Robin Shum, a member of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County, was recently selected by Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) to receive one of eight $500 scholarships offered to Girl Scouts nationwide. GSUSA’s “Girl Scout Challenge” asked girls throughout the country to submit ways in which they are building a better world for the chance to win. Robin was selected for her Girl Scout Gold Award project entitled, “Cosmetic Awareness.” As part of the project Robin researched the toxins and carcinogens
found in cosmetics and other products such as lotions and body wash. “Robin earned this recognition with all of the hard work and creativity she put into this project, and we are incredibly proud of her,” said Girl Scouts of Nassau County CEO Donna Ceravolo. “Robin spent more than 80 hours in the planning, execution and presentation of her research that truly makes a difference in the world. We congratulate her for serving as a role model for her fellow Girl Scouts and for representing our
Council in such a positive way.” As part of her research, Robin learned that 60% of what is applied to the skin is absorbed into the bloodstream and that on average a person applies 12 cosmetics a day. She then developed a presentation based on her findings to raise awareness about which ingredients in cosmetics to avoid. She presented at her local middle school, high school and local synagogue where people of mixed ages learned how to read labels to lead healthier lives. Robin also created a website so people can get information on this topic. The GSUSA”s “Girl Scout Challenge” helps to showcase the ways in which Girl Scouts across the country are making positive impacts on the world. The contest aims to not only congratulate the great work being done, but also inspire others to do the same. The contest is open all current Girl Scouts and alumnae of the past five years. The applicants are asked to submit a “selfie” and explain how they are building a better world. A applicant is chosen to receive a $500 scholarship sponsored by Metlife Foundation each week beginning November 8th until December 27th. Career Training Course Nassau Community College’s Center for Workforce Development, in partnership with the Bank of America and the IME Becas Program - through the Mexican Consulate - announced at a press conference today that it will offer a free careertraining course specifically designed to prepare Latino immigrants and first-
generation Americans in the hospitality industry to improve their career prospects and help move them into the middle class. Students will be offered a free 147-hour instructional course at NCC to improve their language, math, computer, customer service and hospitality skills. This will enable them to advance
up the career ladder in the hospitality industry. Students who successfully complete the 147 hours of free classroom instruction will receive a Certificate of Completion, and will be eligible to sit for the SafeServe® exam to earn national certification in food handling.

My Grownup Christmas List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
When I was little, all I ever wanted for Christmas was a puppy. Every single year, the same thing. When that didn’t happen, I switched to a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey & Minnie Mouse.” Lofty goals for a child, to be sure… but nothing a visit to a department store Santa, list of wishes in hand, couldn’t fix. As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff. I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.
Eventually, the clothes and accessories and latest trends were more appreciated, complemented with stocking stuffers of CDs and DVDs and maybe even a pair of tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list. And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on
their own special selection. Gone is the element of surprise, of wonderment, of eager anticipation of what might appear under the tree on Christmas morning. And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age. This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

