November’s Charity of the Month is:
The Book Fairies, located in Freeport, NY, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts donations of new and gently used books and connects them with organizations throughout all five boroughs and Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Some of those organizations are hospitals, schools, veteran organizations and soup kitchens. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers. The Book Fairies does more than just impact their local community; they are also dedicated to supporting literacy programs in underdeveloped nations around the world. Some of the books they receive that are in fair to average condition are packaged for partnering organizations to be shipped overseas! Since the program’s inception, they have helped build libraries in Africa, India, China, South America and the Caribbean Islands!
If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations and financial donations are always welcome and The Book Fairies is in need of corporate sponsors. The Secret In Making Great Decisions before dawn and head east towards Montauk Point (very close to where Gurney’s Inn is located, and where you can find a lot of free parking spots). I time it so that I arrive there right around sunrise. Since I already have my running gear under my clothes, it only takes a few moments to get ready. Leaving the car, I walk towards the water’s edge to where the hard sand is. At that point, I begin a slow run along the shore for about a mile. I pick out a small sand dune and rest for a while. While resting, I always pay special attention to the way the waves break offshore and then roll up onto the shore. I find it very soothing to watch. The key point is that while I am resting, I think about the following three factors (which come from the core of strategic planning): 1) Where am I today? In my career, my marriage, my home life, my finances, my relationship with my kids, my outlook on life, etc. 2) Where do I want to be one year from today? What do I hope to accomplish in the next twelve months?
3) What do I need to get there? What are the tools I need to reach my yearly objectives, and how will I go about utilizing them? Special note: While these three questions appear to be relatively simple, rest assured they are not! To answer each of them, be completely honest with yourself. Make sure that all those are achievable, even though some require a bit of a “stretch” on your part. I assure that by using this method it will be a definite help in reaching your yearly goals. Best of all, you don’t have to travel to Montauk Point to do this. Just find a quiet corner anywhere, where you will not be disturbed for at least forty-five to sixty minutes and you can do this. It will take a bit of patience for the first time, but rest assured, it will prove time well spent. Best of luck on your journey and remember, Rome wasn’t built in one day. Use liberal quantities of patience and you will be just fine. Have a great day. Peace.

Hicksville Seniors Enjoy Dinner and a Show The Hicksville community’s senior citizens were recently honored with an afternoon filled with food, fun and entertainment during the Hicksville Public School District’s 27th annual Fall Senior Citizen Luncheon held at Hicksville High School. Members of the school’s National Honor Society volunteered to serve the hors d’oeuvres during
cocktail hour and a threecourse meal of salad, an entrée of choice and dessert for the main event. The guests of honor were treated to special performances by the school’s marching band (which took third place in the recent NYS Marching Band competition), chamber singers and theater department. Vocalist Sierra Hall even delivered a stunning rendition of Marvin
Hamlisch’s “What I Did For Love.” The school gymnasium was decorated beautifully as a grand ballroom for the luncheon and also featured artwork and table centerpieces created by students. The event is a fun intergenerational tradition that brings students and their elders together for an afternoon of feasting, fine arts and good conversation.

How to Make Use of a Jacket “Don’t seek, don’t search, don’t ask, don’t knock, don’t demand... relax. If you relax, it comes. If you relax, it is there. If you relax, you start vibrating with it.” - Osho Much of our suffering comes from our unwillingness to relinquish control. Everything from large sweeping intersections in our lives to the smallest details that plague us daily when they don’t go our way; we often operate under the faulty belief that we can use force, manipulation, or anger to bend the universe to our will. Coming up to New York after living in Florida, my nine year old son grew accustomed to living his life in t-shirts and shorts, unencumbered by the heavy winter gear that New Yorkers wear. As the weather has grown colder, he has been resistant to wearing his jacket, hat and gloves; instead insisting on layering t-shirts and sweatshirts. For weeks now, our morning routine has included me begging, pleading, warning him about getting sick, threatening to take away various priviliges, and at
times, shouting in exasperation. “JUST PUT YOUR JACKET ON!” In reality, the thought of him getting sick, or even what the bus driver or teacher would think of me were my motivating factors for my panic. It was my own discomfort about the situation. What I’ve realized is, ultimately, I don’t have control. My job as his parent is to empower him with love, values, ideas, compassion, and the information he needs to make the right decisions for himself. All I can do is sit back and allow him to experience the world. This morning, as we were waiting together for the school bus to arrive, I observed that my son’s hat and gloves were inside his backpack; his winter jacket slung over his arm. None of these items were actually on his body. I said, “Uh... you know, carrying a hat and gloves, and holding your winter jacket won’t keep you warm. They only work if you wear them.” He replied, “I know that.” I nodded my head in mutual understanding and said, “Okay, good. I just want to be sure that
you’re aware of how the whole process works.” He stared at me and let out a sheepish giggle. Slowly, he reached inside his backpack for his hat and placed the hat on his head for warmth. Then, as if to say, “I’m not doing this because you want me to. It’s my decision,” he slung his arms through his jacket. As a singular stance of independence, he skipped the gloves. I was okay with that. The allowing and the space of freedom it created caused my son to put on his hat and jacket. It was more effective than the begging, the pleading, the vague threats of catching a cold. In life, the more we try to control others or our circumstances and surroundings, the more our desired outcome eludes us. Be in a state of allowing. Just as you would allow the water from a babbling brook to seamlessly run through your fingers rather than trying to clench and trap the water in your hands, allow things to simply be as they are, and watch as your suffering diminishes.

The Bethpage High School Masquers’ Guild put on several riveting performances of “Clue: On Stage” at the Bethpage Center for Performing Arts from November 15th through the 17th. Audiences comprised of administrators, students and community members attended and applauded the first show of the year. Directed by Ms. Ilana Strongin, the guild debuted the play during a dress rehearsal for JFK Middle School students and select community members on November 14th. Official opening night for the public was held on November 15th, and was followed by two more performances over the next two days. The play is based on the cult classic film and

Essential Functions: • Respond to requests for technical assistance by telephone and other channels. • Provide technical expertise to security professionals in the areas of installation, troubleshooting, upgrade and optimization of security hardware and software products. • Determine the best solution for each inquiry, issue or request by applying and / or adapting existing knowledge and best practices. • Utilize existing support tools, techniques and methodology. • Participate in the capture of new knowledge and solutions. • Document and track each customer interaction from initial contact through closure. Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video. • Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable. • Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.) • Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills. • Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written). • ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively. • Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts). • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required.
