The Town of Oyster Bay 2013-2014 Distinguished Artists Concert series continues in December with a multitude of performances at various libraries throughout the Town, Councilman Joe Muscarella announced. “This program which is one of the Town’s most popular, runs through May 2014 and features performances by a diverse collection of musical acts and dance programs,” Councilman Muscarella stated. “These concerts, all free of charge, help illustrate how truly diverse the interests of our residents here in the Town are, and these concerts provide them with the finest cultural and performing arts entertainment in the comfort and convenience of their local library.” Councilman Muscarella noted that for the month of December,

four performances are scheduled: On Sunday, December 1st, at 3 p.m. at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, located at 999 Old Country Road in Plainview, residents are invited to a performance by Blue Spruce Cloggers, featuring a program of clog, tap and Irish step dance to blue grass, oldtime, country and pop music. On Sunday, December 8th, at 2 p.m., the Home Grown String Band will delight families with acoustic country music and Appalachian flatfoot dancing at the Bethpage Public Library, located at 47 Powell Avenue in Bethpage. On Sunday, December 15th, at 2 p.m., Beatles fans will get to spend an evening reliving the music and stories that defined a generation with the performance of ‘In My Life:

The John Lennon Tribute,’ which will take place at the Hicksville Public Library, located at 169 Jerusalem Avenue in Hicksville. On Sunday, December 22nd, at 2 p.m., the Cold Spring Harbor Band present ‘A Tribute to the Music of Billy Joel,’ which will feature a musical journey through the songs of Billy Joel’s first album, accompanied by a photo slide show. This performance will take place at the Farmingdale Public Library, located at 116 Merritts Road in Farmingdale. C o u n c i l m a n Muscarella noted that the “Distinguished Artists” concert series is sponsored by the Cultural and Performing Arts (CAPA) Division of the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services. Tis’ The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tis’ the season for outdoing ourselves – in every way… for feasting for what seems like days on end, for running up the credit cards on gifts for all our friends and loved ones – and occasionally ourselves – for “decking the halls” with extravagant garlands and twinkling lights and precious ornaments… There are many who detest this time of year, for precisely these reasons. But I love it.

Tis’ the season to be jolly, right? And why not … we spend enough of our days consumed by outside issues beyond our control. We deserve this brief reprieve from the madness, don’t we? No time like the present to savor the moment and enjoy all of life’s blessings. And, for me, this holiday season will be a year of firsts: First Christmas in my new apartment. First opportunity to decorate and put up my very own tree. First chance to perhaps host a gathering

of my own and – dare I even say it – cook?!? Perhaps not. We wouldn’t want to be too ambitious! But still, the season will be exciting. It is a time for establishing new traditions and carrying on old ones. For reconnecting with those we have lost touch with over the last year. For spending quality time with those who mean the most. It is time, time we cannot get enough of. However you choose to spend it, may you enjoy it wholeheartedly.

The Hicksville Public School District’s 22year tradition of hosting local senior citizens for a special fall luncheon continued this year with a reception held in the high school gym. The luncheon was an in-house event planned and executed by administrators, staff and student groups. “We are really excited to have you here so that you have an opportunity to not only see all the great things that our students do, but to also witness who they are,” said Superintendent of Schools Maureen Bright as

she thanked the attendees for their ongoing support. “We want to thank you for the contributions you have made to our community and for joining with us today.” Last fall the luncheon was cancelled due to Superstorm Sandy. Students in matching aprons happily served beverages, salads, main courses and desserts to nearly 200 attendees. The table centerpieces, made by art students, were offered as take-home prizes. As part of the entertainment, the

marching band, directed by Meredith Boonshaft, played four “James Bond” movie songs, including Monty Norman’s “James Bond Theme” and Paul and Linda McCartney’s “Live and Let Die.” The string ensemble, directed by Amy Noll, performed three songs, including a medley from Alan J. Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s “Camelot,” before leading a singalong of Leo Friedman and Beth Slater Whitson’s “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and the folksong “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.” The Madrigal Singers, directed by Michelle Emeric, sang three songs a cappella, including Lalo Schifrin’s “Mission Impossible Theme.” Guests were also treated to a sneak preview of the upcoming stage production of Neil Simon’s “Fools,” performed by the theater department and directed by Caitlin Cassidy.

