Summit a Success According to the American Cancer Society, in 2015 it is estimated that 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women and men. Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer for women which means that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. The Fifth Annual Breast Cancer Summit recently took place to address these statistics and to open dialogue with cancer experts. The annual event is hosted by Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, PC as a free community service program and focuses on patient education, providing an overview of

the latest developments in detection, treatment and reconstruction. Hundreds of guests attended this year’s program which was hosted by Kristin Thorne, WABC-TV Eyewitness News Correspondent. Jennifer Griffin, National Security Correspondent for Fox News Channel and breast cancer survivor, served as keynote speaker and presented a touching speech titled “Entering the Cancer War Zone.” “Fighting breast cancer is as much psychological as it is a physical fight. And the one thing I learned is that feeling beautiful through that process is very important and may even affect the outcome of the treatment,” explained Griffin. For her efforts in

the fight against cancer, Griffin received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the LI Breast Cancer Summit. The Breast Cancer Summit was created to assist those diagnosed with breast cancer, to bring together community and resources, and offer knowledge and support. The event attracts hundreds of attendees, including cancer experts, researchers, doctors, nurses, breast cancer survivors, and advocacy groups. The program covers such topics as innovative breast cancer treatment, the latest cancer research updates and care, and progress achieved in the fight against cancer. The program was live-

streamed for those who may not be well enough to attend the program in person. “It’s important to the practice to do our part and educate the community. We bring together patients, support groups, and medical professionals, and provide a public forum for learning and networking,” explains Roger L. Simpson, MD, FACS, president of Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. In 2009 Griffin received the news which would change her life and become the biggest battle she would ever fight. She was diagnosed with stage 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. After 17 rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy

and radiation treatments, she was declared in remission. She is a strong advocate for breast cancer awareness. “Since my return to work after cancer, I have thrown myself into working with wounded warriors, especially amputees and those suffering from posttraumatic stress - perhaps we share a bit of common ground - scars inside and out....I may look fully healed but there are triggers that take me back to that traumatic time. Programs such as this Breast Cancer Summit are vitally important resources for those touched by this disease so we can learn what resources exist and how we can access

them,” said Griffin. “I am honored to be a part of such an important event that attracts leading experts who share insight and information with the public.” Griffin joined Fox News Channel (FNC) in October 1999 as a Jerusalem-based correspondent. Since 2007 Griffin has reported daily from the Pentagon where she questions senior military leaders, travels to war zones with the Joint Chiefs and Secretaries of Defense, and reports on all aspects of the military. I recently came upon a column I wrote just about a decade ago for this very space, detailing that strange phenomenon that occurs around this time of year – the annual appearance of the species known as “the male shopper.” Following is an excerpt… Men can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24th in 25 minutes. A truer statement has never been made. One of two things happens when men make their one trip

to the store each year – they either A) pick out something “useful” like an appliance – toaster, vacuum, the big-screen TV they always wanted; or B) buy everything in sight to make up for their lack of shopping prowess during the rest of the year. Once the purchases are made, there’s the small matter of gift-wrapping. Some men don’t even attempt the impossible and instead settle for a large bow on its own; others give it a whirl and wind up with a mass of crumpled wrapping paper, covered in tape, with only about 75% of the box actually, you know, wrapped.

Talent, indeed. I used to think it was just my father who waited until Christmas Eve to shop, until I joined him one year and witnessed firsthand the wall-to-wall lines of men with a similar problem – how to complete all their shopping and still make it home in time for the holiday dinner. So, this Christmas Eve, if you happen to be out making some last minute purchases, don’t stress out – those men standing on line next to you are just getting started. Plus, they still have to wrap. Eastern New York gave a dollar back for every registered player to each respective league to use it as they saw fit for the benefit of their players. So the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) received a check for $58,614 for their 58,614 players, the East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) received a check for $16,946, etc. “I stated that when I became President in 2010, we would bring fiscal responsibility to Eastern New York and I believe that our Board of Directors

Grant Received The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $12,000 grant from The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for the Student Assistance Programs - Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) and Teen Intervene. Funding will help to support the ongoing operation of these evidence based-programs designed to educate young people about the potential health consequences associated with substance abuse in an age appropriate manner. The TGFD prevention program helps children build core social competencies, refusal skills and protective factors relating to tobacco and other drug use during their critical formative educational years. Teen Intervene, a psychoeducation intervention model, addresses teens experiencing mild to

moderate problems associated with alcohol or other drug use. “We are so grateful to The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for supporting these important programs. LICADD will continue to participate in community meetings and network with a variety of youth-serving agencies to promote service coordination, collaboration and innovation” says Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. For over 59 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. VETS DINNER - The Jewish War Veterans Post 655 recently held its 23rd Thanksgiving Day Dinner for approximately 120 veterans. The staff and volunteers of B.K Sweeney came together on Thanksgiving to bring the joy of a Thanksgiving meal to the veterans who have served to protect our nation in the past.

