All-State Selections as keynote speaker. ``We are very excited about returning to Rochester – it’s like a second home for NYSSMA,” said president Marc E. Greene. ``More than one thousand music educators from all over the State will attend for professional development opportunities, seminars, performances, and valuable lesson materials for use in their classes and rehearsals. Among the highlights of our conference, however, are the many wonderful performances by our All State students.” The conference will be held from December 5th – December 8th and feature Saturday evening performances by the NYSSMA All State Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra and Women’s Chorus in the Eastman Theater. The All State Instrumental and Vocal

Jazz Ensembles will be featured in the Rochester Plaza Ballroom. Sunday morning, the Eastman Theater will again play host to NYSSMA’s All State Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Mixed Chorus. Students selected for the All State Instrumental and Vocal Jazz Ensembles will also be featured at special performances in Albany during Music In Our Schools Month in March, 2014. NYSSMA will offer professional development opportunities and valuable lesson materials that teachers can use with their students. “We will also be honored to showcase the talents of the school music ensembles from areas across New York State invited to perform,” Greene said.

Throughout my whole life, my parents have pushed me to try for the most elite colleges. In their minds, to be successful, you need to study at the top level. They are concerned mainly with the prestige level of my prospective school. Surely, prestige is not the deciding factor in what I hope will be a very successful career. Perhaps a less recognized school will afford me the same kind of education, in an environment where I will thrive. The vast majority of prestigious schools maintain a focus on graduate education. This

means less one-on-one learning with a professor. If I choose to attend a smaller school, I may have the opportunity to learn more efficiently. On the other hand, the brand recognition associated with my parents’ choices will undoubtably carry weight, and take me far in life. With just a few days until I hear back from colleges with an acceptance or denial, it is time to make a decision. Do I go to a school that will make me happy? Do I go to a school that will make my parents happy? It is undoubtably the biggest decision I will have had to make in my seventeen years of life.

I cannot infer how happy I will be at a college. I don’t even know what I want to do with my life yet. As of right now, I want to become a journalist, but last month I wanted to be a chef! I don’t know how my life will play out, so there are no guarantees. Surely, a degree is nothing; it is what you do in those four years and beyond that count. There is no stress for me anymore, as I am done with the application process. The ball is in their court now. I can only hope I choose the school that is right for me.

The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), is proud to announce that Three Hundred Forty-Seven (347) students from school music programs across Long Island have been selected to perform among the approximately 900 students in NYSSMA All State Ensembles. This constitutes more than one third of the total number of students selected for All State. Students will gather to rehearse and perform in Rochester as NYSSMA celebrates its 81st year of advocating for quality music education in schools throughout New York State. This Conference will mark the sixteenth (16th) in a row to be held at the Rochester Convention Center, and will feature Nancy Ditmer, president of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME)

Decking The Halls By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Just last week, I purchased my very first Christmas tree, complete with twinkling white lights, red ornaments and glittery accents. It’s not Rockefeller Center spectacular, but it’s mine, in all its 6 ½ foot “slim” glory – because, let’s face it, once you actually furnish an apartment, you realize there’s not a whole lot of room leftover for anything else! And so it begins, the decorating, that tedious task we all dread yet somehow become fully engrossed in

the minute the plates are cleared from Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a slow process, but a fun one nonetheless. And for me, this will be my first holiday accumulating Christmas novelties to display in my own cozy living quarters. There’s something about holiday decorations that immediately brighten up any room, or street, or neighborhood… the magic of the season personified. I remember celebrating Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house and being positively mesmerized by the – what seemed to me – gigantic Christmas tree,

completely decked out in lights, ornaments, ribbons and bows, with piles of perfectly wrapped presents nestled underneath. There were the motion figurines in the windows, the collectible Snowbabies village… all signs that the holiday season had officially arrived. I hope that this year, this apartment, this Christmas tree, will all be the beginning of my own holiday traditions, to be built upon with each passing year. Little by little, one ornament at a time, bringing the magic of Christmas home.

The Long Island Museum announces that it will close for the months of January and February, 2014. Next year, 2014 marks the 75th anniversary of the Long Island Museum’s founding and big changes are on the horizon. After a brief winter hiatus, the museum will reopen on March 1 with three new exhibitions: Colors of Long Island, the annual student art exhibition featuring original artwork by Long Island students in grades K through 12. The exhibit will be on display in the Visitors Center from March 1st through April 27th, 2014 Moving to the Art Museum, the main gallery will feature Brothers in Art: the Changing Face of American Painting, which includes more than 150 paintings, prints, drawings and letters by William