Senioritis that comes with waiting for your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down. These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their car, many students feel that their struggle is over. These students have done it, they have completed their journey. Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip! Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average

drops a single letter grade, the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid. This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career. The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall. This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic. So what does this mean for your future high school senior? BLUE RIBBON RUN - The Integrated Medical Foundation’s Annual Blue Ribbon Run at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park was recently held to raise funds in the fight against prostate cancer and also to bring awareness about the pervasiveness of the disease and the importance of prostate cancer screening. Rinks To Open Get ready to go outside and take part in some winter fun. Town of Oyster Bay residents will soon be able to enjoy outdoor ice skating at the Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa) and Syosset-Woodbury Community Park ice rinks, when the 2013-2014 season officially begins the day after Thanksgiving on Friday, November 29th. “The outdoor ice skating season will run through Sunday, March 2nd, 2014, weather permitting,” Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson stated. “Town residents can, once again, enjoy this popular winter sport at prices that make it a great value for your recreation dollar.” General admission for Oyster Bay Town residents for two-hour public skating sessions at both rinks will be $2 for ages two to four, $4 for ages five through 17, $5 for ages 18 and older, $2 for senior citizens 60 and older and $3 for Town veterans, volunteer firefighters and auxiliary police with identification. For non-Town residents, the general admission will be $3 for ages two to four, $7 for ages five to 17, $8 for ages 18 and older, $4 for seniors and $3 for veterans, volunteer firefighters and auxiliary

police with identification. Both Oyster Bay Town resident and non-Town resident children under two will be admitted free. Special discount books consisting of 10 tickets will be available. A discount book for ages five to 17 years will be $30 for Oyster Bay Town residents and $55 for non-Town residents. A book for ages 18 and older will be $35 for Oyster Bay Town residents and $65 for non-Town residents. In addition, ice rinks may be rented by resident groups for $225 per hour. Nonresident groups can rent the rinks for $325 per hour. Charters will be available when public sessions are not scheduled. Requests for group charters can be scheduled by calling the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center at 516.433.7465, ext. 8231. Councilwoman Johnson noted that the skate shop will be open during all public sessions for renting skates at $4.00 per pair, per session. Discount books for skate rentals will be available for $35. You’ll see people of all ages and ability levels at the rinks.” So, if you’re looking for some great family entertainment that provides fun, outdoor exercise, break out of your hibernation and take a spin at the SyossetWoodbury or Marjorie R. Post Community Park ice rink and enjoy the quintessential winter experience of outdoor ice skating. Councilwoman Johnson added that for those who would prefer to do their ice skating indoors, the state-of-the-art Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park, is open year round. The Town of Oyster Bay will host two Saturday night prime time high school ice hockey contests this season as part of its High School Hockey Night in Oyster Bay series held at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center on Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto. Starting off the series will be the Massapequa Chiefs taking on the Syosset Braves on Saturday, December 14th at 8 p.m. The second contest, featuring the Cold Spring Harbor Seahawks and the Bethpage Golden Eagles, is scheduled for Saturday, February 1st, at 8 p.m. “These events, which are free to all Town residents,

feature high school teams that are among the finest in Nassau County,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The players really look forward to competing at the Town of Oyster Bay’s state of the art rink and we are always pleased to have them here.” Supervisor Venditto noted that Saturday night is a convenient time slot for people to attend the high school games. “Parents and friends of the players, as well as high school ice hockey fans, don’t always get to see these outstanding games because of other commitments during the week,” the Supervisor said. “That’s in large part, why High School Hockey Night in Oyster Bay is so special.”

Ice hockey on Long Island is continuing to grow in popularity, producing accomplished players who have gone on to compete at very high levels. The two Saturday night games will showcase some of the best talent in the area. “Here’s your opportunity to catch the rising stars,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The entire family will be able to enjoy the top tier action on the ice.” Steve Rupp, President of the Nassau County High

High School Hockey Nights by Island Harvest as part of ‘Hockey Fights Hunger.’ Supervisor Venditto said the Town of Oyster Bay is honored to host this top echelon level high school hockey contest at the Town’s indoor ice skating center, which is considered by many to be among the finest facilities of its kind in the Nation. “I expect many residents will appreciate seeing these outstanding high school teams compete,” Supervisor Venditto said. the high school game will also serve as a fine example for the Town’s young hockey players, who can one day aspire to further their education through athletics. “The game will feature terrific role models for our young hockey players and I encourage everyone to come out to support the competing teams,” said Supervisor Venditto. “It will be two great evenings of hockey and we’re pleased to have them right here in the Town of Oyster Bay.”

