n honor of Veterans Day, third-graders at Robbins Lane Elementary School created thankyou cards for the brave men and women who have served. Robbins Lane music teacher Dr. Catherine DaSilva personally handed out 75 cards to veterans in attendance at the Veterans Day Parade in New York City on November 11th. My Buddy Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior. Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. Through nearly two years of my life, from holiday gatherings to cozy weekends spent at home, just the two of us, Buddy was a constant. I’m not sure at what point I began to view him as so much more than a pet; but that he was. They say all animals have distinct personalities and characteristics, and Buddy was certainly no exception. Day after day, our routine became such that I swore he recognized me, greeted me, anxiously awaited my arrival home from work. Meal times were met with exuberant fin-waving and ﬂitting to and fro, and the

occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl. Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention! It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have. Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week. He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns. In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print. Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy. Forever my little ﬁnned friend… Love, your Human

Adam Canarick, co-president of Syosset High School’s Interact Club, was the youngest panelist and only high school student to present to more than 700 young adults at the U.N. headquarters in New York City. Adam presented on the U.N.’s “Sustainable Developmental Goal 3: Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being. Adam passionately addressed the need for pediatric cardiac care for hundreds of thousands of babies born worldwide each year with congenital heart disorders, the most common birth defect. He inspired the audience with his description of Syosset’s long-term commitment to helping

In honor of Veterans Day, Lane Elementary School you cards for the brave third-graders at Robbins in Syosset created thank- men and women who have served our country. Robbins Lane music teacher Dr. Catherine DaSilva personally handed out 75 cards to veterans in attendance at the Veterans Day Parade in New York City on November 11th. Dr. DaSilva said the recipients were touched by the students’ kind words and illustrations. She even printed photos of veterans receiving their cards to share with the thirdgraders. “Many [of the veterans] were moved to tears and gave a hearty thank-you for being thought of in such a lovely way,” she said. Additional cards from Robbins Lane were sent to the Syosset VFW Hall.

Syosset High School’s Students Against Violence Everywhere club recently held its annual “Peace, Love and Pizza Day,” an event designed to create a friendly, inclusive environment that discourages bullying behavior during lunch periods. as students jumped out of their comfort zones to make new friends. Each participant was asked to ‘hunt’ for other students outside of their typical circle of friends based on varying distinguishing characteristics (for example, seek out someone they didn’t know who has braces, or someone wearing purple or orange or donning a peace sign). Groups of eight that connected were deemed winners and broke bread over a large round pizza pie. “Peace, Love and Pizza Day” is held in conjunction

with national “Mix it Up at Lunch Day” in which students across the country are encouraged to make a concerted effort to interact with new people. Thanks to funding from the Student Council, the SAVE club provided 10 large cheese pizzas to qualifying scavenger hunt winners in each lunch period. Ed Camping Many school districts utilize Election Day as required professional development time for instructional staff. This year, the Syosset and Jericho school districts teamed to conduct a day of EdCamp, a participantdriven experience that places the teachers in charge of their own learning. Syosset and Jericho teachers submitted ideas for workshops, a master schedule was created and workshops were offered in both districts. Some Syosset educators set up camp at Jericho, while others led or participated in sessions held at Syosset. A large board was set up in each school’s cafeteria,

where workshops were posted and continually updated throughout the day. As teachers identified similarities in areas of their workshops, they combined sessions to bring more people together to share ideas. A QR code was also available for teachers to scan the schedule using their mobile devices and have it with them throughout the day. “We are always looking to break new ground,” said Syosset Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers. “EdCamp is an emerging, organic concept that enables teachers to share their greatest interests, skills and strengths with their colleagues in a manner and

setting that resonates with them. Our partnership with the Jericho School District has brought many creative minds together for the benefit of teachers and students in both communities. I thank Jericho Superintendent of Schools Henry Grishman and his staff for working with us to coordinate this very productive day.” Some workshops included “Improving Fine Motor Skills Through American Sign Language,” “Mindfulness in the Classroom,” “Share-athon of the New York State Science Learning Standards” and “Telling Your Story Using Social Media.”

He has brought muchneeded attention to the necessity for programs and care for individuals with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers who give so much every day,” said Tori Cohen, Executive Director Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation. “When I started this journey, I wanted to help my own family,” Asparro said. “If I was able to help one family it was worth it. I ran for at least 90 families; every mile I ran I ran on behalf of a different family. My grandmother taught me about faith, family and love. During this run, I ran for my family, families that have struggled through this disease, as well as for families who are currently suffering with Alzheimer’s. If we were to line all these families up in a row and someone were to ask ‘point to the family that Jay is running for,’ they would point to their own family.”

String Success and More Music students at Hicksville High School have been recognized in a variety of ways for their remarkable talents and achievements. Five orchestra students were selected by a committee of orchestra teachers for the Long Island String Festival Association based on their NYSSMA solo scores from spring 2016. Sophomore string student Michal Lewkowicz earned a $500 scholarship toward private study; he is one of just four students across Nassau County to be awarded this scholarship. Plainview resident Jay Asparro recently completed his 90-mile Ann Asparro Run to honor his grandmother and generate awareness in support of the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation (LIAF), a leading organization committed to offering services and support for those facing Alzheimer’s disease as well as their caregivers. Services include support groups, in-home respite and a social adult day program that runs five days a week for early, moderate and late stages of Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias. Jay was cheered on by dozens of his friends and family, as well as staff and board members of the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation as he crossed the finish line in front of St. Pius X R.C. Church in Plainview, marking the end of the three-day 90-mile run. Jay’s love and gratitude for his grandmother, Ann Asparro, who is living with Alzheimer’s, is the driving force behind his decision to take on this special three-day challenge. “It was a long, hard road since January when I