Santa will skate a lap or two around the rink and then will be available to visit with children and take pictures afterwards. “The Holiday on Ice Show has become a big attraction at the Town’s Ice Skating Center,” Supervisor Venditto said. “I encourage all residents to join us for a magical and fun-filled evening.” Supervisor Venditto said the Ice Skating Center, which for many years has been named as ‘A Best of Long Island’ award winner, features a pro shop for shoppers seeking a gift for hockey fans on their lists. There is also a fireplace for visitors to spend a relaxing moment and perhaps enjoying refreshments from the snack bar. “Imagine the enjoyment a family will have watching a holiday show, and then enjoying hot chocolate while sitting by a fireplace,” said Supervisor Venditto. “This is a great family holiday event, and admission is free.” In keeping with this time of the year being “the season of giving,” those attending the show are asked to bring two nonperishable food items, which will be collected by Island Harvest, an

organization committed to ending hunger on Long Island. In addition, the Town will also again take part in the “Holiday Mail for Heroes” Program. Holiday greeting cards will be available in the lobby for guests to fill out, which will be sent to our troops. “It’s our way of thanking our men and women in the armed forces and letting them know their extraordinary service is not forgotten during the holiday season,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Our freedom to enjoy the holiday season is the direct result of their dedicated service.” The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is located in Bethpage Community Park, at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. Due to the “Holiday on Ice” show, the public skating sessions at the Center, which are normally held from 1 to 3 p.m. and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., will be cancelled that evening. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto is pleased to announce that the Town of Oyster Bay’s Annual Holiday on Ice Show will be held on Saturday, December 19th, starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center. Students from the Town’s Ice Skating Program will present a captivating skating exhibition to celebrate the holiday season. Admission is free. “This highly anticipated event has become a holiday tradition for many Town residents and is truly special evening of family fun,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The students in the Town’s ice skating program are amazingly talented and are sure to entertain the audience. The Holiday on Ice Show will also feature other highly accomplished skaters who are sure to dazzle the audience with their grace and skill.” In addition to figure skating, there will be other holiday themed activities including an exhibition hockey game between the Elves and the Reindeer, which are two teams with players from the Town of Oyster Bay Tot Hockey program. Fighting Hunger Throughout the month of November, students and staff of South Woods Middle School in Syosset participated in the school’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit Mercy First. In total, the South Woods Middle School community collected and donated more than 850 pounds of food to the cause. Mercy First is a local

organization that inspires hope and promotes healing for children and families by providing quality human services and educational opportunities while also advocating for social change. The food drive was organized by the school’s respective student council organizations representing every grade level in conjunction with the school’s Triple A Club.

Each homeroom class was asked to contribute a portion of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, such as stuffing, canned vegetables or gravy. Last month, South Woods Middle School also held a walkathon and canned food drive to benefit the Rock CAN Roll hunger relief organization.

Promoting a Healthy You Syosset High School recently hosted its ninth annual Health Awareness Day, when teachers, students and outside organizations manned stations in the school gymnasium that featured a wide range of wellnessrelated topics to promote a healthier lifestyle. Organizations such as

Trazer, which uses stateof-the-art technology to conduct concussion testing and fitness-related drills, and Farmingdale State College’s School of Nursing, were on hand to conduct health screenings. Additionally, homegrown and healthy food vendors provided samplings of fruits,

vegetables and even some sweet healthy treats, while other groups provided a variety of fun and engaging activities. The Syosset PTSA Wellness Committee was also on hand with prizes for contestants willing to test their health and safety knowledge. Health teacher Shai Fisher coordinated the event.

Thanksgiving Education

First-graders at Burns Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District celebrated Thanksgiving with a spirited display of their knowledge of the national holiday. With their parents

Demonstrating Pride H.B. Mattlin Middle School students at Plainview-Old Bethpage School District are recognized once a month for demonstrating one or more aspects of PRIDE: Personal best, Respect, Impulse control, Decision making and Empathy. Faculty members nominate students caught performing acts of kindness. October’s

winners include Spencer Axelrod, Brian Futerman, Stephen Karlquist, Sam Endelson, Kaitlyn Eng and Alyssa Reifer. November’s winners include Ronald Cheng, Josh Lee, Kimon Vontas, Brendan Khazzam, Brett Lester, Hunter Pearlstein, Michael Rovinsky, Ryan Sheflin, Ian Moskowitz, Joseph Starr, Noah Kule and Dylan Rubin.

The students were recognized for being upstanders, helping younger students find their way around the building and helping students who did not have all of their class materials. Each student was rewarded with a certificate of recognition from his or her guidance counselors.

Why They’re Thankful Prior to the Thanksgiving holiday break, South Grove and Village elementary schools in Syosset celebrated Thanksgiving with traditional feasts, special family and community guests, and acknowledgements for everything and everyone to be thankful for in life. At South Grove Elementary School, a traditional Thanksgiving feast was held in the kindergarten/grade 1 annex honoring local firefighters,

police officers and veterans. Students performed the “Turkey Twist” and other entertaining songs for their heroes under the direction of South Grove music teacher Dr. Kathy Conklin. The school’s developmental reading specialist Tina Mancuso coordinated the event. The South Grove PTA also sponsored a Thanksgiving feast in main building for grades 2-5. Meanwhile, at Village Elementary School, all of

the school’s 388 students, 100 staff members and invited central administrators were treated to a traditional Thanksgiving feast served by Village school parent volunteers. Students donned school spirit T-shirts with each grade level sporting a different color. Kindergartners dressed as either Native Americans or Pilgrims as well.

Blood Donations Needed The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to end the year with real meaning by donating blood for hospital patients in need. Holiday activities, severe weather and seasonal illnesses, like the flu, can pull people away from their regular blood donation schedules. This creates a greater need for blood donations this time of year, especially around the winter holidays. To encourage donations, all those who come to donate
