Earlier this year, the National Restaurant Association indicated that nearly 100,000 restaurants nationwide have closed as a result of the pandemic, even despite governmentfunded financial assistance. “We have worked tirelessly since this pandemic began to help location businesses come back safely and efficiently,” Supervisor Saladino said. “We cut the red tape, permitted for new outdoor options for restaurant patrons and helped restaurant owners reopen safely and successfully. We are pleased to continue with that effort, and will invite restaurants to extend their outdoor dining services through 2022. At the conclusion of a two-week campaign prior to the Bethpage Annual Turkey Drive which supports Island Harvest, NICE delivered 10 pallets of canned and dried goods – more than 5,000 items which is the equivalent of 37 full shopping carts – donated by NICE employees as well as NICE Bus riders through collection boxes at its Garden City center and the Hempstead Transit Center. Additionally, $6,000 in cash was donated by NICE’s 850 employees and $1,000 worth of frozen turkeys was provided as a contribution from NICE. “NICE Bus and its employees are dedicated to supporting the residents of Nassau County in ways which go beyond just

Making ‘Cards for Cops’ During the month of November, students at Central Boulevard Elementary School in Bethpage took part in Beyond the Badge’s program: Cards for Cops.
Beyond the Badge is a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to raise awareness of suicide and mental health within law enforcement. As part of this month’s
Thoughtful Thursday, students in Barbara Cataldi’s second grade class colored their own cards and wrote an encouraging message to police officers on Nov. 18.
Syosset High School Honors 24 Student-Athletes at Annual Commitment Day
Syosset High School celebrated its studentathletes at the high school’s annual Athlete Commitment Day on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. Two dozen of Syosset’s most distinguished studentathletes committed to play their respective sports at the collegiate level during a ceremony held outside on the multipurpose artificial turf field. Syosset Director of Athletics, PE and Recreation Drew Cronin and boys varsity lacrosse coach John Calabria hosted the annual event attended by family, administration, faculty and coaches. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers, along with the students’ coaches, commended the student-athletes on their character, dedication and achievement and recognized the students’ families for supporting them throughout their journey to becoming a collegiate athlete. “We have a tremendous athletic department and top-notch athletes. This has been a goal for all of them to reach, and now they’re finally here,” said Calabria. “There is nothing like the experience of being a
collegiate athlete.” “It would be hard under any circumstances to be sitting in one of these chairs, but to be sitting in one of these chairs having had your steady progress of improvement interrupted for 20 months…it is really remarkable to have recovered from that and to be here right now,” commented Dr. Rogers on the perseverance of the students throughout the pandemic. Coaches then recognized each of the student-athletes for their performance and dedication and extended their gratitude to the parents of the students and the administration for their support of the athletic program. Through her organization, she has helped collect 36,000 puzzles and distributed over 5,000 to nursing homes. Her efforts helped raise over $25,000 for Alzheimer’s research. Before the pandemic stopped visits to facilities, the program had expanded to 36 states and four
countries. From a young age, Hailey became a caretaker for her grandmother who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. They worked jigsaw puzzles together, and Hailey experienced the value of puzzles for people experiencing dementia. She discovered that completing puzzles gave them a rare sense of accomplishment and, according to some studies, can slow the disease’s progression. By being nominated, Hailey will receive a $2,500 grant, partial four-year college scholarship to one of three Indiana universities, and recognition in an exhibit at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Hailey is using the money from the award grant to supply puzzles to memory care facilities and to help publish a book she authored with guidance for youth caregivers.
Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato recently announced that residents may apply for New York State property tax exemptions from now through January 3, 2022. Homeowners wishing to receive exemptions on their 2022-2023 School taxes and 2023 General taxes must file with the Nassau County Department of Assessment or New York State prior to the January 3rd deadline. “I want to make sure that every resident who is eligible, whether they’re a senior citizen, veteran, new homeowner, volunteer firefighter/EMT, person with a disability, or person renovating/ improving their home, get the opportunity to take advantage of the available exemptions,” Receiver Pravato stated. “There are many exemptions available to qualified residents and homeowners, so I urge those interested to contact my office for further assistance parsing through the matter.” Exemptions, resulting in property tax savings, are available to qualified residents for the following categories: • School Tax Relief Program (STAR)- Residents may receive only one of the following: o STAR Credit- the STAR Program has been
changed by New York State. New recipients, and current recipients whose annual income is between $250,000 and $500,000, will be issued a check directly from New York State instead of receiving a school property tax exemption. The amount of the benefit will be the same. You cannot receive both the credit and the exemption. Register with New York State by telephone at (518) 4572036 or online at www.tax. ny.gov/pit/property/star/ default.htm. o Basic STAR Property Tax Exemptionthis program provides an exemption from school property taxes for owner-occupied, primary residences with an annual household income of less than $250,000. Current Basic Star Exemption recipients will keep their exemption as long as they continue to own their current home. o Enhanced STAR Property Tax Exemption/ Credit- this exemption is available to senior citizen homeowners who are 65 years of age or older during the year in which the exemption takes effect, and whose annual income does not exceed $92,000. Senior citizens whose annual income exceeds $92,000 will still be eligible for the Basic STAR Exemption/
Credit. Current Enhanced Star Exemption recipients will keep their exemption as long as they continue to own their current home. Recipients must enroll in the Income Verification Program. • Senior Citizen exemption provides a tax savings for individuals over the age of 65, whose income is less than $37,400. To participate and receive this tax savings (between 5% and up to 50% reduction on certain county, town and school district property taxes) specific qualification criteria must be met. • V e t e r a n s Exemptions are for those individuals who rendered service to our country. The eligibility to receive this exemption and amount to be exempted depends upon the time, duration and type of service, along with other criteria. • Cold War Veterans Exemption is for veterans who served during the Cold War period. The Law also provides an additional exemption to disabled veterans. • Gold Star Parent Exemption is available for the parent of a child who died in the line of duty while serving in the United States Armed Forces during a period of war, as defined in NYS Real
