The Harry Report By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I was recently asked by a longtime friend and reader of this column for an update on “Harry.” For those who may have missed Chapters I & II, Harry is my slightly psychotic goldfish, purchased for all of 17¢ to serve as a “friend” to another fish I had won at a local carnival. Well, one week later, “Harvey” the carnie fish was floating upside down and Harry was riding solo. alternately cowering behind (or amongst the branches) of his tree, and darting madly from one side (do round bowls have “sides”?) to the other, occasionally clunking into the glass as he zigs when he should have zagged. Hopefully, there hasn’t been any permanent brain damage. It’s difficult to tell for sure. One of his favorite pastimes seems to be watching me cook. As I prepare the food on the counter, he eagerly watches, as if hoping for a morsel to taste. I suppose it would be a nice change

from his dried flakes, although he does manage to suck those down with the ferocity of a small, finned Hoover®. So that’s the update on Harry, for all who care to know. Hopefully, he’ll survive the holiday season and ring in the New Year with us all. Who knows, maybe Santa will even bring him a new fishy friend if he’s good! Although, based on the last experiment in cohabitation, perhaps I should leave well enough alone. ‘Til then, Happy Holidays from Harry.

Environmental Study

Students from the Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Institute are collaborating with their peers across Long Island on an ongoing study that could help to reduce the long-term environmental and biological impacts of pollution. The joint project has teen scientists studying heavy metals in the local environment, to determine their effect on living organisms such as plants, oysters and insects. The Doshi STEM students met recently with students from Southampton and Shelter Island high schools to organize, analyze

and compare data. The Nassau BOCES scientists combined their findings from Caumsett State Historic Park and a local superfund site (a federally sanctioned pollution cleanup site) with those of their Suffolk County peers, who conducted testing in Peconic Bay and the Shinnecock Canal. With the help of Brookhaven National Laboratory environmental scientist Dr. Keith Jones, students further analyzed their findings with the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), an accelerator facility

at Brookhaven Lab that produced beams of x-rays and other wavelengths of light used by researchers to study materials and biological structures. Getting access to a cutting-edge facility like NSLS, where scientists compete for experimental time, is a rare scientific opportunity for these high school scientists. The NSLS ceased operations in September 2014 in advance of the opening of the new NSLS-II at Brookhaven. “It’s really interesting discovering the pollutants in our environment and figuring out how they affect us,” said Hicksville

High School ninth grader Meghna Girdhar, who is in her first year at Doshi STEM. “Once you know what’s there, you can determine where it’s coming from. It’s a thinking process, and I love to elaborate on all the details. There’s a lot we can do with the information we’ve collected.” Later this year, students will present the results of their research to an audience of parents, principals and district superintendents. Once the project is complete, the institute and its partners will look at the possibility of having the

findings published. “This project gives our students a glimpse into real science,” said Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Instructor Jennifer Galasso. “The scientific community is large, and communication is essential. Our ultimate goal is to expose these students to STEM careers and give them a realistic experience in the research side of science.” “I enjoy working with these students,” said Dr. Jones, an environmental scientist who worked with the students at an x-ray beamline at NSLS. “We have a bunch of really smart kids and smart

teachers on Long Island, and I’m really impressed by them all. I see this program as something cooperative, where I gain a lot of insight from the students and their teachers. It’s a real scientific collaboration.” While the main goal is education, Ms. Galasso believes that there is an even wider benefit to this project. “Working collaboratively gives us a bigger picture of Long Islanders’ impact on their environment,” she said. “We’re answering important questions, such as, ‘How is this affecting us, both now an in the long run?’”
