Toys For Tots Collection Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone joined with Town Councilman Thomas P. Hand to announce the kick-off of this year’s “Toys for Tots” Collection Drive, which will run through December 12th, in an effort to collect new, unwrapped toys to be used as gifts for children throughout the community. “Under the direction of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, the Toys for Tots Drive follows a mission to help ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness,”
Councilman Hand said. “By helping those in need experience the wonderful embrace of the holiday season, contributor’s will get to play an active role in bringing happiness to one of our nation’s most valuable resources for the future, our children,” Councilman Macagnone said. Santa’s Mailboxes Have Arrived Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced that children can send their ‘holiday wish list’ directly to Old St. Nick at the North Pole through a special network of Santa’s Mailboxes which arrived in Town facilities from the North Pole. Mailboxes will accept letters now through Monday, December 16th. The Town of Oyster
Bay will forward letters to Santa at the North Pole. Letters received by Monday, December 16th with a legible name and return address will be answered by Santa before the holiday. Stay Smart This Holiday Season ‘Tis the season of holiday parties and special events. The festive atmosphere and free food and drinks can make it very tempting to forsake your healthy eating plan! Try these tips to celebrate the season without overdoing it. • Keep portions in check. Put less on your plate and pass on that second helping. Split appetizers, entrees and desserts with others. Use a smaller plate when possible so a small serving will look like more. • Bring a dish. If the event is a potluck (or even if not), offer to contribute a lighter option. That way, you’ll have at least one
healthy choice. • Go easy. Avoid loading up on foods that are fried, buttered or have a lot of cheese or cream. Look for fruit, veggies and dip, whole grains and baked or grilled items. • Be prepared. Have a healthy, high-protein, high-fiber meal or snack before you go to the event. If you’re not hungry it will be easier to avoid overeating. • Go slow if you drink alcohol. Drinking plenty of water between drinks will quench your thirst and fill you up so you’ll be less likely to overindulge. • Treat yourself. Try
bite-sized tastes or split portions of desserts, candy and other treats. Let yourself enjoy some of the indulgences of the season without overdoing it. • Balance is the key. For example, if dinner is going to be a feast, opt for a lighter lunch. • Eat smart at holiday events. They often serve up extra helpings of less-thanhealthy foods. If you’re a guest, eat a healthy snack before you go. If you’re the host, challenge yourself to offer some delicious healthier options using our recipes and cooking tips.
Free ‘Holiday On Ice’ Show Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board are pleased to announce the Annual ‘Holiday on Ice’ Show will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 21st at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located in Bethpage Community Park, 1001 Stewart Avenue. Admission to the show is free. Students from the Town’s Ice Skating Program will perform an enchanting, holidaythemed skating exhibition and the evening includes an exhibition hockey game between the Elves and the Reindeer, which are two teams comprised of players from the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey program. Santa Claus is scheduled to visit with children and take photographs after the show. “This special holiday performance is an annual
tradition for many families and children across the Town,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The show provides an opportunity for participants in the Town’s ice skating program to showcase the hard work they’ve put into training all year. Join us on December 21st, as the performance is sure to dazzle all those in attendance!” In the spirit of “the season of giving,” attendees are asked to bring two non-perishable food items for donation to Island Harvest, an organization committed to ending hunger on Long Island. Attendees are also welcome to bring a new, unwrapped toy for donation to the United States Marines ‘Toys for Tots’ Collection Drive which benefits local children throughout the community. ‘Holiday on Ice’ performance attendees will also be offered an
opportunity to take part in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program, which offers residents the opportunity to fill out free holiday greeting cards, available in the lobby, for delivery to troops in the United States Armed Forces stationed in the homeland and around the globe. Due to the ‘Holiday on Ice’ show, the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center’s regularly scheduled public skating sessions slated for 1pm to 3 pm and 3:30 pm to 5:30pm, will be cancelled on December 21st. However, the Town’s two outdoor rinks, located at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa and at SyossetWoodbury Park will be open for visitors. Laughing And Loving Poetry Lee Avenue School in Hicksville recently welcomed children’s author David Greenberg, who delivered an assembly filled with tongue twisters and lighthearted jokes that covered a myriad of topics familiar to kids. Greenberg, a native of
Brooklyn and later Great Neck, gave an engaging presentation in the school gymnasium, joking about teachers, parents and even pets. He had students laughing and reciting some funny poetry, while also providing them with several fun ideas to write
about on their own. Some of Greenberg’s more popular books include “Inspire the Desire for Writing” (volumes I and II), “Super Silly School Poems” and “The Great School Lunch Rebellion.”

The Hicksville community’s senior citizens were once again honored with an afternoon filled with food, fun and plenty of entertainment provided by the district’s fine arts department. Hicksville High School hosted the district’s 28th annual Fall Senior Citizen Luncheon on Nov. 8. Members of the school’s National Honor Society volunteered to serve the hors d’oeuvres during cocktail hour and a threecourse meal of salad, an entrée of choice and dessert. The guests of honor were treated to special performances by Hicksville High School’s award-winning marching
band, led by first-year director Kerri Barnett. Performances were also given by the high school string ensemble under the direction of Jennifer Weiss, vocal soloists Sierra Hall, Rachel Samuel and Jade Vila as well as members of the theater department, who gave a preview of their production of “Almost Maine.” Director of Fine Arts Phil Grusenmeyer served as emcee for the event. Superintendent of Schools Marianne Litzman welcomed the seniors and thanked them for their ongoing support and interest in the district and its students. Litzman, Grusenmeyer, Hicksville
High School Principal Ray Williams and other administrators mingled with their honored guests between courses. Hicksville High School’s gymnasium was decorated beautifully as a grand ballroom for the luncheon and also featured artwork and table centerpieces created by students. The Fall Senior Citizen Luncheon continues to be a fun, intergenerational tradition that brings students and their elders together for an afternoon of feasting, fine arts and conversation. The school also hosts a Senior Citizen Prom in the spring.
