The not-for-profit organization finds adoptive and foster homes for children on Long Island and in New York City. During the presentation of the check to Little Flower Children and Family Services, King Kullen Co-President Brian C. Cullen stated, “Thirty years ago, my brothers and I started the James A. Cullen Golf Outing to pay tribute to our father and to support Little Flower’s foster care and adoption services. In the three decades since that inaugural golf outing, King Kullen has raised over $3 million for Little Flower. We are extremely proud of this accomplishment and gratified that countless children and families have benefited as a result. Into The Black By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Black Friday. As I sit here writing my column from home at 11:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, my alarm clock is set for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why, you ask, would I subject myself to the madness that has become a tradition for thousands of manic shoppers desperately scouring stores for the best bargains? Because it’s fun. Although, I will admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea until recently. Prior to my first Black Friday shopping experience, I was one who would wait until the week of Christmas to even begin, occasionally

even making a last-minute mall run on Christmas Eve. No list, no direction – just aimless wandering until the “perfect” gift caught my eye. I hated shopping and everything that came with it – the crowds, the long lines, the even longer return/ exchange lines… all of it. Well, the lack of preparation remains the same. Still no list, no real ideas to speak of… but I have developed a bit more tolerance for the shopping end of things. Perhaps now that I am older and have more means to show my appreciation to those I love, I see the value in putting a bit more effort into things.

Not that you will ever catch me in a store on Thanksgiving itself. The holiday is exactly that – a holiday – and should be celebrated and savored as such. Plenty of time to shop in the month following; beginning on Black Friday just seems to add a little extra excitement to the process. Call me crazy. Call me a convert to the madness. Whatever. And with that, I had better get some sleep. I have a long day of shopping ahead of me tomorrow. Enjoy your Thanksgiving leftovers, make your list, check it twice – and maybe I’ll see you on line at the store.

The Town of Oyster Bay invites Hicksville residents and stakeholders to attend a public open house on Thursday, December 5th, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of the school at Trinity Lutheran Church, located at 40 West Nicholai Street in Hicksville, to review and provide input on the draft nomination study of

the Northwest Hicksville Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) Step I project, Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia announced. “At the upcoming public open house, community members will have the opportunity to review and provide feedback on the vision, goals and objectives from the draft nomination study,” Councilwoman

Alesia said. “The PreNomination study provides a description and analysis of existing conditions, opportunities, and reuse potential for properties located in the proposed BOA. There is a strong emphasis on the identification and reuse potential of strategic sites that are catalysts for revitalization.”

Councilwoman Alesia went on to say that the BOA program provides communities with land use and redevelopment planning tools to revitalize areas affected by Brownfields, underutilized or vacant properties and economic distress. The Northwest Hicksville Study Area is bounded by the Northern State

Public Open House Parkway to the north, Old Country Road to the south, Cantiague Lane to the west, and 106/107 to the east. Along with the project team – which includes H2M, Nelson, Pope & Voorhis, and Sustainable Long Island – the Town of Oyster Bay has been compiling and analyzing input and preliminary

ideas generated from past public meetings and a community survey to help create the draft vision, goals, and objectives for the Northwest study area as required by the BOA program. The Ride for Life Organization, which raises funds and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, has earmarked $160,000 for Stony Brook University in 2014 to support ALS research and clinical care. A portion of these funds ($100,000) will be the latest installment from the Ride for Life to support the development of ALS clinical trials at the Stony Brook Neurosciences Institute. The pledge is in conjunction with the match from the Simons Foundation Challenge Grant. The $60,000 slated for clinical care services at Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, an ALS Association Certified Center providing comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for patients,

SHOWING HOLIDAY SPIRIT - The third graders from Grace Day School participated in an outreach project called “Operation Christmas Child.” They joined the efforts with children throughout the U.S. to deliver shoeboxes to more boys and girls in over 130 countries. Each third grader filled two shoeboxes with basic necessities that are hard to come by for children in need. After they filled and wrapped each box, the lot was delivered to a central collection point, to be distributed to be delivered to children in need across the globe.

HELMET CRASH TEST - 7th & 8th Graders from Grace Day School spent a day with engineers from Lockheed Martin, an American global company in aerospace, defense, security and advanced technology known worldwide. Students were introduced to engineering from a mechanical, mathematical and computer perspective. They enjoyed a crash test assignment given by three guest engineers from one of the world’s largest defense companies. The assignment consisted of teams that had to create crash helmets using specific materials and specifications. Then a team competition was held to test the helmet impact capacity from heights of 3, 6 and 9 feet, both indoors and outdoors.

we hope to contribute importantly to this global effort.” In 2014, the Ride for Life will provide additional funds to other organizations in the region, expanding services such as home nursing care and handicapped loaner vans designed to make mobility for patients and their families more manageable. Funds for the organization’s “Care for Life” program, which provides a one-time grant to support home respite care, will be increased per individual patient recipient. The Ride for Life will also continue its support of Long Island high school seniors who have a family member affected by ALS with its college scholarship program. Some 40 high school students have received scholarships over the past six years. Next year $6,000 in scholarships will be announced sometime in February. Most of the funds generated by the Ride for Life organization can be attributed to the annual Ride for Life event that occurs during ALS Awareness Month each May. The 2014 event begins on May 5. Prior to that, the Ride for Life will hold its Bike Trek, a multilength bicycle fundraiser that courses through the Stony Brook University Campus on April 27th.

The focus of the project was to recycle old material to make new artistic creations. ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million

free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free

credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.
