Carl Bonuso, Ed.D., superintendent of the Hicksville Union Free School District, will be honored with the George M. Estabrook Distinguished Service Award on Saturday, December 2nd. The award is named after George Mitchell Estabrook, who was associated with Hofstra University in its early years and was responsible for developing Garden City into what it is today. Mr. Estabrook formed the Estabrook Construction Company and was responsible for the construction of many buildings on Hofstra’s campus as well as

throughout Long Island. Hofstra University’s Alumni Association has selected Dr. Bonuso, along with six other alumni, to be honored with this award at its 57th annual George M. Estabrook Distinguished Service Award Dinner. The award is given annually to those who exhibit outstanding service to the Hofstra community or who have distinguished themselves in their chosen field. Those receiving the award have shown service through research, teaching, promoting policies or helping the community. Retired from the

Wantagh School District, Dr. Bonuso is a well-known and highly regarded Long Island educator. He served as the interim superintendent of schools in Hicksville during the 2014-2015 school year and was appointed as superintendent in summer 2015. During his tenure in Hicksville, Dr. Bonuso has led the instructional and operational transformation of the district, including new initiatives and exciting innovations such as a district prekindergarten program, new middle school advisory and instructional programs, and a host of new high school electives and vocational education opportunities. Most recently, Dr. Bonuso was selected by the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce as the Education Provider of the Year for 2015, and in 2016 was honored by the Hicksville Civic Association with its Community Service Award. Dr. Bonuso has written numerous educational articles and has served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Artillery, where his distinguished career earned him both the Army Commendation Medal and the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross. Selected to Perform Of those most elite high school musicians, 608 were considered to be the “best of the best” and were selected for the NAfME festival by audition. AllNational Honor Ensembles consist of a concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed choir and jazz ensemble. Selected students will be rehearsing a challenging repertoire in preparation for performing under some of the most prominent conductors in the United States. Grace and Eric will perform under the direction of Dr. Z. Randall Stroope, while Hannah will follow the lead of Dr. Margery Deutsch. Dr. Stroope is the professor of music and director of choral/vocal studies at Oklahoma State University, while Dr. Deutsch served for nearly 30 years as

director of orchestras and professor of conducting at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “This is the highest recognition that a studentmusician can receive for participating in a school music program,” said Syosset Coordinator of Fine and Performing Arts, K-12 Michael Salzman. “Having three students from one high school invited to perform on this national stage is a great honor. Congratulations to Grace, Eric and Hannah, all of the music teachers they have had through the years, the parents who continue to support their pursuit of music education, and our Board of Education, administration and community for their ongoing commitment to the performing arts.”

For more than 10 years, the students of Village Elementary School in Syosset have been donating their leftover, unopened Halloween candy to numerous charitable organizations to benefit children who are less fortunate. Student council members helped to organize this year’s Operation Sweet Tooth event in the school gymnasium, sorting candy for distribution to local agencies that support children who are unable to enjoy the activities of Halloween

due to life circumstance or illness. Ten barrels were filled with the candy provided by the very generous Village children and their families, and they have since been distributed to organizations such as AHRC, Angela’s House and Mercy First. For the second consecutive year, primary grade students joined in the effort, working together to help sort candy with their upper-grade book buddies. Village students who were unable to participate in the sort, due to their

own allergies or choice, made beautiful cards to accompany the treasure trove of candy. As part of Operation Sweet Tooth, students participate in mathematical sorting, counting, grouping and graphing activities and estimate the amounts of candy collected. Special thanks to Eileen Hoffman and Wendy Tepper for organizing the activity and the Village School PTA’s Community Outreach committee for helping to distribute the candy.

Three Syosset High School student-musicians will perform at the 2017 National Association for Music Education AllNational Honor Ensembles concerts at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida from November 28th-29th. Grace Mittleman and Eric Schess have been invited to perform with the NAfME All-National Honors Choir, while Hannah Son was selected to play the flute in the All-National Honors Symphony Orchestra. During the 2016-2017 school year, talented music students across the United States and overseas in military-base schools practiced diligently to gain a chair or part in their local, district and state music honor ensembles.

