old Spring Harbor Laboratory has been conducting DNA workshops with fifth-graders throughout the Syosset district. During a recent visit to South Grove Elementary School, CSHL educator Gregory Reilly taught students about the structure of a DNA molecule using a double helix model before leading them in the construction of their own models. Students reviewed the six parts of DNA and used worksheets to identify the different components.

For many, the holiday season is one filled with joy and laughter, but for Long Islanders facing financial insecurities, this time of year can be anything but. Each year, nonprofit agencies in both Nassau and Suffolk counties turn to United Way of Long Island seeking donations of toys, clothing, food, household items and volunteers to help make this holiday season a little happier for those in-need. United Way of Long Island has posted a Community Partner Holiday Wish List for those looking to give back and help their neighbors in-need. The generosity of Long Islanders never shines brighter than when they give the gift of hope to someone who may have none. There are nearly 30 Community Partners from East Meadow to East Hampton on the Holiday

The Countdown Begins By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week until Christmas, and I can honestly say that not only is my tree still standing in the middle of my living room undecorated, but I have barely scratched the surface of my gift shopping. And by barely, I mean I spent the majority of our annual Black Friday trek into the madness that is Roosevelt Field splurging on myself. To date, my list consists of a collection of names to buy for, but no corresponding “perfect” presents as of yet. I don’t know what it is this year. Thanksgiving came and went, and the transition into the official holiday season seemed to go well enough. But then… there it remained, stuck between my own haphazard shopping spree and

the massive process of wading through the unpacked boxes of decorations strewn about my apartment. Oh, and then the Christmas cards I decided to order arrived, to be added to the growing pile of things to be done. I suppose I should get them in the mail this week. Of course, I realize I’m not alone in this scenario. There are those who claim to have their holiday preparations completed by Thanksgiving weekend; but we all know this is highly unrealistic. Just one quick look around the neighborhood tells me that there are plenty of people in the same boat as me, with freshly cut trees strapped to the tops of their cars, and half-strung lights hanging from their rafters. And the stores. We all know

there are enough last minute shoppers to make Black Friday look like just your average day at the mall. Take the male shopper from last week’s column, throw in everyone else who – like me – just hasn’t had the wherewithal to get it together in the three weeks that have elapsed since the last piece of pumpkin pie was consumed and, there you have it. A society of procrastinators. It’s funny, since this is the so-called “most wonderful time of the year” that everyone looks forward to; yet all we hear is what a hassle it is to accomplish the long list of tasks associated with it. When do we stop and enjoy this magical season, exactly? January maybe? At this rate, I might be done with my Christmas shopping by then.

Student Spotlight A WITNESS TO HISTORY SUBMITTED BY: CATE DUNN, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Have you ever witnessed history? I have - my school was given a Historical Marker when it turned 90. My school, Fairfield Elementary, has been around for 90 years! Fairfield Elementary was originally called the Massapequa Avenue School. On October 27th, 2015, I witnessed history. I have learned many things about Fairfield Elementary, and the Massapequa Avenue School, that I didn’t know before. In 1925, the original Massapequa Avenue was completed and ready for students to attend. About 100 students attended daily classes, but throughout the years, many more students enrolled in the school. Did you know that my school was originally an apple orchard? Now, my school has changed a lot. Most grades in my school have about 100 people, while the old school had about 100 in total. I have learned the history of my school.

As well as my school being built in the 1920’s, I have also researched the Roaring 20’s, in particular, an invention. One thing invented in the 1920’s was bubblegum. In 1928, Walter Diemer invented bubblegum. Believe it or not, it was actually invented accidentally! Walter Diemer was playing around with new gum recipes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company factory. He ended up with the perfect batch. It was different, less sticky. Have you ever wondered why bubblegum is pink? It is pink because pink was the only color food dye that Walter Diemer had on hand. I love gum and I have it almost every day. Walter Diemer’s accident turned into a brilliant invention. In addition to learning about an invention in the 1920’s, we also learned about an event. The event I researched was the tri-

state tornado of 1925. The massive tornado struck the people of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The damage of the storm was estimated at 16.5 million dollars. This horrible disaster changed the lives of many. Many homes were destroyed. Almost 700 people were killed and 2,027 were injured. I have experienced Hurricane Sandy, another natural disaster. It changed the lives of many, including mine. The forecast was for showers and cooler temperatures, but what they didn’t know was a tornado was coming. The Roaring 20’s was a rewarding time. Although things were difficult sometimes, everything was worth it in the end. If my school was not built, I wouldn’t be going to Fairfield today. If gum was not invented, I would not be able to blow the delicious bubbles. The 1920’s was a time when many life-changing things happened.

