Nassau County Executive Laura Curran recently announced that the children of Nassau County will once again be able to send their holiday lists directly to Old St. Nick at the North Pole via a special network of Santa’s Mailboxes at Nassau County Parks to December 18, 2020. “Happy to be able to provide a sense of normalcy and some holiday cheer for Nassau’s little ones who may have struggled to adapt to the many changes and challenges of this past year,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “Continuing to enhance our parks and expand their fun and unique seasonal programs is key to making Nassau a better place for people to live, work and play. Encouraging families to take advantage of this safe and magical annual activity.”

H.B. Mattlin Middle School in the PlainviewOld Bethpage Central School District will host its first ever virtual food drive. Mattlin students are creating hunger awareness posters, flyers, and videos promoting the drive. This community service activity will run until December 23, 2020. The food drive is in partnership with The Rudman Family Food Pantry, an organization the District has worked with in past years for the semi-annual 7th grade trips to the food pantry. “I’m thrilled that we

Christmas Tree Project Faces Explosive Need In 10th Year

The Christmas Tree Project began eight years ago in Colorado Springs, and its initial success has attracted national interest from people in other cities wanting to donate, get trees as well as wishing to emulate its success. The project is a local grassroots effort to provide free, fullydecorated Christmas trees to families in need. Last year, requests for trees almost sextupled to 17,500 from 2,780 the previous year, arriving nationally from 47 U.S. states and as far away as from Karachi, Pakistan. “A beautiful, sparkling Christmas tree can make all the difference in the world to a family going through hard times right now,” according to Michelle and David Fein, who started the project in 2010. “This turned out to be such a happy accident

for us, that it’s a thrill to be doing it again.” “In this season of giving,” CBS news correspondent Alex Wagner explained last year, “One Colorado couple never expected that donating their old Christmas tree would lead to a heartwarming annual tradition.” Watch. The entire project sprang quite serendipitously from a simple one-line Craigslist ad the Feins posted to give away their artificial Christmas tree in 2010. They were contacted by 20 people in less than a few hours telling them their stories and vying for that one tree, that Michelle and David decided they had to try to meet the demand. They told their friends, and soon the word spread. The story touched a nerve in the Colorado

Springs community, and hundreds of people contacted The Christmas Tree Project to donate and request trees, as well as volunteer to help. By the time the first season it was all over, more than 300 trees had been given away. In a world troubled economically and divided politically, it may even seem a bit surprising. “It’s been overwhelming to see the vast reservoirs of energy and generosity that exist today when you simply offer people a chance to become involved and contribute, even in a small way,” added the Feins. “And it’s incredibly humbling to see the gratitude small acts of kindness produce.” The 2010 ad David and Michelle Fein placed on Craigslist for a single tree, brought responses including:

Plainview Water District Once Again Supports Toys for Tots The Plainview Water District is once again teaming up with the Toys for Tots Foundation to help spread the holiday spirit throughout the Plainview-Old Bethpage community. As it has done in years past, the Plainview Water District will serve as an official drop-off location for the Foundation, which is sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. “People have been through a lot this year and now, probably more than ever, some of our neighbors could use a lift in spirits,” said Plainview Water District Chairman Marc B. Laykind.

“This time of year is all about spreading kindness and a small gift can go a long way for a child who could otherwise feel left out this holiday season. If you are in a position to support this program, we strongly encourage your participation and help us bring a much-deserved smile to someone less fortunate.” New and unwrapped gifts can be dropped off at the Plainview Water District’s main office, located at 10 Manetto Hill Road in Plainview by Tuesday, December 15, 2020. Over the past couple of years, the District has been able to collect hundreds of

donated toys on behalf of the community for this good cause. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve ‘Toys for Tots’ Foundation is a nonprofit organization that aims to provide all children across the United States with happiness and joy throughout the holiday season. Through the gift of a new toy, disadvantaged children will not be overlooked during the holidays, and will know that a community of people cares for them. Winter Yoga Classes at Hicksville Athletic Center Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson recently announced that residents seeking a low-impact and enjoyable fitness activity are encouraged take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Yoga Classes, which will be held in January and February. Classes are coed and open to individuals 18 years of age or older. “The Town is proud to offer residents a variety of programs and services including these yoga classes which offer benefits to the mind, body and soul,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Yoga builds strength, increases general flexibility and is considered a great stress reliever. All Kids Fair Was Virtual – And Is Now Available For Free The 10th annual All Kids Fair, which was postponed from its usual month of April to November 8, was virtual! This expo could not take place in its usual month due to COVID-19, but those who attended had a terrific time. This year’s All Kids Fair had a great lineup of virtual classes for the kids of all ages with some for the adults, too. Some of the many kids’ classes were: Disney Singalong, Soccer, two Floral Arranging classes, and Family Yoga. For the adults, there were classes on Essential Oils, Fidelis Care Information, and Pampering Pitstop. The platform that the event took place on will store the information for

the next 27 days, so all are welcome to visit the platform and learn about the 35 exhibitors and their offerings and enjoy over half of the classes, available on the site until December 8. Since families always enjoy our in-person petting zoo, this year there were virtual “live animal visits,” where farm animals such as sheep, goats and a mini-donkey were the stars. In addition to being educational, the “visits” were highly entertaining. Another new addition to this year’s event were “coffee talks,” opportunities for parents to interact with others at the same stage of life, such as those with a child who is an infant, toddler,

elementary age, middle school age, high school age, special needs, or gifted. All Kids Fair Director Barbara Kaplan said the time was right to pivot to an All Kids Fair virtual expo. “It was definitely not “just a Zoom event.’ It was a full-fledged virtual expo. We incorporated many of the activities of our live events plus some new opportunities such as our “virtual live animal visits” and “coffee talks.” Families had a great time learning at our many classes about services and products available to them.” Repeat attendee David Rosenthal of Oceanside raved about the event. “My girls had a blast! The younger one loved

looking at the animals [in the virtual petting zoo], and my older one liked Captain America and the ballet class. They asked if there will be another All Kids Fair next month!” There were several non-Long Island based businesses this year who enjoyed the opportunity to make their services available to Long Islanders virtually. Magician Dennis Kyriakos of California hosted a fun performance. Annaline Dinkelmann of Teach Me Wall Street, a New York City-based business, was a newcomer this year. She shared that “the All Kids Fair made it easy for the parents because we have the Christmas holidays coming up. Families were

able to learn about things to do; it opened their eyes. I was very pleased with the event.” The All Kids Fair, as always, had many diverse exhibitors including party entertainment, tutoring, activities, health/wellness products and services, non-profits, travel, and even a Girl Scout troop.