I used to love decorating for the holidays. Each year, I couldn’t wait for the lights to go up in my neighborhood, the house to smell like pine needles and all the cherished knick knacks to find their way to the shelves. That was, until I began accumulating more decorations than my own little apartment could handle. To say my closets resemble something out of an episode of Hoarders would be overly dramatic; however, the fact that my coat closet no longer accommodates clothing of any kind, but rather, a fairly hefty collection of boxes piled nearly to the ceiling, tends to give me pause. In order to sort through what belongs to Christmas, specifically, it is now necessary to remove nearly all of these containers, briefly peek inside, and then continue to dig. To be fair, these are not all my decorations. Not quite. Once my grandfather passed away and we began the painstaking process

of cleaning out the house my grandparents had called home for nearly 60 years, I acquired several boxes of cherished holiday possessions to add to my already-growing collection. Don’t get me wrong: to the outside observer, it probably doesn’t look like much. And, for the remainder of the year, the vast majority of lights and garlands and greens are out of sight. Only I know what lurks behind those closet doors. (And now, you, dear readers.) It is only once the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers has been packed away in the fridge and the sounds of Christmas carols have invaded the airwaves that my mind turns to the menagerie that lies within. Usually, it is a two-week ordeal; one for the random figurines and wreaths, accents and novelties - and the other, for the tree, my skinny, sixfoot tall “apartment tree” that comes neatly folded in a box, possibly the most compact of

all my original purchases. Last year, I kept the decorations fairly low-key, favoring instead only the most special of my grandparents’ holiday mementos, a few white lights and my very own Charlie Brown tree. This year… well, let’s just say the process may need to be expanded to three weeks. The way I see it, as long as all is completed by a week or so before Christmas Eve, there is plenty of time left to enjoy. I’ve never been part of the crowd that feels the need to put up the nativity as the last of the trick-or-treaters is leaving; nor do I rush to pack it all away before the final present has been unwrapped on Christmas morning. To each his or her own. However you choose to celebrate, whatever the extent of your decorations… as long as you enjoy them, even if no one else has occasion to see them, that is all that matters. Happy decorating.

Kindergartners at Dutch Lane Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District planted the “seeds of success” during the annual kinder-garden planting ceremony. As part of the tradition, the students performed

a song for their parents and planted tulip bulbs in the garden alongside the school, signifying the planting of the tiny seeds of citizenship, respect, responsibility, curiosity and knowledge. The ritual will continue in the spring,

Students enrolled in Chrysoula Highland’s Photo 2 and Photo 3 classes at Syosset High School have collaborated on a special collection of photos that show the school’s diversity of race, religion and personality. Faces of Syosset, a mural currently comprised of 150 photos of students and staff taken throughout the school, is now prominently on display in the main lobby area. The photos were taken by photography students in these classes, inspired by the Humans of New York photo blog and book that features street portraits and interviews collected on the streets of New York City by creator Brandon Stanton.

“The whole idea was to show how much unity there is in our school,” said Highland, who originally proposed the project as an extra credit assignment. “I wanted my students to stop…look around and look at the people who are in our building every day.” Highland’s students took to the idea right away and have been making connections to others they didn’t know before. “It’s really been bringing people together!” she added. The project has created a buzz among students. Many are taking notice of their photos and striking up conversations with classmates. New friends have been made, social networks have grown and

Faces of Syosset the photographers have an additional platform to share their creativity. Candids, fun poses and causal headshots provide a variety of insights into the students and staff of Syosset High School. More photos are being added and a few light questions and answers are also accompanying some of the newer photo additions to provide even greater insight into the students on display. There are also plans to invite Stanton to the school to see the mural and hopefully speak with students about his own inspiration that helped to launch this wonderful display of diversity and unity in Syosset.

