The 12th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive for Island Harvest, which took place on November 20, collected 3,157 turkeys, 28,000 pounds of food and raised more than $17,000 to date, to support Long Islanders experiencing food insecurity, an issue which is escalating resulting from the Coronavirus pandemic. For the first time, this year’s turkey drive was contactless to ensure that community residents and businesses were able to safely drop off their holiday donations. For those who were unable to make a donation to the drive, Bethpage Federal Credit Union has set up an online donation page, where monetary contributions can be made directly to Island Harvest. UrgentWay has the capacity to serve over 100 people a day at this Hicksville location, which is located at 120 Bethpage Road, Suite 309. Saladino Cautions Residents of Scam Donation Bins Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Lou Imbroto caution residents who leave donations in collection bins to make sure the organizations behind those bins have good intentions. Particularly during the holiday season, Town officials have witnessed a proliferation in illegally-placed bins asking residents to drop off clothing or toy donations. Many of these structures appear to be homemade, contain stencil lettering and no sign of legitimacy. “With the holiday season upon us, many people are looking for ways to help others, especially during this pandemic,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Unfortunately this time of year is also when we begin to see this particular type of scam. We want to make sure our residents are vigilant when it comes to making
donations, and to be sure they are contributing to a legitimate, well-intentioned organization.” While collections bins are not permitted in Town of Oyster Bay operated lots, some well-intentioned businesses that authorize donation bins may not be aware of some are fraudulent. Residents should be aware of the following warning signs: • Collection bins with no identification • Overflowing, nonmaintained donation bins • Donations being requested over the phone • Acknowledgement of a donation never made • Requests for personal identification, including social security number Town officials have removed these illegallyplaced bins in the past after learning that donations were allegedly being improperly collected and sold for profit.
Any residents who see these type of donation bins in their community in the Town of Oyster Bay should contact the Town’s Code Compliance Bureau at (516) 624-6200. “As we approach the holiday season, we want residents to be certain that donations made out of the goodness of their hearts are going to the intended place,” added Councilman Imbroto. “Overall, just be cautious and remain vigilant to protect yourself, protect your personal information and protect your wellintentioned donations.” To learn how charities spend donation monies, residents can visit charitynavigator.org or charitywatch.org. Hundreds of children on Long Island and throughout the region, many of them facing medical crises, will have their holiday season brightened this year thanks to the Unity Holiday All Stars toy drive, which collected more than 650 toys on Sunday, Dec. 6. With COVID-19 restricting crowds and gatherings, this year’s collection was a “driveby” drop-off, with local volunteers collecting
toys in a contactless pickup from donors’ cars. Donating families received to-go arts and crafts sets as a thank-you. The toys will be distributed to children in need through myFace, which supports children with craniofacial conditions; the NYU Oral Health Center for People with Disabilities; University Hospital in Brooklyn; and to Mepham High School in Bellmore; Bay Shore High School; and the Longwood
School District in Suffolk County. Giving Back in a Tasteful Way H.B. Mattlin Middle School in the PlainviewOld Bethpage Central School District will host its first ever virtual food drive. Mattlin students are creating hunger awareness posters, flyers, and videos promoting the drive. This community service activity will run until December 23, 2020. The food drive is in partnership with The Rudman Family Food Pantry, an organization the District has worked with in past years for the semi-annual 7th grade trips to the food pantry. “I’m thrilled that we can provide our students with a way to give back to the community in a safe way,” said Dr. Mary O’Meara, Superintendent of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. “Our students always
enjoy giving back to the community, and it’s wonderful to see that our teachers were able to think of an alternative and creative way to have our students continue that tradition.” “The students will create their own flyers and post them on social media giving the students a chance to be leaders and advocates for change in their communities,” said Susan Epstein, family and consumer science teacher at Mattlin Middle School and organizer of the virtual drive. This initiative will inspire and educate students on the local issue of hunger on Long Island. Students are encouraged to use social media as a tool to promote the innovative virtual food drive this
year. Students will also create survival gift bags for the seniors that are homebound due to the pandemic, which will be serviced by the Rudman Food Pantry. These gift bags will include handmade mask chains, jam, crackers, tea and more. WWII VETERAN FROM BETHPAGE HONORED ON 100TH BIRTHDAY - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand honored World War II veteran Bud Rosch of Bethpage on his 100th birthday. Bud is an American hero and a member of the Greatest Generation. He beat COVID-19 at the age of 99 and survived getting shot down by enemy fire during a mission targeting Italy in 1944. While landing safely in Allied territory, Bud was taken in by a pair of Italian women who nursed his wounded legs for a day. He went out and connected with an Allied convoy three days later and recuperated in a hospital for about a week before being HOLIDAY TOYS FOR CHILDREN IN NEED - More than 650 toys were donated sent back into the field. He went on many more missions before coming home and this year as part of the annual Unity Holiday All Stars toy drive for children in need settling with his late wife Elsie in Bethpage in 1950. Winter Yoga Classes at Hicksville Athletic Center Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson recently announced that residents seeking a low-impact and enjoyable fitness activity are encouraged take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Yoga Classes, which will be held in January and February. Classes are co-ed and open to individuals 18 years of age or older. “The Town is proud
to offer residents a variety of programs and services including these yoga classes which offer benefits to the mind, body and soul,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Yoga builds strength, increases general flexibility and is considered a great stress reliever. Beginning January 4th, Yoga Classes will run for 10-weeks on Sundays (9am-10am) at the Hicksville Athletic Center, Mondays (10am-11am) at the Hicksville Athletic Center, Tuesdays (8pm9pm) at the Hicksville Athletic Center, and Saturdays (9am-10am) at the Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. Registration takes place at the Hicksville Athletic
Center on Wednesday, December 16th (5:30pm – 9:30pm) and Thursday, December 17th (5:30pm – 9:30pm). The fee for residents is $60 and $70 for nonresidents. Please note that the schedule may be subject to change and residents are encouraged to inquire about special holiday scheduling. If a session is cancelled due to inclement weather,
a make-up session will be attempted. Mats will not be provided, so participants must bring their own Yoga mat. Participants should check with a physician before partaking in any physical fitness program. Due to COVID, class enrollment will be limited to allow for proper social distancing and temperatures will be checked upon arrival.
