Long Island Champions
T
he Syosset Braves secured the first Long Island Championship in school history after the Varsity Football team defeated Suffolk County Champion Lindenhurst, 3513, on November 28th. At one point the Braves led 35-0 off the strength of some defensive touchdowns and the solid play of Syosset’s quarterback William Hogan. This season, the Braves opened up a sluggish 1-3, but rattled off seven wins in its final eight games to capture the crown.

Residents looking for a fun activity to brighten up the upcoming winter months are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Adult CoEd Badminton Program. The program is open to Town residents and nonresidents 18 and older, and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The Badminton program starts on Sunday, January 4th and will be held on Thursdays, Fridays, and
Sundays. The Badminton program will be conducted on Thursdays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m., Fridays from 9 to 10:30 p.m., and Sundays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The program is 12 weeks in duration, and is $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents. Proof of residency is required. Registration for the CoEd Badminton program will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, 167 Broadway in Hicksville,
on Tuesday, December 9th from 7 to 9 p.m., on Thursday, December 11th from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, December 13th from 9 a.m. to noon. Members of the Syosset High School Interact Club unveiled its bold new campaign to help save the lives of seven children born with a congenital heart defect. Dubbed the “7 In 7” campaign, the students, under the guidance of advisor Carisa Steinberg, hope to raise $35,000 to cover life-saving surgeries for seven children on seven continents in seven days.
Through its partnership with nonprofit Gift of Life International, Syosset’s Interact Club has raised funds throughout the years to help pay for these surgeries, which cost about $5,000 per operation. This year, however, the 7 In 7 campaign will attempt to carry out these operations in a unique and impactful way. The club announced
its bold intentions at its annual fundraiser kickoff event held in the student lobby at the high school on November 25th. The kickoff featured a live conversation via Skype with Gift of Life International’s first-ever heart surgery recipient, Grace Agwaru, who spoke briefly from her location in Uganda.

My approach is more along the lines of wander around select stores for hours, aimlessly scanning the departments for inspiration for that “perfect,” thoughtful gift. The funniest part is, it works. At the beginning of the Christmas season, I pretty much compile a list of people I need to buy for, followed by any suggestions or subtle hints that may have been dropped throughout the year. These are generally few and far between.
The rest is left up to that aforementioned “inspiration.” While my system may not be the most efficient in terms of time, it ensures that I don’t miss anything in my survey of stores. I refuse to simply buy something just for the sake of crossing off a gift on the checklist. May as well just re-gift then, no? It’s cheaper. Speaking of price, it seems inevitable – for me, at least – that the second I find exactly what I’m looking for, it shows up somewhere else for less. Considerably less. Like, along the lines of

The kind of deal that you should really take advantage of, while returning your previous so-called “bargain” for a full refund. But, as is the case with most things done during the rush of the holiday season, we buy on impulse, we occasionally pay too much in the process – and we don’t care all that much, because, hey, Christmas comes but once a year, right? Right. Just remember that when the credit card bills come due in January.

Cornbread Prep With parent volunteers by their side, second-grade students at Woodland Elementary School in the Hicksville School District geared up for their Thanksgiving feasts by preparing cornbread batter in class. The festive activity incorporated three
different curricula for the students. As part of social studies, students learned about the first Thanksgiving and the importance of corn to the Pilgrims. By learning how to measure batter and follow a recipe, students honed their math skills. Each student then

For the first time in 40 years, the Syosset High School varsity football team was crowned Nassau County champions after defeating Baldwin High School in the Conference I Championship game on November 20th. In the final offensive drive of the game, junior QB William Hogan led the Braves on a six-play, 55-
yard touchdown drive that culminated in Ian Berg’s two-yard run to pay-dirt to make the score 26-20 with just more than three minutes remaining. Syosset’s defense stiffened and the Braves hoisted the trophy in front of a packed crowd at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium. Receiver Michael Elardo
made history on the same night. His eight catches for 111 yards set the Long Island record for most yards received in a single season. Elardo finished the campaign with 1,343 total yards on the year. The last time Syosset varsity football team secured a county championship was in 1974.

You can go visit the castle or stop and see the parade on Main Street. You can even take pictures with Disney princesses and characters. Then there is Hollywood Studios - it is my personal favorite. It is filled with music, love and happiness. If you want to see a great play or musical, the place to go is Hollywood Studios. Lastly is Epcot. Epcot is all about the future. The ride Spaceship Earth (also known as the big Epcot ball) is where you learn about the past and you can invent your own future. The parks are nice, but there is much more to Disney than the parks. There is horseback riding at Circle D Ranch. Then you have surrey bike riding at Saratoga Springs. You can also do arts and crafts at Saratoga Springs.
There are also horse drawn carriage rides at Port Orleans. Walt Disney also has special cuisine. Their food has real quality. One of the restaurants at Walt Disney world is the California Grill at the contemporary resort. At the California Grill, they serve food from all over the world. My favorite is their sushi. Then there is Bama’s at Animal Kingdom Lodge. At Bama’s, they serve some African meals and some American meals. So go visit Walt Disney World because Disney Vacations + Family = Excitement and Magical Memories

Long Island Champions The Syosset Braves secured the first Long Island Championship in school history after the varsity football team defeated Suffolk County Champion Lindenhurst 35-13 on November 28th. At one point the Braves led 35-0 off the strength of some defensive touchdowns and the solid play of Syosset’s quarterback William Hogan. “This is amazing,” Hogan said. “It has been 40 years since the district has won a county championship so [the Long Island Championship] is a big deal for the school and the alumni. It feels great to be
able to bring it home to all of them.” The LIC originated in 1992, pitting the Suffolk County champions against the Nassau County champions in their respective divisions. On November 20th Syosset secured its first county title in 40 years with a 2620 win over Baldwin. “This was the culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication,” said Syosset Coach Paul Rorke. “The coaches and the kids put in a lot of time and effort and this is incredibly gratifying.” Defensively, the Braves forced five turnovers, including two interception
returns for touchdowns: one by Michael Panvini and the other by David Reiter. Offensively, Hogan scrambled for a 1-yard-touchdown run and completed a 39-yard touchdown pass to Michael Elardo. Elardo, who holds the Long Island record for most receiving yards in a single-season, finished the day with four catches for 78 yards. Running back Ian Berg also recorded a touchdown score with a 2-yard scramble. This season the Braves opened up a sluggish 1-3, but rattled off seven wins in its final eight games to capture the crown.

Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid
(NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some Answers Busy parents and caregivers may be tempted by safety shortcuts when transporting children. AAA offers simple reminders to protect parents’ most precious cargo.
Shortcut: “I’m only driving a mile from home, so my son doesn’t need to be secured in his car seat since it’s a short trip.” Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip—no matter the distance—especially since most crashes occur close to home. Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-year-old daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.” Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt. Shortcut: “We will be driving more people in our car than we have seat belts. Since it’s a short trip, it’s not a big deal for someone to ride on another person’s lap.”
Reminder: It’s never safe to ride on another person’s lap. Each passenger should be properly restrained on every trip. Shortcut: “My son is 10 years old and 4’6” tall. He’s big enough to use a seat belt now.” Reminder: The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends children continue to use beltpositioning booster seats until they are 4’9” and the seat belt fits properly.