Student council members from South Woods Middle School in Syosset recently welcomed FDNY firefighters Christopher Berke and Giovanni Martinez, who stopped by the school to pick up hurricane relief supplies collected by the students during a recent drive. The supplies are being donated to the New York City Mayor’s Fund in

support of those affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria in Houston, Florida, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico, respectively. Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders at South Woods were each given an assignment by the school’s student council during the supply drive. Sixth-graders were asked to bring in baby supplies, while seventhand eighth-graders

Once again, South Woods students and staff rose to the occasion and remained true to the school’s ongoing pledge to help others in need through its South Woods CARES initiative of showing compassion, awareness, respect, empathy and service.

Badminton Battle Students and staff of John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage School District took to the badminton court on November 3rd to raise more than $500 for the Special Olympics. From October 26th through November 1st, students could purchase

raffle tickets during their lunch periods to join the badminton tournament. At the end of the purchasing period, those with winning ticket numbers could ask a JFK teacher or faculty member to be on their team. On the day of the tournament, a total of

23 participants, dressed in matching uniforms, enjoyed an afternoon of friendly competition, exercise and community involvement. The district extends its gratitude to physical education teacher Alyssa Kildare for organizing the tournament.

As the weather becomes colder, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation are reminding New Yorkers to register their snowmobiles. S n o w m o b i l e registrations must be renewed annually. You can do so online on the DMV website, by mail or in person at a DMV office. Last year, 106,867 snowmobiles were registered in New York. “Snowmobiling is one of the many ways residents and visitors can enjoy winter in New York,” said Terri Egan, DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner. “Before the snow starts to fall, make sure your snowmobile is registered so you’re good to go as soon as the weather allows.

You and your passengers should also wear a helmet so you can ride safely.” Members of a New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA) Snowmobile Club can receive a voucher that includes an ID number which can be used to reduce your registration fee. If you are registering your snowmobile for the first time, here is what you need to bring to a DMV office: a completed Snowmobile Registration Application (MV-82SN) proof of identity and age. See DMV form ID-82 Proofs of Identification. You must be at least 16 years old to register a snowmobile in New York. proof of ownership and bill of sale: non-residents can use photocopies of proof of ownership and aren’t required to pay the NYS sales tax if the

snowmobile is registered in another state proof of identity and age cash, check or credit card for the $100 registration fee and sales tax, or proof of sales tax payment or exemption. If you have a current, valid NYSSA voucher, and bring the voucher to the office, the fee for your registration is $45.00. Apart from the first $5 collected, the registration fees are used to support snowmobiling in New York State. There are more than 10,400 miles in the Statewide Snowmobile Trail System traversing 45 counties, maintained by over 200 clubs, and funded through 51 municipal sponsors. “New York State is an exceptional destination for snowmobiling, and the best way to enjoy this winter activity is to ride safely,” said State Parks Commissioner Rose

Harvey. “As snowmobilers get prepared for the upcoming season, we remind them to exercise caution and follow safe riding practices when the time comes to head out on the trails.” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said, “Snowmobiling is an exciting way for adventurers of all abilities to enjoy the great outdoors and have some winter fun. I also want to remind New Yorkers to register their snowmobiles, which supports new trail construction and our ongoing maintenance of more than 1,800 miles of snowmobile trails on state land, and be sure to follow appropriate safety precautions while enjoying the great outdoors this winter.” For non-New Yorkers looking to use their snowmobiles in New York State, you can register

if your snowmobile is already registered in your home state. Use the NYS Registration for Out-ofState Snowmobile service to get a temporary (15 day) NYS registration and operate your snowmobile here immediately. We will send you your permanent registration in the mail. Snowmobilers must carry registration and proof of insurance documents on their person at all times while snowmobiling. Riders must produce the documents at the request of any law enforcement officer or magistrate. Additionally, riders must produce insurance documentation at the request of anyone who is injured or suffers property damage as a result of operation of a snowmobile. Holders of snowmobile safety certificates must carry the certificate when they are snowmobiling. DMV also reminds

snowmobilers that it is illegal to operate one while impaired by drugs or alcohol, and drivers and passengers must wear helmets on the state snowmobile trail system. New York State is a leader in snowmobile education and offers operator training courses for snowmobilers of all ages beginning at age 10.