The Long Island Fight for Charity, one of Long Island’s largest and most anticipated annual networking events and fund raisers to support local charities, held its 13th Main Event on November 21st. The event fight card listed 9 bouts featuring 18 business professionals who volunteered to train to be Charity Boxers. They went toe-to-toe with opponents in the boxing ring to the cheers of a sold-out crowd. There is no other charity event like this anywhere in the country. properly trained and qualified workers to our local hospitality industries here on Long Island and beyond. Partnering with community-oriented Bank of America, and the Mexican Consulate, in conjunction with the IME Becas Program, will provide a critical hand-up to members of our Latino community to compete and prosper in the evergrowing hospitality industry here on Long Island,” said Dr. W. Bob Isaksen concurred. “Education paves the way for a thriving community, and Nassau Community College’s partnership with Bank of America, the Mexican Consulate and the IME Becas Program will help hospitality workers on Long Island achieve financial and educational success. VETS DAY CEREMONY - A Veterans Day Ceremony was recently held at the Wantagh American Legion Post #1273 located on Park Avenue. The Massapequa Business Network recently enjoyed its 4th annual Holiday Spectacular Fair, sponsored by Dairy Queen Massapequa. It was held at the American Legion Post 1066 in Massapequa, and there were more than 500 shoppers in attendance throughout the day, with 25 vendors representing local businesses. The event was a huge success, and Massapequa Business Network raised $1,100 for YES Community
Counseling Center, a community-based, nonprofit organization that has been serving the residents of southeastern Nassau County since 1977. Some of the services they provide include school-based social work, counseling, drug/ alcohol treatment, and a wide variety of other services. They have two locations, one right in Massapequa and one in Levittown. Mark Wenzel (Assistant Director) from YES was on
hand to receive the check at the presentation. Massapequa Business Network is a local business organization, whose mission is to promote, support and generate business for local merchants and small business owners. air-conditioning (HVAC) system. A restricted cabin air filter can mean musty odors in the vehicle and impair airflow in the HVAC system, possibly causing interior heating and cooling problems. Over time, the heater and air conditioner may also become damaged by corrosion. Cabin air filters should not be cleaned and reinstalled. Instead, they should be replaced every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, or per the owner’s manual. Most filters are accessible through a panel in the HVAC housing, which may be under the hood or in the interior of the car. Holiday on Ice Show The Town of Oyster Bay’s Annual Holiday on Ice Show will be held on Saturday, December 17th, starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center. Students from the Town’s Ice Skating Program will present a captivating skating exhibition to celebrate the holiday season. Admission is free. This highly anticipated event has become a holiday tradition for many Town residents and is truly a special evening of family fun. The students in the Town’s ice skating program are amazingly talented and are sure to entertain the audience. The Holiday on Ice Show will also feature other highly accomplished skaters who are sure to dazzle the audience with their grace and skill. In addition to figure skating, there will be other holiday themed activities including an exhibition hockey game between the Elves and the Reindeer, which are two teams with
players from the Town of Oyster Bay Tot Hockey program. And the star of the season, Santa Claus, will make his annual visit to the Ice Skating Center. Santa will skate a lap or two around the rink and then will be available to visit with children and take pictures afterwards. The Holiday on Ice Show has become a big attraction at the Town’s Ice Skating Center. The Ice Skating Center, which for many years has been named as “A Best of Long Island” award winner, features a pro shop for shoppers seeking a gift for hockey players and figure skaters on their lists. There is also a fireplace for visitors to spend a relaxing moment and perhaps enjoy refreshments from the snack bar. This is a great family holiday event, and admission is free. In keeping with this time of the year being “the season of giving,” those attending the show are asked to bring two non-
perishable food items, which will be collected by Island Harvest, an organization committed to ending hunger on Long Island. In addition, the Town will also again take part in the “Holiday Mail for Heroes” Program. Holiday greeting cards will be available in the lobby for guests to fill out, which will be sent to our troops. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is located in Bethpage Community Park, at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. Due to the Holiday on Ice Show, the public skating sessions at the Center, which are normally held from 1 to 3 p.m. and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., will be cancelled that evening. However, the Town’s two outdoor rinks, located at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa and at Syosset-Woodbury Park will be open. Visit www. oysterbaytown.com for more information.
COATS FOR KIDS - Legislator Rose Marie Walker was pleased to help out at the 26th Annual Knights of Pythias Coat for Kids Drive held at John H. West Elementary school. The Legislator pitched in to help load the bags into vehicles for distribution. Sponsored by the Plainedge Council of PTAs, this year more than 1,500 coats were collected, sorted, and made ready for distribution by local organizations, including the Knights of Pythias. These organizations will over distribution to people in need.
Helping through the Holidays Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph D. Muscarella announced that a special drive called “Helping through the Holidays,” will be launched at all three of the Town’s ice skating facilities. During the last week of 2016, visitors to Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating facilities are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to Town rinks to support Island Harvest Food Bank in its mission to end hunger on Long Island. This time of the year is called ‘The season of giving,’ and residents are asked to keep that spirit all the way through to New Year’s Day. The last week of the year is usually one of the busiest weeks at our highly acclaimed ice
skating facilities as family and friends get together for some winter fun. It’s a perfect time to lace up the skates and it presents a real opportunity to help Island Harvest feed Long Islanders who are less fortunate. Just one or two items from each visitor would make a huge difference. Randi Shubin Dresner, President and CEO of Island Harvest, said the Town of Oyster Bay has been an outstanding partner in the battle against hunger on Long Island. “We are so grateful for the hard work and determination of Town employees and the kindness of Town of Oyster Bay residents who generously have donated so much food at Town events,” Dresner said. “Island Harvest greatly

