Repeat Customers

Small business owners no doubt recognize the value of repeat customers, but few may recognize just how valuable such customers can be to their bottom lines. A study from researchers at Harvard Business School found that a customer’s eighth purchase was an average of 80 percent higher than his or her first purchase. According to the 2020 WeddingWire Newlywed Report, more couples who were married in 2019 got engaged on Christmas Day than any other day during the year. Christmas Eve was the second most popular day to pop the question, while the Sunday before Christmas Eve came in fourth (New Year’s Day rounded out the top three). Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson recently announced that residents seeking a low-impact and enjoyable fitness activity are encouraged take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Yoga Classes, which will be held in January and February. Classes are co-ed and open to individuals 18 years of age or older. “The Town is proud to offer residents a variety of programs and services including these yoga classes which offer benefits to the mind, body and soul,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Yoga builds strength, increases general flexibility and is considered a great stress reliever. Sign up today and use this opportunity to also meet new friends that can last a lifetime!” Beginning January

4th, Yoga Classes will run for 10-weeks on Sundays (9am-10am) at the Hicksville Athletic Center, Mondays (10am11am) at the Hicksville Athletic Center, Tuesdays (8pm-9pm) at the Hicksville Athletic Center, and Saturdays (9am-10am) at the Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. Registration takes place at the Hicksville Athletic Center on Monday, December 14th (5:30pm – 9:30pm), Wednesday, December 16th (5:30pm – 9:30pm) and Thursday, December 17th (5:30pm – 9:30pm). The fee for residents is $60 and $70 for nonresidents. Please note that the schedule may be subject to change and residents are encouraged to inquire about special holiday scheduling. If a session is cancelled due

to inclement weather, a make-up session will be attempted. Mats will not be provided, so participants must bring their own Yoga mat. Participants should check with a physician before partaking in any physical fitness program. Due to COVID, class enrollment will be limited to allow for proper social distancing and temperatures will be checked upon arrival. Masks must be worn while moving throughout the facility. Daily cleaning and sanitizing takes place prior to and after classes. Syosset Central School District Celebrates a New Fitness Center The Syosset Board of Education, district administration and local officials celebrated the opening of a new state-ofthe-art Fitness Center on Friday, November 13, 2020 by cutting a bright red ribbon in the new space located at Syosset High School. Senator Jim Gaughran and Legislator Joshua Lafazan were in attendance, along with a limited number of Syosset students and coaches. The event was limited in size to abide by all health and safety precautions currently in place due to the pandemic. The state-of-theart fitness center will amplify the Syosset physical education, health and wellness, and Athletics programs. The facility provides space for instruction, weight training, circuit training, and cardio conditioning, in addition to new locker rooms, restrooms facilities and athletic offices. The equipment for the facility was selected not only to help students advance physically, but also to keep them safe. The machines were chosen to build the strength specifically needed for each sport,

helping to prevent injuries on the field. Under trained supervision, students are currently using the fitness center during physical education classes during the school day and for off-season strength and conditioning after school. The fitness center is currently operating at a limited capacity so that all health and safety protocols can be followed. The new Fitness Center is approximately 8,200 square feet and will offer the following features: • Cardio machines including ellipticals, treadmills, and stationary bikes • Pendulum plate loading strength equipment • 8 free weight racks • Medicine balls, Plyo boxes, strength bands, conditioning ropes, kettlebells, and mats • New locker rooms and bathroom facilities In February 2018, the voters of the Syosset Central School District approved the construction of a new weight room and fitness center for Syosset High School as part of a capital project improvement plan. The

addition of the new Fitness Center follows the completion of a new 8-lane track and artificial turf field, the addition of two new tennis courts and refurbishment of the exiting courts, and updates to the pool facility. “The District is deeply grateful for the support of the Syosset community and to Senator Jim Gaughran and Legislator Joshua Lafazan for assisting in securing grants to aid in the purchase and installation of the state-ofthe-art fitness equipment for our new facility that will serve Syosset students for years to come,” remarked Dr. Tom Rogers, Superintendent of Schools. The new building addition is located where temporary building structures, or “portables”, once stood that housed the old weight room. The location of the facility provides quick access to the new 8-lane track and artificial turf field just completed last year. An abundance of natural light from a wall of windows and a modern, open design featuring the school’s bold red and black colors make the space inviting and engaging for students.

Winter Co-Ed Fitness Classes Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto recently announced that residents who are interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness over the cold and stagnant winter months will be able to register for the Town’s popular Co-Ed Fitness Classes. Classes are offered to individuals 18 years of age or older. “The Town is pleased to once again be offering these excellent fitness programs, which provide a terrific outlet for our residents to exercise and stay in shape during the winter,” said Councilman Imbroto. “The Town’s Parks Department does a great job providing residents the opportunity to take advantage of these classes and stay physically active and engaged during the cold winter months. Giving Back in a Tasteful Way H.B. Mattlin Middle School in the PlainviewOld Bethpage Central School District will host its first ever virtual food drive. Mattlin students are creating hunger awareness posters, flyers, and videos promoting the drive. This community service activity will run until December 23, 2020. The food drive is in partnership with The Rudman Family Food

Pantry, an organization the District has worked with in past years for the semi-annual 7th grade trips to the food pantry. “I’m thrilled that we can provide our students with a way to give back to the community in a safe way,” said Dr. Mary O’Meara, Superintendent of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. “Our students always enjoy giving back

to the community, and it’s wonderful to see that our teachers were able to think of an alternative and creative way to have our students continue that tradition.” “The students will create their own flyers and post them on social media giving the students a chance to be leaders and advocates for change in their communities,” said Susan Epstein, family

History of the Dreidel Dreidels are especially popular during the eight-day Jewish festival of Chanukah. Even though they may seem like novelty items for children, dreidels have a rich and interesting history. In ancient times, Greek Syrians infiltrated

areas where many practicing Jews resided. Over time, the Greek Syrians became more oppressive and tried to convert the Jewish people to their pagan beliefs. However, their efforts were not very successful. As a result, the Greek

Syrians established laws that outlawed ritual commandments and the study of the Torah. It is widely believed that Jewish people used dreidels to fool the Greeks into thinking they were just playing a game. Instead, rolls of

the dreidel corresponded to numerical equivalents that could represent elements of the Jewish faith, according to My Jewish Learning. Others say the dreidel was a distraction. Children of Israel would learn the Torah in outlying areas

and forests. When Greek patrols were nearby, the children would hide their texts and take out dreidels instead, says Chabad.org. Today the dreidel is a token of the Chanukah miracle. In Israel, the letters upon the dreidel are Nun,

Gimel, Hay, and Pay, which stand for the Hebrew equivalent of “a great miracle happened here.” Outside of israel, the last letter is Shin, which transforms the phrase into “a great miracle happened there.”