Author and professor at the Teacher’s College at Columbia University, Dr. James Borland III presented What Is Giftedness at the Manhasset Public Library. Invited by Manhasset SEPTA as part of the Gifted and Talented Programming for 2013-2014, Borland’s presentation was very well attended with administrators, teachers, AGATE of Port Washington, as well as many parents in the audience. “Dr. Borland did a wonderful job of walking us through the definitions of giftedness through the ages,” said Manhasset SEPTA Gifted and Talented Director Joanne Thalheimer. Thalheimer also noted that Borland discussed why

gifted programs are needed and what is available for children. In addition, the presentation reviewed the characteristics of gifted children at different ages. After the presentation, Manhasset parents brainstormed about what can be done outside the classroom to supplement the needs of gifted and talented children. Bananas For Teachers

Manhasset Special Education PTA (SEPTA) and Whole Foods Markets Manhasset thanked the district’s educators with a donation of snacks and tea on the staff training day this November. While students enjoyed the day off on November 5th, the Manhasset public school staffers including teachers and aides were hard at work learning to best teach the community’s children. “As the T in our PTA, the teachers are a vital part of our children’s lives and learning process,” Manhasset SEPTA Co President Diane Treacy states. “We are delighted to partner with Whole Foods

to give teachers a little tea break and energy snack to keep them going on staff training day.” Whole Foods Markets Manhasset donated over 250 bananas and boxes of breakfast tea bags to SEPTA for the staff. Manhasset SEPTA also provided free gifts and valuable information for the teachers and aides including expert presentation for teachers on special education and gifted/talented student needs. Manhasset SEPTA Co President Diane Treacy adds. Diagnosed with “atypical development and strong autistic tendencies” and “too sick” for outpatient treatment, Dr. Stephen Shore was recommended for institutionalization. Nonverbal until four years old, and with much support from his parents, teachers, wife, and others, Shore is now a professor at Adelphi University where his research focuses on matching best practice to the needs of people with autism.

In addition to working with children and talking about life on the autism spectrum, Dr. Shore presents and consults internationally on issues pertinent to education, relationships, employment, advocacy, and disclosure. His is author of several books including Beyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome, Ask and Tell: Self-advocacy and Disclosure for People on the Autism Spectrum, the critically acclaimed Understanding Autism for Dummies, as well as completing his newly released DVD Living along the Autism Spectrum: What it means to have Autism or Asperger Syndrome. In addition to speaking across the world and being a professor at Adelphi University, Dr. Shore is president emeritus of the Asperger’s Association of New England and a former board member of the Autism Society. Dr. Shore also serves in the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee, Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Association, and other autism related organizations. Presentation A Success The Autism: From The Inside Out presentation by Dr. Stephen Shore on October 7th was a huge success with teachers and parents alike. Attendees, which included school administrators, principals, teachers, school psychologists, guidance counselors, therapy providers, BOE members, neighboring SEPTA’s membership, and of course parents and grandparents, called it very informative, interesting and even amusing. After the presentation, many attendees lined up to chat with Dr. Shore and to purchase his books. As thanks to the Manhasset SEPTA, Dr. Shore donated his book Beyond the Wall to the Manhasset Library’s special needs parenting section. This section found on the third floor in the children’s library was created by Manhasset SEPTA as a resource for parents and educators. Dr. Shore is a world renowned speaker and author about Autistic Spectrum Disorders who provided his best practices for teaching and helping children on the spectrum. His research spans over 20 years while he brings a unique insight as a person diagnosed with autism at four years old. Dr. Shore’s story is one of triumph as he lives with autism yet has accomplished his PhD and is currently a professor at Adelphi University. “What an inspirational story, and what valuable information for parents and educators,” Manhasset
