Anthony Scotto, one of Long Island’s most successful entrepreneurs, understands more than just business – he understands the importance of giving. Mr. Scotto immigrated to the United States from a ﬁshing village in Monte di Procida, Italy when he was eighteen years old. Anthony Scotto’s newest business venture, One North, a Mediterranean style restaurant located at the old Maine Maid Inn in Jericho, is nothing less than exquisite. This historical building sat empty for just about 10 years when, ﬁnally, local residents reached out to Mr. Scotto to ask if he was interested in renovating the building and opening a new business there. Two and a half years later, Mr. Scotto had it completely revamped, and it now looks better than ever! One North offers a unique and tasteful menu, which Mr.

Scotto assisted in creating. It has a modern décor, which was inspired by European coastal living. A mozzarella bar creates a cozy setting near the kitchen; beautiful private event rooms are available to rent out; and you’ll never be left cold on their patio, which holds multiple heaters and a luxurious ﬁreplace. In the spirit of giving, Anthony Scotto donated $75,000 from his ﬁrst week in business at the new location to the following charitable organizations: Heroes To Heroes Foundation, Cohen Children’s Medical Center and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. He knows what it means to struggle and feels that everyone has a duty to help the less fortunate. It was nothing less than obvious, upon speaking about helping those in need with Mr. Scotto, that he truly has a generous heart. The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s John F. Kennedy High School Kindness Committee recently introduced an innovative way for students to

reflect and give thanks for the previous year this Thanksgiving - the Grateful Tree. Students participated by writing about aspects of their lives for which they

are thankful onto paper leaves and attaching those notes to the Grateful Tree, hung prominently in the school’s halls. In a span of merely a few days, the Grateful Tree quickly grew to feature several hundred personal notes from students about things in their lives for which they are thankful. The Grateful Tree is just one facet of the District’s ongoing No Place for Hate initiative, which promotes positivity and temperance throughout the District. The campaign is intended to give students an opportunity to recognize the good aspects of their lives, the influential people around them and the importance of treating others with respect.

Christmas Conundrums And just like that, it’s less than two weeks until Christmas. No sooner did I unpack my infamous Christmas closet and brace myself for the avalanche of décor which poured forth, then I must now begin to contemplate how in the world I’m going to ﬁt everything back where I found it. ’Tis the season, indeed, short as it may be. I’m sure I am not alone in discovering that, upon surveying the annual spread of lights and battery-operated trinkets, there are always some casualties carried over from the previous holiday season lights that no longer twinkle, animated knick knacks that have become somewhat more stationary, garland that was torn by the wind… whatever the case may be. This year, remembering I had taken my remaining lights and

tossed them in the trash in frustration somewhere between Christmas ’16 and the dropping of the ball in Times Square, I knew I was in the market for replacements. Of course, not having measured prior to heading to the store, I was forced to guess at what might ﬁt. Once home, I found that A) the strand of lights barely stretched across the window frame, necessitating an extension cord to reach the outlet; B) the multi-colored assortment I had chosen came with a fun bonus feature, a “twinkling” variation leaving me constantly squinting to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating; and C) the best part of all, the frequent sound of the entire strand falling from the top of the window, as a few strategically placed pieces of

tape gave way. Every. Single. Night. On the hour, at least. How many days until Christmas? And with that, I have yet to begin the process of shopping, planning the Christmas Eve menu, or mailing out my photo card creations - another debacle if ever there was one. Sufﬁce to say, in my haste to choose pictures and arrange them in the template I had selected, I neglected to “flip” the card over and notice it was, in fact, a postcard. How very traditional. Season’s Greetings from my apartment, where Christmas rarely goes off without a hitch, the lights never stop blinking, and the closet door may indeed fall off its hinges before the ﬁnal present is wrapped. Darn, wrapping paper.

Fifteen of Syosset High School’s most distinguished studentathletes recently signed National Letters of Intent to play their respective sports at the collegiate level during a ceremony before family, faculty and coaches. Syosset Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Drew Cronin and boys varsity lacrosse coach John Calabria hosted this fall’s National Commitment Day in the school library, where students, wearing a cap from their school of choice, signed their respective letters. The National Letter of Intent is a binding agreement between a prospective studentathlete and a postsecondary institution. The student agrees to attend the school full time and the school agrees to provide a ﬁnancial scholarship for at least one academic year.

Holiday On Ice Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced a free Holiday on Ice Show will take place on Saturday, December 16th, starting at 4:30 p.m., at the Town’s Ice Skating Center located in Bethpage Community Park, 1000 Stewart Avenue. Admission to the show is free. Skating students,

including those from the Town’s Ice Skating Program, will perform an enchanting, holiday season themed skating exhibition. “This special holiday season performance is free and open to the public for their enjoyment,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Holiday on Ice provides local skaters a special

chance to showcase their hard work and talents. We’ve got a great lineup of entertainment this year that I am sure will dazzle all those in attendance!” In keeping with this time of the year being “the season of giving,” and continuing the Town’s long-standing commitment to helping those less fortunate,

Multi-platinum songwriter and singer Emily Warren, who is best known for the songs she has written for high-proﬁle pop artists, including: The Chainsmokers, Frenship, Sean Paul, Melanie Martinez and Shawn Mendes was a special guest at Nassau BOCES. She spoke with high school students from around New York state as part of the Career Conversations program. Emily recently wrapped up a national tour with The Chainsmokers and has now launched a solo career with the release of “Hurt By You,” “Something to Hold Onto,” and “Poking Holes.” She will be appearing with The Chainsmokers at the Jingle Ball in Madison Square Garden in December 2017. “I just wanted to give back to students who aspire to be songwriters. I wish I had somebody to mentor me when I was in high school. I started writing songs in 5th grade. It was an outlet for me,” said Ms. Warren. The one-hour distance

learning session was hosted by Nassau BOCES staff and eleven high school classes from around New York State participated. Not only did the students have the opportunity to hear Ms. Warren, but they were also able to ask questions as part of this interactive session. “We were very fortunate to have Ms. Warren as our guest speaker,” said Regina Moraitis, Program Coordinator of Nassau BOCES Distance Education Services. “The students had an opportunity to hear ﬁrst-hand what it takes to become a professional singer and songwriter as well as gain insight into what life is like in the music industry.” The Distance Learning program features virtual career conversations throughout the year and have been hosted by bio-chemists, veterinarians, pilots and more. These programs allow students to interact and learn from a wide variety of professionals working in their chosen ﬁelds.

Signs Of Unsafe Driving In Older Adults (NAPSI)—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that there are more than 38 million drivers age 65 and older. Age is not the only factor that can impact driving abilities, but it is an important one. There is evidence that most people experience age-related declines in physical and mental abilities. These changes—which can affect everything from vision to how quickly you can make decisions—influence how well you can drive. They can also be difficult to address for yourself or with older people you know, since driving often represents freedom, independence and control. But transitioning from driving doesn’t mean you have to lose these things. Your health care providers or Area Agency on Aging (www.eldercare. gov) can point you toward a range of transportation alternatives in the community. The first step toward finding those tools is recognizing when you might need them. Signs that an Older Adult’s Driving Skills Need Testing So how do you know whether you or an older adult you know is developing difficulties as a driver? Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home ﬁres and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill. Have at least two ways to escape from every room. Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance

where family members can meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes. Conduct practice drills at least twice a year. 2. Install and maintain smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home ﬁre. Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed.

Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one.