Sidney Mount and his brother Shepard Alonzo Mount. This show runs from March 1st through May 4th, 2014. Finally, the newly named Victoria Costigan gallery will feature Jackson Pollock’s Prints: Works from the Pollock-Krasner House. Although best known for his poured, abstract paintings, Pollock also created many works in print media that are not as widely known. This exhibition, curated by Director of the PollockKrasner House, Helen Harrison, contains 12 such prints and will be on display from March 1st through June 8th, 2014. Summer exhibitons will include Long Island at War and a special exhibition, in celebration of the 75th anniversary, LIM @ 75: Treasures from the Permanent Collection, highlighting 75 rarely

seen paintings, carriages and artifacts. In addition, visitors will delight at a new outdoor series featuring larger-than-life sculptures on museum grounds by two Long Island artists. Visitors are invited to look for new programs and more details on exhibitions throughout the coming year and to help us celebrate 75 years of Long Island history. Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Chris J. Coschignano announced that the Town’s Holiday on Ice Show, which has become a holiday tradition for Town residents, will again be presented at the Town of Ice Bay Center in Bethpage. The popular show, now in its 4th year, will take place on Saturday, December 21st at 7 p.m. Admissions is free, but in keeping with this being “the season of giving,” those attending the show are asked to bring two non-perishable food items to the show, which will be collected by Island Harvest, an organization committed to ending hunger on Long Island. “‘Holiday On Ice ‘ is an event that our residents eagerly look forward to each year, and I am delighted that our Town’s residents and their families will once again be able to enjoy this special presentation,” said Councilman Coschignano. “Some of the finest skaters in the Nation will be performing and showcasing their talent.” The Supervisor added that students of the Town’s

Following Friday evening and Saturday morning services, families ate and sang zemirot (Shabbat songs) together in the dining room, and were treated to Divrei Torah (inspirational Torah speeches) given by some of the older elementary-school students. On Friday night, families ate together - whereas at lunchtime on Saturday, parents ate with other parents, and children ate together by grade. There were even two tables of alumni who despite having graduated from HANC

who is currently a freshman at HANC High School in Uniondale, as she put her arm around her fourth grade teacher Mrs. Malka Halpern. On Friday evening, after Shabbat-friendly parenting Mad-libs, many families and staff-members remained in the dining room to play interactive games like Apples to Apples, Set, and Bananagrams. Sarah Gross, mother of children in Kindergarten and fourth grade, and a firsttime Shabbaton participant, played a very lively game of Taboo with principal Rabbi Kalman Fogel and his wife, Debbie, and several families that she had met before, but didn’t know well. “We see each other at school functions, but until now haven’t had the chance to say much more than a hello. It was such a fun way to get to know each other.” The Shabbaton culminated in a Melava Malka party after Shabbat, where Shabbaton participants were joined by other HANC Plainview families who did not spend Shabbat at the hotel. A performance by juggler and magician, Ned Gelfars was enjoyed by all. The evening ended with a buffet dinner and singing and dancing to the dynamic music of Israeli singer and song-writer Sandy Shmuely, who is a HANC Plainview staff member. “I hope to be able to come Plainview, were happy to come to the Shabbaton with for the whole Shabbaton next year,” said second grade their younger siblings. “Once a part of HANC Plainview, parent Suzy Bloom, who attended the melava malka, always a part of HANC Plainview,” said Michal Kaufman “You can just tell that everyone had so much fun!”

The Hebrew Academy of Nassau County (HANC) Plainview elementary school just held its third Family Shabbaton at the Glen Cove Mansion. Families checked in to the hotel on Friday afternoon and were treated to a Pre-Shabbat buffet. Each family was given a beautiful Shabbat gift basket, prepared with love by second grade parent Tara Stier. “I tried very hard to make the welcome baskets present a very warm, personal and thoughtful feeling. I wanted families to start off right from the lobby feeling very included and special,” said Stier. The theme of the Shabbaton was “The Gift of Shabbat,” which focused on what Shabbat brings to the family, and learning to appreciate the gifts that G-d has given. The program included family Torah learning, separate parent and student games, and a family treasure hunt around the hotel. Parents enjoyed meeting and interacting with other parents from the school, and children were able to play with their peers. After lunch “we hardly saw our kids at all because they were so busy having fun,” said Melissa Weinick, whose daughter Jordyn is in fifth grade and who attended all three Shabbatons. “This was the best Shabbaton yet,” she said. “It was so nice to just be able to talk and connect with other HANC parents, and to chat with the teachers on a personal level. It was amazing that practically the entire Judaic Studies staff came with their families.”

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, Young Israel of Plainview members of all ages, in conjunction with the Island Harvest Turkey & Trimmings Collection Campaign, held their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. From 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, volunteers encouraged shoppers to donate frozen turkeys, canned goods and money to Island Harvest, in an effort to help the less fortunate during this typically festive time of year. Their efforts were a success by any unit of measurement, with 95 turkeys, over 950 pounds of canned goods and almost $1,000 gathered for the hungry of Long Island. What made this year’s event a little different than previous years was the artic chill that brought along below freezing conditions. Temperatures hit a frigid 22 degrees with the wind chill making it feel even colder. There were several adult leaders along with a majority of youth attendees. The campaign, which involved several shifts of people thought the day totaling over 20 individuals, took place in front of the ShopRite on

The programs are open to Town residents 18 and older, and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The badminton program

starts on Sunday, January 5th and will be held on Thursdays and Sundays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The volleyball program starts on Tuesday, January 7th and will be conducted on Tuesdays from 9 pm to 10:30 pm and Saturdays from 8:30 to 10:30 pm. The programs, which are 12 weeks in duration, are $60 for residents and $70

for non-residents. Proof of residency is required. “Badminton and volleyball are both excellent forms of aerobic exercise, which can help promote multiple health benefits and longevity,” Councilman Pinto said. “Along with positive health benefits, I would encourage people to join these coed activities for the social

The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is inviting high school-aged orchestral musicians and choral singers to audition for the July 8th through 21st, 2014 performance tour of The People’s Republic of China.