Sounds of the Season Elementary schools around the Bethpage School District have been celebrating the holiday season with their annual winter concerts.

Fifth-graders took the stage to show off their musical talents, first for staff and fellow students as part of a day program, and later for their parents

during an evening performance at the high school. The groups sang traditional holiday favorites, in addition to some beginner classics.

The Art League of Long Island invites artists from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, and Queens to submit entries to the upcoming juried competition “Motion in Art and Art in Motion” showing in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery March 28th through April 24th, 2016. Deadline to submit application is February 16th, 2016. The Art League invites artists to submit their visual interpretation of motion. An art work may incorporate actual motion; that is, the artwork itself moves in some way. Kinetic art is live movement that displays actual motion when we view it. Well Tour

The Bethpage Water District (BWD) Board of Commissioners Gary S. Bretton, William J. Ellinger and John R. Sullivan were joined by members of the community, Bethpage Union Free School District students, school officials including Superintendent Terrence Clark and local elected officials Saturday, December 5th, to officially introduce the newest and ninth well to the District’s system. The pump station will serve approximately 33,000 residents and local businesses three million gallons of water daily from a location outside the boundaries of the Northrop Grumman plume. “We are very grateful to

live in a community where our neighbors continue to show their support and commitment to learning about our water supply,” said William J. Ellinger, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners. “We are dedicated to keeping our community informed and answering any questions they may have. With the community’s help, we can safeguard our water for the future.” Local elected officials including New York State Senator Kemp Hannon, New York State Assemblyman Michael Montesano, Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker, Nassau County Legislator Laura Schaefer and Town of Oyster

Dictionary Donation

Bay Councilman Joseph Pinto helped Bethpage Water District Commissioners, Superintendent Michael Boufis and Secretary to the Board Sal Greco cut a ribbon to signify the completion of the new well located on South Park Drive in Old Bethpage. Superintendent Michael Boufis guided students from Charles Campagne Elementary School, Kramer Lane Elementary School and Central Boulevard Elementary School, residents and elected officials around the pump station, explaining how it functions and provides the highest quality of water possible to the community each day.

Third-grade students throughout the Bethpage School District were treated to a special surprise at the district’s annual Read to Achieve at Bethpage High School. The event, which was a pep rally for reading, served as the venue for the Lions Club of PlainviewBethpage to distribute

its annual donation of a dictionary to each student. Lions Club President George Hannau was on site for the distribution. The Dictionary Project provides an opportunity for students to expand their vocabulary while aiding teachers in their goal to see all of their students finish the school year as

and Chanda Bell to students. The elf - situated in a different spot of the building each day and figuratively watching over all students and teachers complements the school’s Lee-O’s Laws and bucketfilling programs, both of which also encourage good behavior. The elf will have a new message to relay to students every day, such as walking quietly in the hallway, making a new

friend or exhibiting an act of kindness. If the good behavior continues throughout December, the elf will come to life and distribute rewards to all students at the end of the month. The Lee Avenue Elf is designed to stress the importance of being rule followers, good listeners and kind citizens always…especially during the holiday season.

Inspiring Good Behavior During the holiday season, an elf has been making its way around Lee Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public Schools District as part of an effort to encourage good behavior. The idea of the Lee Avenue Elf was explained by Principal Stephanie Stam at a special assembly, which also featured her reading The Elf on the Shelf by Carol Aebersold

good writers, active readers and creative thinkers. This is the fourth year the dictionaries, which also serve as almanacs, were distributed by the Lions Club.

A pair of Nassau BOCES Barry Tech students earned distinction recently as elected officials to the renowned career and technical student organization SkillsUSA. Plumbing student Jack Shea of the Lynbrook UFSD was elected as Area 6 Vice President and Nurse Assisting student Michenka Juin of the Baldwin UFSD was elected as Historian in the New York state service organization. industry professionals to provide programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education, with the goal of creating a skilled workforce. In addition to fulfilling their roles as state officers in the organization, which boasts a national membership of about 300,000 students and advisers, Jack and Michenka helped train the next generation of local SkillsUSA officers at the 2015 New York State Leadership Conference, held in Syracuse recently.