Identity Thieves Can Steal Your Financial Stability (NAPSI)—All your hard work to become financially stable can unravel if you become a victim of identity theft. Identity theft occurs when someone steals personal information such as your Social Security number, birth date or mother’s maiden name. Many people don’t know they’ve been victimized until a collection agency comes knocking on their door. Identity theft is a growing problem but there are steps you can take to prevent it. • Never give out personal information over the phone, on the Internet or through the mail unless you initiate the transaction or know whom you’re dealing with. • Don’t reveal any personal information before you find out how it will be used and shared with others. When someone requests your
Social Security number, ask if you can provide alternate information. At medical offices, use an identifier that is not your Social Security number. • Ensure the passwords to your credit card, bank, phone and all other online accounts aren’t easily available and can’t easily be guessed. Avoid using obvious information such as your birth date, digits in your Social Security number or your mother’s maiden name. Change your passwords periodically, particularly those associated with financial accounts. • Keep items with personal information in a safe place, such as a locked storage device or password-protected electronic file. Tear up or shred all unnecessary papers containing Social Security numbers, account numbers and birth dates before discarding them so “dumpster divers” can’t
retrieve them. • Protect your mail. Keep your eyes open for bills and statements. If you think one of your statements is missing, quickly call that company to let it know. Take outgoing mail to a postal mailbox or the post office. If your mail suddenly stops, go to the post office. Thieves sometimes submit change of address forms to divert mail to their address. • Check your bank and credit card account activity promptly upon receipt of a written statement. Gift of Music Prior to the December 7th public meeting of the board of education, the MacArthur High School Winter Wind Ensemble shared the gift of music with a performance of holiday tunes for trustees, administrators and members of the Levittown
community. Under the direction of Joseph Romano, the Winter Wind Ensemble is an extracurricular group comprised of MacArthur High School’s most talented woodwind musicians. The ensemble begins practicing in the

Sensational Season At its December 7th board of education meeting, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District honored the sensational 2016 season of the Sanford H. Calhoun Boys Soccer squad. “After finishing in first place in their conference, the Colts entered the playoffs as the No. 3 seed,” board trustee Wendy Gargiulo said ahead of the award presentation. “The Colts went on to defeat Oceanside 2-1 in the quarterfinals with a golden
goal in overtime; they then beat Hicksville 2-1 in the semifinals to avenge one of the team’s only two losses of the season up until then.” Calhoun then became county champions with an overtime golden goal win over No. 1 seed, Massapequa, and then went on to defeat Suffolk soccer dynasty Brentwood, 3-2, in the Long Island Championship with yet another overtime golden goal. The season culminated in a trip to
the State Final Four in Middletown. The Colts played great but lost to eventual champion New Rochelle by the score of 4-3, this time on the wrong end of a golden goal in overtime. “As amazing as the success of this year’s team, it was the friendships and good times shared that made it truly special,” Gargiulo said. “It was a season that none will ever forget.”
Spreading Holiday Cheer Members of the Sanford H. Calhoun High School Breakfast Club in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently spread holiday cheer for those at the Jewel Quinn Senior Center. On December 7th, the students arrived at the center, which shares a campus with the district’s administration building to sing holiday carols, made edible crafts, create holiday cards for veterans and more.
“We wanted to do something to give back to the community,” said club officer Emily Haldas. The families of Breakfast Club members donated supplies, including an edible snowman craft, which was quite popular with the senior center members. “This is a service learning opportunity for our students to share joy and laughter together with the elderly,” said special education teacher and club
adviser Wendy Simson. The Breakfast Club is a social and diverse club that includes both general education and special needs students that promotes positive and personal interactions. “We plan on returning in the future to celebrate other holidays here, so that more members of the Breakfast Club have this experience as well,” said club officer Kate Andrews, who helped plan the holiday-themed event.

Every athletic squad in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District has been declared a Scholar Athlete team for the fall 2016 season by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
To earn this distinction, teams must earn a 90 percent grade-point average or higher. “Student-athletes in Bellmore-Merrick continue their commitment to academics, as well as athletics,” said
