday on Ice Show will also feature young skaters with Olympic aspirations and current and former national competitors including Long Island skaters, Darbie Burke and Griffin Schwab, 2015 Eastern Novice Pairs Champions. In addition to figure skating, there will be other holiday themed activities including an exhibition hockey game between the Elves and the Reindeer, which are two teams with players from the Town of Oyster Bay Tot Hockey program.
And the star of the season, Santa Claus, will make his annual visit to the Ice Skating Center. Santa will skate a lap or two around the rink and then will be available to visit with children and take pictures afterwards. The Ice Skating Center, which for the past five years was named as a “Best of Long Island” award winner, features a pro shop for shoppers seeking a gift for hockey fans on their lists. There is also a fireplace for visitors to spend a relaxing moment and perhaps enjoying refreshments from the snack bar. In keeping with this time of the year being “the season of giving,” those attending the show are asked to bring two nonperishable food items to the show, which will be collected by Island Harvest, an organization committed to ending hunger on Long Island.
In addition, the Town will also again take part in the “Holiday Mail for Heroes” Program. Holiday greeting cards will be available in the lobby for guests to fill out, which will be sent to our troops. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is located in Bethpage Community Park, at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. Due to the Holiday On Ice show, the public skating session at the Center, which is normally held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., will not be held that evening. However, the Town’s two outdoor rinks, located at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa and at Syosset-Woodbury Park will be open. School Gives Thanks The entire student body and staff recently came together at Village Elementary for the school’s annual Thanksgiving feast. Everyone was treated to a scrumptious meal that included turkey, mashed potatoes, corn bread and other traditional trimmings. The gymnasium
More than 80 students and 20 teacher volunteers participated in an afterschool reading program held at Hicksville Middle School in the Hicksville School District. The program, titled Hicksville Reads, was
comprised of a series of workshops designed to help students celebrate their love and appreciation for books. All middle school students were welcomed to attend the various workshops, which included writing synopses
was transformed with beautifully set banquet tables and harvest-themed decorations, created by the fourth grade art club. The kindergarteners proudly sported their handmade pilgrim hats and Native American headdresses, while all ages were happy to take part in the festive singing.
A very special thank you to committee chairpersons, Debra Ceglia, Susan Jung, Eleanor Larson, Evelyn O’Donnell and Judy Rudsky, for putting together such a wonderful event, and to the nearly 100 parent volunteers who graciously served at the feast. It was a lovely way to kickoff the winter holidays!

SCOPE Service Four longtime SCOPE employees were honored for their dedication, commitment and more than 85 years of cumulative service this December as part of the SCOPE Employee Recognition Program. SCOPE Education Services is a not-forprofit, private, voluntary organization permanently chartered by the New York State Board of Regents to provide services to school districts.
During the annual event, the Board of Directors commended Suzanne Raulli (Internal Controller – 30 years of service), Betty Westcott (Coordinator for Professional Development – 20 years of service), Beverly DeSanctis (Account Clerk/Student Accounts – 20 years of service) and Josephine Giuffrida (Field Trainer – 15 years of service) for their hard work and service to the organization. Josephine was presented
with a silver certificate, Beverly and Betty received gold certificates and Suzanne received a plaque. “Today we recognize these individuals for their many years of excellent service,” said Executive Director George L. Duffy. “They are tremendous employees, I thank them for their service and I am proud to recognize them individually for the years they have provided to SCOPE.”

PLAYING SANTA - Toys and gift cards that were collected during the Full Throttle Magazine Winter Wonderland event on December 3rd were donated to patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital during the publication’s 5th Annual Toy Run. Hundreds of Long Island motorcycle riders and fire engines from the Centereach Fire Department roared down Nicolls Road to come spread holiday cheer to the children and their families, many who will be spending the holiday season in the hospital. This year ‘Santa’ was hoisted up via Hook & Ladder to see some of the children that were not well enough to meet Jolly ol’ St. Nick in person. The magazine also raised over $5,000 in addition to the toys, which will support the new home of Stony Brook Children’s.
SPREADING HOLIDAY CHEER - 25 year-old country singer and Pretty Little Liars actress Lucy Hale visited patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Monday, December 8th. Lucy delivered toys that were collected at the MyCountry96.1 FM’s (JVC Broadcasting) 4th Annual Secret Holiday Show, signed autographs and took photos with the children. Lucy, along with MyCountry’s 96.1 FM’s Phathead and JVC Broadcasting’s Vice President Vic Latino visited the pediatric hematology/oncology unit at Stony Brook University Cancer Center and the pediatric units at the hospital and put big smiles on a lot of children’s faces.