“Being a part of SkillsUSA gave me the confidence that I was lacking before,” says Jack. “I could never speak in front of a group of people before, and now I’m speaking in front of hundreds of people, thanks to the leadership training.” “SkillsUSA has taught me so much. Not only has it helped me with my professional career, but also as a person,” says Michenka. “It helped me get in touch with myself, and I can now say that I am a better person because of the experience.” Both students credit Nassau BOCES Barry Tech for allowing them to thrive. “Barry Tech has really taught me a lot and helped me prepare for the work world,” says Jack. “It’s very hands-on and the skills I’m learning will really give me a jump start for my career.” “Being at Barry Tech has been very beneficial for me. I’m learning more than I could elsewhere,” says Michenka. “The hands-on experience is so valuable. I get to go to nursing homes and work with the patients. I’m learning to feed the patients, and I’m building special bonds with them.”

The Little Tree

Send Us Your Best Pics To Be Featured

By: Alexandra H. Rodrigues, Massapequa The little blue spruce spread its twigs. To be noticed, it tried many tricks. With hatchets, workers chopped down all Of the evergreens that had grown tall. They took away all the towering trees. Ignored the little one that hardly Reached above their knees. To decorate houses and halls for X-mas The trees were meant. All over different cities they were sent. Proudly, with their needles raised, The wind their “good-bye” to the blue spruce traced. The grounds yawned where the trees had been. Only the unwanted little spruce was seen. Snow soon after began to fall; The little tree dreamt of being strong and tall. He knew that the trees that had left him Would shine and twinkle when the day got dim.

On the day before X-mas, a father and son For a walk in the snow covered woods had gone. “Father, oh father, come and see. Here is a beautiful little X-mas tree!” The child exclaimed and stroked the tree. “This is just the right size for me!” With a shovel, the two cut carefully loose The frosty earth around the spruce. They took it to their modest home. To be honored and cherished it had come.

“Peaceful at Argyle Lake” Photo by: Denise M. Poveromo, Copiague

The holidays over, soon one could see In front of the houses many a dried out tree. The spruce, however, was given a special spot On its owner’s well cared for garden lot. Each year, while the boy and the spruce did grow, A star was attached and glowed thru the snow.

Feasts of the Season By: Alexandra H. Rodrigues, Massapequa

The Holidays are being celebrated In ever so varied a shape and way. Little more is there to say. When X-mas or Hanukkah the heart does warm What matters to you, let that be your norm. To cheer and sanction what is dear to us Despite all the glitter and all the fuss Shall be the purpose of this season True belief will excel all rhyme or reason. Have a Happy! Be Happy! Let’s make each other Happy.

BE MORE POSITIVE, HAPPY, HEALTHY & SMART

AVAILABLE AT AMAZON AND BOOKSTORES NEAR YOU

That is what you will learn by reading, Positivity! Unlike other books regarding happiness, this book builds a foundation on being smarter, obtaining the skills necessary toward gainful employment and managing money successfully. How can a person be happy if they do not have a good job, cannot give a good speech and cannot invest wisely? In the highly competitive world in which we live, a foundation must be built that makes people happy and healthy. The foundation starts with positive thinking and a healthy lifestyle but it should be coupled with continuing education and prowess in accumulating and managing money. This answers the question, how can a person be happy in today’s world. “Reading Positivity is a game changer for every reader. The unique wisdom and philosophy of life that Harry Edelson shares proves that life can be easy and joyful for everyone. Imagine a world if seven billion people lived by Positivity! Thank you for sharing this masterpiece. Harry Edelson has figured out true keys to a good life – which is the one common denominator everyone wants. And I know, because I’ve interviewed over 400 of the top CEOs, and I see a lot of wisdom and very successful people…and Harry has truly figured it out. What a gift you offer in this book.” ROBERT REISS, HOST & CEO, THE CEO SHOW “As Benjamin Franklin said: ‘An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.’ The wisdom in Harry Edelson’s book is like finding a great investment. It continues to grow in value and will pay dividends throughout your life. This is the same philosophy that the brilliant investor, George Soros, has advocated through his Open Society Foundations where I served as a Trustee for many years” JOHN W. ALLEN, INT’L INVESTMENT BANKER AND CHAIRMAN OF GREATER CHINA CORP “The interesting thing about Harry Edelson is that he is usually the smartest guy in the room and what is amazing, the happiest guy in the room. His book tells it all and can be easily absorbed by adults and students alike.” ELIZABETH KABLER, TRUSTEE, ANNENBERG FOUNDATION TRUST AT SUNNYLANDS, FOUNDER, NY CENTER FOR LIVING
